OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE: Bloody-nose rocker turned motivational speaker and TV personality performs on solo piano with the Calder Quartet, a contemporary classical ensemble described as, "quite possibly the finest - and definitely the most adventurous - American chamber ensemble" (Bloomberg News). Stimulating all parts of your brain, A.W.K. and Calder Quartet have teamed up to perform a collaborative show, mixing reverence with irreverence, and offering their audience a chance for both rapt listening and raucous dancing. Challenging music lovers to explore their comfort zones, A.W.K. and Calder Quartet perform together towards a liberated and impassioned definition of art.

Their collaboration began at the acclaimed Wordless Music Series in New York City, where they received favorable coverage and critical response, including write ups in both the NY Times and LA Times. A.W.K. and Calder Quartet had original works commissioned by The Explorers Club, premiered at the Club's renowned annual dinner in New York City. Perhaps Metal Edge Magazine best described their recent work together when they wrote: "It was strange as hell and it pretty much ruled."

"The Calder Quartet's performance with Andrew W.K. for the Wordless Music series in November of 2008 was, without a doubt, one of the all-time highlights of the series' concerts to date. From the Calder's selections of music for string quartet and electronics by Philip Glass and Christine Southworth, to Andrew's improvisations on themes of Bach, to the final closing numbers from the Andrew W.K. songbook (with certain raucous audience members joining the band onstage), it was a night I will not soon forget and hope to be able to repeat soon." - Ronen Givony, Wordless Music Series Producer

Andrew will be performing piano works inspired by his new "55 CADILLAC" album.

After the success of Andrew's 2008 release of Japanese pop rock covers, Andrew W.K. was approached by Sunrise Inc., the owners of the Gundam franchise, to record an album of classic Gundam music, to celebrate Gundam's 30th anniversary.

The album of English-language rock covers will be released on September 9th, in Japan, by Andrew's longtime label, Universal Music Japan. The release will feature the music from the first "Mobile Suit Gundam" television series and movie trilogy as Andrew's versions of the Gundam score and background music, plus Andrew will reenact Gundam's opening narration and the famous memorial speech that the Gihren Zabi character gives for his fallen brother.

The album's front cover artwork features original artwork illustrated by respected Gundam artist, Akira Yasuda. The image depicts Andrew flying through space next to the Mobile Suit Gundam. The album's design also features special photographs by Andrew Strasser.

I got my CD in the mail today. On the front of it he autographed "KYLE IS A KING! LOVE, ANDREW". There's a few random stickers in the bag too and a handwritten letter that says "DEAR KYLE, I WANT YOU TO KNOW HOW EXCITED I AM TO HAVE YOU WITH ME ON THIS RIDE!!! PLEASE ENJOY THIS DRIVE AND ALWAYS PARTY HARD!!! LOVE, ANDREW WK"

That made my day.

As for the album, it's pretty good but I don't really know what specifically I can say about it, as I'm still on the first few tracks. If anyone cares enough to have a question that I could possibly answer I will. For anyone wondering, it's 39:37 long.

edit - loud guitar out of nowhere in the last minute of the last song. He couldn't resist.

His history is very odd.

Are you familiar with the 25 Suaves? Pete Larson, one half of the band, was AWK's teacher in high school, and put out some of his early stuff on his record label, Bulb. I saw AWK play Pete's living room shortly before he started to get big. It was seriously fun.

I have to admit that I got really bored with his schtick pretty quickly though. Thought he was terrible on the tour with The Locust.

Let me preface what I'm about to ask by saying that I love AWK's attitude, life philosophy, and his music. It picks me and and helps me remember that there are people who just want to love each other and have fun.

With that said, is anyone else scared for him? I feel like anyone that turns every negative experience into a positive one is somewhat escaping from the reality of their feelings. I'd imagine that his unstoppable positivity would deal poorly with feelings such as the loss of something loved very much, like a close family member or friend. Turning grief like that into something positive seems like an escape mechanism.

This isn't to say he wouldn't feel sad if such a thing occurred, in fact I'm positive that he would, but can anyone truly keep such a demeanor up for a lifetime? I watched his interview on that local news station and he mentions that he just wants to make people happy because he's had a lot of pain in his own life. It makes me feel like he hates the pain so much that he artificially replaces it.

The reason I feel like this is that I used to have his type of personality. For a number of years after being a child/teen I had an attitude of universal love, appreciation for everything living and not and made hundreds of friends in a short period of time because I treated each person as if they were my best friend and made them feel loved no matter who they were or what they'd done. I had decided to make my world the way I wish the rest of it was. This attitude came undone with a crash a few years later, however, after once again coming into contact with truly sad, sad things. The reality of the rest of the world caught up with me again and I had to deal with a lot of the things from my past that still hurt me, that I hadn't dealt with and that I had been escaping from with my super positive attitude. I had to admit to myself that I was living was a dream world.

My understanding is that long term happiness requires a successful balance of emotions, but he seems to only think positively about everything.

Is this healthy? I worry that his world will crash like mine had, but perhaps in a worse way, considering how deep into his dream world he's pushed himself.

Oh, and there's a new Pitchfork interview: http://pitchfork.com/news/36449-and...-ways-to-party/
