So I just discovered the "previous versions" function in 7 and I think I'm in love. I was able to replace a corrupted registry hive with one from a previous restore point without even booting into safe mode.

GreatGreen posted:Windows does not know what my monitor specifically is. I have a Sony FW-900 16:10 CRT monitor and Windows is labeling it "Generic Plug and Play Monitor." I've tried downloading the drivers online but Windows won't accept them, saying a better version is already installed. Generic plug and play monitor means it's reading the EDID data and displaying the resolutions the monitor claims to support. If you really want to disable EDID, grab a pair of pliers and pull pin #12 out of the d-sub connector. Don't blame me if your monitor smokes itself though.

GreatGreen posted:If I do that, will Windows 7 allow me to choose any resolution? Any resolution and refresh rate that your video card supports, including some that might (will) cook your monitor. Without any EDID data to go on, it only knows that there is a display connected - it doesn't know what type. E: Buy a VGA extension cord and pull pin 12 out of that, so if it starts detecting your monitor as a TV or something, you're not permanently hosed.

Is there some system monitoring tool for windows that isn't as ungodly complex as grafana but still has a web interface? I just want a way to see a cpu load and core temperature graph in a web browser instead of having to remote into the system.

You can configure your computer with a local user account instead of a Microsoft account if you aren’t connected to the internet during the OOBE and click through a bunch of hostile UI to tell them that no you really don’t want your PC’s credentials tied to an online user account. You’ll still need to use it if you want to install anything from the Microsoft store but once again there’s the option to apply the account to only the store if you navigate the hostile UI correctly. As for security, who knows? I certainly don’t trust it, but I’m not at the point where I’m putting Kali on all my PCs and swearing off Microsoft products forever.

MarcusSA posted:Remotely? Prob not but if you get your poo poo taken via a court order you are prob gently caress MS account or not. Yeah the mitigation for that threat model is full disk encryption with a complex passphrase and keeping your computer fully shut down except for when you are actively using it.

FunOne posted:Oh, and I can't setup the fingerprint scanner without also setting a PIN? What the gently caress? Oh if you're using a fingerprint scanner you may as well enable microsoft account for everything if your concern is really "someone getting a court order to access the computer" since it'll be just as easy for them and it'll save you the indignity of them physically forcing you to scan your fingerprint.

FunOne posted:I guess I'm just an idiot for wanting some level of security more than "send all my passwords to Redmond" but below "hard drive buried outside." Maybe I'm not worried about the CIA breaking into my house but I'd kinda like it if Sgt. Pile couldn't root through it. A cop can legally force you to unlock any device with your fingerprint during a search. It is in every way less secure than a password. If you want the convenience that's perfectly fine and ok, but even a microsoft account is more secure against your local keystone kop than fingerprint unlock because the state has to request access from a third party that could, theoretically, refuse to comply. https://news.bloomberglaw.com/privacy-and-data-security/forced-phone-fingerprint-unlock-is-constitutional-judge-says corgski fucked around with this message at 00:56 on Aug 20, 2020 |

Klyith posted:c. your threat model is dumb. Really the answer is this. If you want to defend against organized state actors you need to pay someone. If you want to keep Sgt. Porky and the boys down at the precinct from seeing your porn folder during a search at a traffic stop use a good password, bitlocker, and don't use biometrics or cloud authentication. If you want to defend against a random dipshit who wandered past your laptop anything that isn't a password of "password" will work.

It’s in your quote from the link, passwords are protected under the 5th amendment, biometrics are not. It’s a dumb loving distinction but one to keep in mind if your threat model includes pissed off cops. corgski fucked around with this message at 01:23 on Aug 20, 2020 |
