I currently use the 7800i at work, and we're slowly starting to see the 8350i migrate into our company. That being said, they are TERRIBLE phones. I'm guessing you work in the construction and/or service industry as that's the only businesses these days that still use that horrible DirectConnect from Nextel.

The 7800i and 8350i do the DirrectConnect thing well, but as far as other BlackBerry features go, they're terrible. Sprint doesn't exactly keep their iDen network up to snuff as relatively few people still use it, so data transfer speeds are abysmal. (At least in the Houston area.) Additionally, I indeed have to download my SMS messages! :wtc: I'm actually trying to get my company to set me up with your alternate option: get a regular Sprint BlackBerry and then carry around a beater Nextel for DirectConnect.

Some of the subcontractors we interact with who have to have DirectConnect have been switching over to Verizon's service. Their Push2Talk (or whatever they call it) is integrated with their regular network, so it doesn't have the same network issues that Sprint/Nextel has with their decrepit iDen service. I've heard nothing but good stories from them; however unfortunately you of course can't use the Push2Talk feature with folks on Sprint/Nextel.

So I guess in an ideal world, get your company to switch to Verizon's service, but since that highly unlikely, get the two phones.

Service Industry: In a casino.

What exactly do you mean when you say download? Do they still pop up as notifications, but you just have to download them to read them?

Is the data slow enough to make you go "screw it, ill wait till i get home"?

I guess two phones isn't too bad...

As for the MMS/Internet service, you need to talk with your employer's IT department and confirm what is and is not allowed with their BES. They can use the IT Policy feature on the BES to lock down the device's functions/make them unavailable. The corporation I work for has MMS disallowed on their devices so even if they have it on their mobile plan it can't be used. I've lost count of how many times I've gotten calls about people bitching that they can't receive or send hilarious pictures to their friends :saddowns:

The non 3G networks still perform relativly fast I had a Curve 8310 on AT&T and the browser was usable and pulled in pages relatively quick on their EDGE network i'm not sure how Sprint's compares though.

EDGE is 100-250 kbps. iDEN is decrepit, at a blazingly fast rate of 10 kbps. I would rather use the 8330.

Get the 8330. You should get the Tour which is an infinitely better phone than the 8330 but the 8330 is alright. iDEN which is what the 8350 uses for cellular data does 10-15 kbps. Yes, you read that right.

I tried downloading it over the air, and RIM's website says I have to use a USB cable and my computer.

I tried downloading it on my computer, and RIM says it needs to be done over the air.

Any suggestions for a direct link I can visit? I'm on Sprint, if ti matters.

It has been decided I need a Blackberry for work. The company will only let me access my email via BES. Now I need to make a decision and I am asking for goon help.

What's in concrete:

-I am going to be using Sprint/Nextel.

-A BBerry to use BES.

What I need:

-Access to the internet.

-SMS and MMS.

-500 Minutes.

-DIRECT loving CONNECT. (this causes all the problems.)

I see two options, keep my Motorola ic502 for direct connect and get an 8330 Curve -OR- ditch the ic502 and get the 8350i.

My concerns with getting the 8350i are data transmission speeds, SMS ( Sprint rep. said I will have to download my SMS messages? huh?) and overall voice quality on the Nextel side of Sprint.

Does anyone have this phone? Can you tell me about it...how well it works with data, how the SMS works, and call quality? Do you not use the internet now because it is too slow?

OR do you think it is worth carrying two phones to have 3g speeds with the standard 8330?

iDEN is an adaptation of a Motorola trunked radio technology, and is so old and outdated the handsets might as well be made of wood.

Yeah, I got one last Tuesday. The retailer got six in, and I got the fifth one an hour after delivery. He got 10 more in Thursday, and they were all gone by Friday. Now he says they're on backorder, doesn't know when the next batch will arrive.

Unfortunately, I've got the "screen ripples when you touch the trim on the sides or the four big buttons or trackball" problem, so I'm hoping they get more in before my trial period is over.

I absolutely love the new BBM. The UI finally looks like it's only a little bit behind everyone else. The QR code addition is also amazing (for those who don't know... You can add BB contacts by just hovering the camera over the other persons QR code block in the phone). Actually, you can generate your own QR code for a bunch of things (urls, sms's, emails etc etc). RIM has to build in a bit more support for it though.

Imagine the potential though. See a product you really like and want more information on it? Take your phones camera and hover it over the code block. Suddenly a webpage starts to load. Too lazy to write down someones information on a business code? No problem. On the back of the card is a QR block. Trying to get more information about that woman you're stalking? Just Google for her code block on the net.

I posted this on crackberry.com but have gotten no responses so far. Help?

I don't have access yet to our BES, the administrators are in the process of providing me this so I can't verify settings.

I manage about 25 users with Blackberry's and on occasion one will stop sending and sometimes receiving emails. When they go to send they get the "Dreaded Red X" Every time this has happened I've had to have to user removed and re-added to the BES and have them OTA activate. The reason this is important is that one of our VP's just traveled to China and lost access to the BES when they got there. Aside from phone issues and plan problems that eventually got resolved, they also lost connectivity with the BES and had to be removed and re-added.

Is this something that can happen somewhat often or are things not quite right on our BES? I won't be able to get much out of the current admin as he does nothing but make sure the server is running (most of the time.)

EDIT:

Also WTF is taking them so long to put out Texas Hold'em Kings 3 for the Storm? It's pissing me off quite a bit.

You think that's bad? At least you have an app. Try having to call your google voice number in order to then be prompted to make a call. That's how it is on non-smartphones.

The device migration seems easy enough, but will I then have to tell my contacts that my PIN has changed and readd everyone to BB Messenger?

What are some 8900 cases people like? I had a rubbery one for my Pearl that worked pretty well, but I have no idea who made it.

Is it possible to switch off non-BIS data? I'll be traveling internationally next week and I'll have T-Mobile's BB Unlimited International service which apparently includes any BIS data, but will charge you for any regular GPRS/EDGE data. If there isn't an option to do this, would something like deleting the APN work without breaking anything else? Failing all that, what apps use BIS data? I'm mainly concerned about Google Talk, MSN, Facebook and the built-in browser.

I've had luck with the following in some cases where users travelling (local in states or internationally)

Go to Settings ==> Options ==> Advanced Options ==> Service Book ==> Highlight/delete "Desktop[SYNC]" service book. Wait 30 seconds then press blackberry(option) button and undelete then give it about 30 seconds see what happens.

This is kind of a 50/50 fix for me it sometimes works other times it doesn't. I find myself having to have people wipe/reactivate their phone or sometimes rebuild their BES account entirely it really depends but it doesn't seem to be an uncommon occurance if you ever contact a carrier's "Enterprise Support" half the time if they're stumped they just say "Well have you recreated their account?" The environment that I work in is Lotus/Domino so i'm not sure how it works when using Exchange

Let me save you from an unbelievably bad carrier.

  • Sign up for a Google Voice invite right now, I got mine yesterday and I applied for one last week
  • Sign up for EPRP on Sprint, which has unlimited texts and data + 550 minutes and a bunch more stuff, check the Sprint thread out for more details
  • The phone to choose is the Tour, which is much better than the 8330.
  • Install the Google Voice app on your BlackBerry and make calls from that

It's good to have choices, it's bad to have choice overload without an easy way to differentiate. Of the Blackberry devices out right now, I don't see much of a reason for more than four or five. Ten seems like overkill.
