For the record, he uploaded another video on his Youtube account today; it's the Star Trek video from a year ago. It's packed with the gimmicks we all loathe and a prime example why he should stick to matter-of-fact reviews. He's unusually good when he's ripping games apart on fundamental levels.

I do like the line, "You want Genesis? You can have Genesis!"

He's probably my favorite internet personality, which isn't saying much really. But hey, it's free entertainment, even if it is kinda gimicky sometimes. I can certainly appreciate his hit or miss style of creativity which is something I lack in every sesne of the word. So I certainly understand, true artist put out a lot of crap, but his good stuff definitley makes up for it. For every "poo poo" based character, there's a really good innovation, like with the Battletoads review.

Also, the whole Atari sex games chronology is a great way to make uninformed friends go, "what the gently caress?"

^^ I entirely agree, but that's not why I watch it. I can appreciate the creativity of some of the more elaborate reviews (Mario 3, Halloween, etc). This is coming from someone who never does dumb or silly things because I never try as I have no creativity of my own. That said, I'm willing to grant him some license to do weird things, because when he's successful, the payoff is much better than someone who plays it close to the chest.

Also, if you like AVGN, you should also like The Nostalgia Critic. His videos are more in depth and much more focused on the content rather than the character.

In recent years, I've been of the opinion that although, I certainly liked SNES more when I was young, NES has more appeal to me now. It just has more quality games. I could spew off about 2 dozen good NES games. Less than half that for SNES.

StickySweater

Perhaps I should have increased both of those numbers. I still maintain that the NES had better games on the whole though. Having a ridiculously large ROM collection definitely helps put things in perspective.

I'll continue to watch regardless, but I can definitely understand some people's apprehension with regards to the same old song and dance every video. I'm perfectly in favor of him taking it in strange new directions and let the character evolve. That said, I've seen people declare some of his new videos are going downhill, just to come back and say that a new episode is awesome (Battletoads comes to mind).

I just pulled a random screenshot I thought was funny looking. I actually think he was fairly reserved in this video. It was more, "what the hell is this?" rather than "Fuckballs! Diarrhea coming out my rear end is better than this!" Also, acting aside, he's generally comfortable in front of the camera and I think this is usually reliably good. If he were to spend more time getting all the mannerisms and facial expressions perfect, we wouldn't have a new video every 2 weeks. Personally, I'd rather have more content, then significantly less, slightly better content. I got an education in the 3D0 in a fairly amusing way, and I appreciate that. For someone who has time to kill, this is definitely something I'd recommend.

Honestly, as a kid, I never understood this level of anger. The only time I ever got upset was when I was cheated something outside of the game, like a game freeze or losing power after playing for 2 or 3 hours. I never got upset over not making a jump or dying against a tough boss and yes, I've played Ninja Turtles 1.

Actually, I'd put money on it being the R.O.B. accessory/toy. That was actually a particularly interesting video. According to his comments on the site (I haven't tried this) the video is purposly designed to match up with Dark Side of the Moon, which if you remember, is known for matching up with the Wizard of Oz.

I liked ET as a kid. It took me a week to figure out how to beat it. Most games didn't even have an ending, so that was a plus.

Games from that era had the charm of being made by one programmer’s singular vision. This as well as simple mechanics made for a bunch of pass / fail games. My favorite of the era was definitely Secret Quest which was released during the end of the Atari life cycle (when Nintendo was beginning to dominate). Secret Quest is basically a top down maze game (kinda like Zelda, but not nearly as complex) in which you set off the self destruct sequence of the reactor core and escape before time runs out. I like to think of it as a sort of proto-Descent.

Anyway, end derail.

Has anyone here actually played Back to the Future Parts II and III? My God, the game is so bad. Of course, back then I had a huge tolerance for bad games, but even then I knew it was exceptionally so. It took me about a year or so just to figure out how to beat it.

You have to collect items by doing minigames, which are in hidden areas. You need keys to access said areas. So you get the keys by killing enemies, you succeed in playing the minigame, you get the item, and then you need to place it in another secret location in the correct time period. But each item only has one area where it can be placed. To determine if that's the right place, you need to unscramble the words. So if you have a milkshake, you need to find a secret location that has the word scrambled in it. Each time you do this, you unlock a piece of the puzzle. Complete this series of ridiculous and unfun tasks 30 times and you beat the game... No not completely, just BttF 2. You've still got BttF 3 to go through. Did I mention there is no save or password feature?

