Ok, I called Microsoft back, and this time I pressed "7" (Questions about Windows 7) then "1" (Buy Windows 7 Now). Unlike when I pressed "1" at the start menu, I had 0 wait time, and I got the full edition of Professional for $38 shipped with both 64 and 32 bit disks.

So to people who are going to call Microsoft directly, press "7" on the start menu for both speedy service and a proper quote/a better deal.

Man, I used WinME for a few months and had no problems with it at all. Sometimes I think I'm the only one.

I once bought a Compaq during the ME era. Within 1 week, I was calling Compaq and bugging them for another solution. Fortunately, it was also shortly before the XP era. I spent 2 weeks on ME before I hooked myself up with some sweet FCKGW action (I bought it as soon as I could get it, btw).

win2000 was pretty rad I thought, then again I can recall reading an article that said it was suppose to do away with needing to reboot on driver installs, and here I am 10 years later, and I've yet to install anything that hasn't made me reboot. Not that its a huge issue, I just think it was a weird thing to boast about in a review.

Back on topic, I hope after I'm done moving house in a week I'll have money to grab this and replace the RC version. Been running the RC since it came out and have had 0 issues with it, so I'd say I'm definitely sold.

Sweet, were you able to get your digitalriver copy 100% canceled? The number to call in case anybody is wondering for the full copy from MS is 1-877-696-7786 .

Honestly just get a copy of Win 7 off a torrent, check the hashes, and install it. All your technically waiting for is the key.

So has anybody attempted this "upgrade from the RC" trick with any issues? I know it's preferable to go clean install from the RC, but I've been running it exclusively on a new computer for months, and there are some programs that will be a pain in the rear end to reinstall (downloaded games, etc.)

I haven't checked my online banking to make sure they didn't charge me, but they sent me an email saying it was canceled completely. I never even received a download link.

I upgraded from the RC to RTM back in August (I have MSDN accces) with that method, it was totally painless, although the install took 3 hours for some reason.

Upgrade takes a lot longer than a fresh install, I think it's just the fact that it checks every installed program or something, since it says something of the sort.

By the same token: I have no idea why I'm being forced to pay a shipping and handling fee for the delivery of a "free" Win 7 upgrade DVD to go with a recently purchased netbook with XP, since the eligible computer has no DVD drive to begin with and since I've been running free betas of Win 7 that were downloaded from MS itself a long time ago.

Correct, I'm assuming they are just going to send the box you'd buy at retail, which has both 64 and 32 bit disks. That's how my Vista Ultimate came, so I'm sure this will be the same.

Install a virus scanner after you get Windows 7 installed (Microsoft Security Essentials would be my suggestion), and have it scan Windows.old before you do anything with the files in there.

It's going to be a bit before I can get another 120 bucks together

Just FYI, if your desktop is running Ultimate or any version higher than the version you receive from the college deal (Home or Pro), then you can't use that upgrade on it. ie, you can't go from Ultimate to Pro or Pro to Home, etc. I'm sure you know that, but until I read the first post in this thread I didn't know that, luckily I got Ultimate 7 to upgrade my Ultimate Vista from technet. So, I just used the college deal to upgrade my laptop, which is in to get a screen replacement right now...so I don't mind waiting on a shipment.

Are you still able to use an upgrade license to do a clean install? With XP you just had to feed it a Win95/98 disc at some point in the install process. Is there some equivalent of that here?
