Anybody know of a fast VNC server that works with Windows 7?

Does SkyDrive integrate into Windows 7 at all? It would be really nice to just right-click a file and say "Send to SkyDrive". I'm guessing that 3rd party tools might exist but I'm wondering if Windows 7 comes with anything built-in. Also, does anybody use BitLocker encryption? It sounds decently useful especially if your motherboard has a TPM module (which mine doesn't, doh).

I wish they'd release the RTM on TechNet sooner

Are you talking about Dreamspark? Anyways, I have another question... Can you access Windows 7 remotely over the web? I'm very familiar with Remote Desktop but it's blocked at my work so I've been doing some research and it seems like two things exist: Remote Desktop Web Connection and Terminal Services Web (/tsweb directory) Are either of these available in Windows 7? Do they use regular HTTP(S)?

Dyscrasia posted:Try tunneling RDP over SSH? That works pretty well, assuming you install an SSH server on your PC and that its not blocked as well. Does the "RDP Web Connection" (or TS Web) work strictly over HTTP?

Does Windows 7 have any type of a built-in virtualization host? I'd like to run certain questionable (or one-time use) applications under a virtual machine so I'm protected and/or don't need to clutter the main operating system. I'm guessing that VMware works but that installs a whole bunch of extra drivers and it would be nice to have something supported natively by Win7...

Ahhh, that looks perfect! Do you know if the virtual machines are isolated completely from the host system? Could files (viruses) be transferred between them? ...or can the virtual machine be completely locked down to isolate the two environments?

lazydog posted:Windows 7 makes it even easier because one of the options with the built-in backup software lets you do a full disk image, and lets you create a bootable rescue disk. That's freaking awesome if so. I've been using TrueImage but I'd love for a built-in/native backup solution. As long as it's truely backing everything up 100% bit-by-bit.

That Windows Backup system image capability looks perfect. I typically image my systems (using TrueImage) but this looks quite a bit nicer. I wonder if you can create differential system images though...

What features are your favorite? So far I'm loving Windows Virtual PC (not XP mode, but real virtualization) and the built-in system image creation (eg. imaging the system drive). I just wish the system image creation could create differential backups (eg. here's an image after Windows 7 install, here's one with all drivers, etc).

PopeOnARope posted:I did a clean install too, using Daemon, and installed it after using the latest lite off the site. I didn't have to install SPTD manually or anything (RTM) Daemon Tools Lite says it includes SPTD 1.58 and is compatible with Windows 7 but the SPTD site says that 1.60 is needed? (I think?) I'm confused over the whole thing myself ![]() To make matters even more confusing, apparently Daemon Tools Pro includes SPTD 1.60.

Two quick questions, although they are related to IE8 instead of Windows 7 but I think it might still be relevant... 1) Can you have new windows open as tabs instead? (just like FireFox) 2) Can you have your saved passwords automatically populate the username and password automatically? (again, like FireFox) Right now you must type in your username and then it automatically fills in your password but I HATE this because I'll tab out of the username and start typing my password (thinking that it's not saved) and I end up screwing it up because the autofill will have activated. I think I'd like to use IE8 with Windows 7 but those two things are killing me. (...and no Adblock Plus, but I guess I could live without that)

Has anybody noticed any really slow performance with the nVidia 730i (MCP7A/Geforce 9400) chipset? I was only getting a disk performance index of 2.3 after installing but then I installed the nVidia chipset drivers and it raised it to about a 4.0. However, the system still feels pretty sluggish and takes a while to boot. The motherboard I'm using is a Gigabyte GA-E7AUM-DS2H.

Why does Windows 7 x64 show I only have 5.00 GB RAM usable out of 6 GB? I'm using a Gigabyte GA-E7AUM-DS2H motherboard with the onboard video card. The BIOS has the video card frame buffer set to 512 MB. The manual says that setting controls how much system memory is dedicated solely for the video card controller (which makes sense). When I only had 2 GB of RAM and was running Windows 7 x32, it said I had 1.5 GB usable out of 2 GB. Now that I have 6 GB RAM and am running Windows 7 x64 it says 5.00 GB usable out of 6 GB. What is going on? Why am I losing a full gigabyte of RAM?

I'm running Windows Server 2008 R2 as a file server and Windows 7 as my desktop machine. I've setup the file server to index all files but I'd like to "propagate" this index to my Windows 7 so if I do a file search it'll find it very quickly because it's already on the file server index. How can I do this? I can add my file server network shares to my Windows 7 indexer but won't that just re-index everything locally? I think the file server is already creating it's own index...

Can Windows 7 output audio over HDMI and SPDIF at the same time? I need to send SPDIF (Toslink/optical) audio to my A/V receiver, but I'd also like to send HDMI to my upstairs TV but I need it to include audio. It seems like Windows 7 can't output to two devices at the same time like that but please correct me if I'm wrong or if you can help me out...

How can I enable/disable a third monitor in Windows 7? I'm running Windows 7 with a GTX 480. It has three connected monitors but only two can be enabled at any given time. Are there any command-line (or GUI) tools to enable/disable my monitor configuration? For example, I want monitors 1 and 2 enabled and then with a hot-key change it to monitors 2 and 3. UltraMon does this but it has a ton of features that I don't need/want. I just want something simple...

Does the NVidia Control Panel still support user profiles? (for example, enabling my monitors, turning off 3D, etc) I could have sworn this existed in the past but it doesn't seem to be enabled in the latest version. (I'm not not talking per-application profiles but profiles that include all the other settings such as monitor resolution, setup, location, etc)

Is there anything in Windows 7 that allows me to assign tags (ie. "Important", "Family", "Private") to files and then search by them? For example, let's say I have pictures organized into directories like this: \Photos\Baby\Birth \Photos\Baby\Easter \Photos\Family\Christmas Now I'd like to tag individual pictures (or videos, documents, etc) inside those folders so I can do a search. That might be a bad example but hopefully you get the idea. I'm hoping I don't need a third party application (because I'd like to tag any kind of file; not just pictures) EDIT: I just saw that tags are built into Windows 7 but only for certain (very few??) file types. Can this be expanded or changed to include all file types? Vinlaen fucked around with this message at Jul 18, 2011 around 15:02 |