Despite having put an easy 100 hours into this game over the course of my life, I have never gotten to Back to the Future III. The only way I even know it exist is from a screenshot posted on wikipedia.

Edit: While looking for a link for this post, I found there is a password system. For the first time ever, I'm going to get to play BttF part III. I'm excited!

Edit 2: Played it. Sucks. No surprise there. It does seem much shorter though. You could maybe beat this part if you were masochistic enough to try.

VVV Yeah, I had a game genie, but there's no code to send you ahead to the second part.

One of my favorite vidoes of his is the Rocky Jumped a Park Bench which was shown at the Philadelphia Film Festival. If you're a fan of the Rocky films or even just the first (and best) one, you should appreciate it.

His senior college work The Deader the Better is a pretty well produced zombie film and goes way beyond what we're used to seeing with AVGN. It's only a short, and I like to include it in my Halloween themed viewing material.

I get a lot out of the horror based videos. You could tell he took the subject manner seriously enough to do a justice to the characters and some of the clichés of their respective movies (ie. James going into the hall closet that has pipes and stuff everywhere in the Nightmare video). The idea that there's an eccentric crazy old guy who sells Atari games in his neighborhood for $100 a cart was great idea in general. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre episode was similarly well thought out (getting stuck on the wheelchair, etc).

Maybe the nerd's lost some of his magic now and maybe it's not all that great, especially the new stuff, but it's free and I enjoy the character. So I hope he keeps making new stuff.

By the way, according to his site there should be a new nerd video up tonight.

"Hey guys, lets make this movie that's like where Picard has to go up against himself, only evil. And Shinzon has this ship that can fire while cloaked and has like a gazillion torpedo bays and poo poo. Troy can totally have this awesome like telepathic thing going on. In the site faq he says:

AVGN posted:

How do you record your game footage?

I just use a DVD recorder. That’s it. The game is plugged into the DVD recorder, and I push record. It’s that simple. But then, how you get the DVD footage into your computer is up to you. There’s several ways, but I run the DVD recorder into a digital camera which converts the analog signal to digital and captures into Final Cut Pro using a firewire connection. This means having to record it again, in real time, usually when I’m away from the computer doing something else. Doing it this way, rather than some kind of DVD burning software, allows me to capture it in Final Cut’s native codec, without the hassle of rendering constantly and having various tech issues.

So yeah. He uses the real games. I don't think I've ever seen him explicitly say he used a ROM even once. That must be real tough since a lot of those games show the ending. I know he does cheat on some of them though by using in game codes, level selects, or even the Game Genie on occasion.

I really liked lazerdisc from an artistic point of view. If you talk to people who are big vinyl record enthusiast, you could probably coax them into discussing the value of the artwork, and how much more significant it is for them when assessing albums in general. You can sort of get a feel for this even just handling a vinyl record, if your like me and only have a few of them.

The size of the pictures just has such a huge impact in how I view bands and music. I never even realized it until this whole MP3 craze of the last 11 or 12 years.

Lazerdisc has the same sort of feel. If your more into content and don't get much enjoyment out of owning or collecting films or music, then you probably can't relate, but I think it's a shame that album/movie art is so much less significant now (album art more so).

As recently as 2006 (when I graduated from college for Journalism), some TV stations were still using (admitedly) outdated equipment and Beta tapes were still the main form of gathering and moving video. Wikipedia has some lenghty discussion about why this came to be, but I suspect at least part of the reason has to do with the fact that Betamax tapes had superior video and sound.

It has nothing on todays video technology of course (both in ease of use, preserved quality, copying etc.), and I'd venture to guess any studios still using it are doing so out of cost necessity, not because it's easier or better.

I also made one for a school project called "Escape from Africa" in which you traveled around the board collecting money. You had to get enough money to be able to get on the plane at the end of the game, while avoiding elephants, AIDS, Tsetse flies, and of course, the Devil himself.

I learned that essentially, the game did go through some basic testing with the testers making a bunch of suggestions, but they decided to just release "as is" instead.
