Guerrand posted:So just use True Launch Bar? The site says it's Win7 compatible. I was hoping to avoid that since it's a bit of a resource hog.... figured in the time between the release of WinXP and Win7 they'd decide that was valuable functionality to add. So is there any other way to accomplish a similar thing? any way to cascade a selection of shortcuts out so I don't have 15 things pinned to the taskbar? I guess I'll just learn to love the start menu if not.

I never said it's hard, it's just clutter, I guess I didn't realize I was being so unreasonable asking if there was a way to auto-hide them.

Why don't you just add the games folders and what not as extra toolbars? Just right click it and add toolbar, pin the rest of the programs and just set the taskbar to autohide?

Try Jumplist Launcher - it lets you add custom shortcuts to its jumplist, and can even do groups within the list, so it kind of works like a quick launch bar that hides.

I think I'll try this and Launchy out to see which works best.

It's just weird since from our perspective you're asking for a bar with shortcuts on it and that's exactly what the new taskbar gives you, except with bonus OS integration. Also of note, in my experience the start menu search bar can completely replace Launchy - just press winkey and start typing.

I use it as a list of my most frequently launched apps because I never got in the habit of using the start menu in WinXP... saves a few clicks (and hunting and pecking through the full program list) every time I want to launch an app. Pin your programs to the taskbar, set it to auto-hide. Does that not work like you want it to? ed: Just saw the post above... Just put your shortcuts to stuff in folders like someone else said, and then you'll have just categorized folders with handy pop out lists to launch things from, its not that hard, and its been in windows since like 98 or something.

My windows update keeps trying to download and install Microsoft.NET Framework 3.5 SP1 ...(KB982526) and it keeps failing, but telling me I need to shut down to install updates anyway. I shut down, and says "Installing 1 of 1 updates" and shuts down, but when I boot back up it does the same thing. Any clue on what is going on? Edit: And apparently my ping has been jumping around from 150-800 constantly, usually sticking around 270 before going back way high. If all your programs are closed after locking your computer, it almost certainly restarted. Test it out: Lock with Win+L and then immediately log back in. If all your programs are closed then, you've got something very wrong.

MMD3 posted:now to figure out why it takes a full minute to wake up from sleep when it only takes 30 seconds to boot Windows. This seems to happen with hybrid sleep enabled. I think the idea is that, in addition to going to sleep, it also transfers the contents of RAM to disk in case power is interrupted. In my experience, it seems to want to restore from the disk instead of properly detecting that the contents of RAM are intact. This process takes a long time, especially if you have a lot of RAM. Try turning off hybrid sleep under advanced power options and see what happens. Zorilla fucked around with this message at Jun 25, 2010 around 18:22 |

On laptops if I'm in sleep for long enough and it kicks over to hibernate, restoring the file to ram takes maybe 10-20 seconds less than a cold boot. But every time it's happened on a desktop PC when power was pulled, it takes five minutes to load everything and another five after that before all the disk activity dies off and everything stops lagging to hell and back. I. Don't. Get. It.

For some reason my Windows+D (which usually minimizes everything) has stopped working. Obviously both keys work, and now any program that I run (such as L4D2 or WoW) that is maximized full screen, sits behind the task bar, and I can't make the task bar stay behind whatever maximized program I have up. Edit: Show desktop doesn't work either.
