Yeah I should say that I'm talking about a vanilla wordpress install. God help you if you're trying to port some kind of customized monstrosity. When we get clients who have setups like that we tell them that it's time to start over Wordpress really starts to fall apart once you get past a basic blog/collection of landing pages

I've copied the files over, created the database then imported the old database, installed Wp using the files from the original install. It seems to have half worked - WP is all there, the themes are all there, the custom fields and data within have all imported - however, all media files (which are definitely present, I can see them in wp-includes > uploads in the folder) aren't showing as uploaded. I've tried importing via WP Import as well, and it basically says "media failed to import..." for every file. This is a property website, with 1000's of images, all the properties are imported (with the description, address, etc), but the corresponding photos aren't visible? (Neither are stuff like logos, icons etc). Have I done something wrong?

I'm building a store for hand-made jewellery and need to create a list of line items from unprocessed orders so the client knows which items to make (3 different orders could have the same product, so they know to make 3 of those etc). I'm guessing this is similar to your farmer's picking? I've not looked into it yet but my plan is to use a custom WP query to filter the line items and create a table in the admin using the data, probably on a separate option page within the WooCommerce menu. I don't think its something you can get by default.

I have a client that's big on displaying related posts or pages in sidebars on pages. He likes having precise control over it (he doesn't like anything to be automated), so I currently have ACF relationship fields set up on every single page and post on his site which allows him to choose exactly which post shows up where. However now he wants to be able to display related content on archive and category pages, which I don't think is going to be possible for me to do the same way since those pages can't have custom fields attached to them. Any ideas for plugins or techniques that would work well here?

What's the best way to show unique "current navigation" menus on each page? If I click on a top-level item, say "Item2" (or any of its sub-items), and navigate to that page, I want to see a side menu with Item2 at the top and all of Item2's sub-items under it. I've used the Page Specific Navigation plugin and it does the job, but it's a royal pain in the rear end, because by default it shows every item, and on every page you have to manually check the items you don't want to see on that page. So if you add a new page you have to go back to every other page and uncheck the new item.

Someone just wanted to put a 130MB video file on one of their WordPress sites. This far exceeds the PHP file upload limit on my server, and I'm not inclined to change that, because your big video files really should go on YouTube, but politics. Anyway, I had them upload a placeholder file (I think it was a renamed PDF) with the same file name, then I uploaded the real file via FTP and had it replace the placeholder. This worked, except that the WordPress media library now thinks the file is 70K instead of 130M. It's a silly little cosmetic thing, but I'd like to fix it if I can. Is there an easy way to do so?

Can anyone suggest a gallery plugin that would provide the following functionality while not being a pile of poo poo? • Ability to create multiple galleries • Galleries not tied to specific pages, but can be easily embedded on any page or post • Ability to retrieve entire gallery as PHP object so I can create my own view and/or a robust templating system • Titles & captions for images

Wordpress people: Halp! I have a client's site that WAS working perfectly until last night, at which point I did a few innocuous things on the admin panel that for the life of me cannot seem like they would have affected what the site currently is doing. They asked to have Google Analytics tied to the site, so I installed the Google Analytics by Yoast plugin (I already had been using the SEO by Yoast), and while I was at it I updated the "Simple Subscribe" and "Instagram Feed" plugins, which were a single iteration out of date. Not noticing anything wrong with the site's main page, I carried on my merry way, and decided to go above and beyond to connect the site to their google.com/webmastertools account as well. I followed the directions to verify the site on register.com (for that is the shite host they insisted on using to save $12 a month over the Dreamhost suggestion I made 40 times leading up to tonight) which was a process where you create a new TXT Record with the Google verification code (for those familiar with register.com's control panel, once in the product (domain)'s page, under 'Advanced Technical Settings' , 'Edit TXT Records') -- added the new one, and then noticed that about half of my theme's functionality had ceased working. Now, I'm not sure that the TXT record addition was the exact moment it all broke, but I can't see that a trusted Yoast plugin/updating two working plugins that work with my version of WP (4.0) would have broken 50% of my theme's functionality, especially after I disabled and deleted them. I've tried just about everything I can think of to get it back to working. I contacted register.com, they gave some canned wrong answer about GA code being in the footer when it should be in the header - checked that by looking at the source, false. I disabled and deleted the Yoast Google Analytics plugin anyway. I contacted register.com again, they told me there was no 12-24 hour delay to change DNS settings or anything like that for a TXT record entry - and most of the site works fine including the index page, and the AJAX navigation sorting. It just will not display any of my Posts or any of my Recipes (a customized post template page.) it says 'Page not found' and loads the default home page. Maybe there IS a 12-24 hour delay from doing the TXT record addition, but it's only been 5 hours since I quit messing with it? I didn't come away with great confidence that they knew what they were talking about. Just seems odd that the index and my AJAX sorting would work, but my links to everything else have turned into duds. I've re-uploaded the entire theme multiple times, including using older known working versions. The admin panel works fine, all my posts and recipes are still there, in the correct categories to work within my theme. My permalink settings are still correctly setup to handle my theme's functions. My template pages that handle the post and recipe functionality are all still there, and are all still in the correct Template style to make the theme work. I rebuilt one of them from scratch thinking maybe it just needed a kick - nope. I've disabled every single plugin, still nothing - I find it unlikely that "Simple Subscribe" and "Instagram Feed" plugins could make my site half-work - if they broke it, they'd have fully broken it - and since my database seems fine and all my content is still there, I don't think the plugins have done anything to my db that could be the issue. I checked the htaccess file, and the wp-config.php file - both seem fine. So my #1 question is: Should I attempt to re-install wordpress altogether via FTP or will this cause massive issues/gently caress my database up? And if that's not a good plan, any other suggestions? If you need to see the site to troubleshoot, send me a PM if possible as I'd rather not share the URL publically.

Just post the url dude, you can always edit it out later. Unless I missed something you didn't actually say what's broken. What's the actual problem? I can't imagine it's anything to do with the TXT record. That's a DNS Zone thing, nothing to do with your actual site.

I know you've deactivated Yoast, but maybe it's changed a permalinks setting - this could screw with your posts displaying, especially if you're using a custom post type? I've had the same thing happen to me before, I kept getting 404's on posts and it was because Yoast had "prettified" permalinks or something, problem persisted even with Yoast gone until I fixed the permalink / post type issue. Would be easier to know what's going on if we could see the site

you never really said what the exact problem was but if the landing page is displaying but nothing else that definitely sounds like a permalink issue

Thanks for the input guys, your permalink suggestions got me going on the right track. I sent a couple of you PM's with some more details but you can probably disregard as I *think* I've tracked down the issue. After a LOT of research (I've been up working on this all night until 7 am twice in a row now, I'm meant to be on vacation), I really think something has changed with the register.com server configuration that has screwed this up -- the only thing I can think of right now is that perhaps FollowSymLinks and AllowOverride All are disabled in the server config. Also maybe mod_rewrite is not enabled. I've got a support ticket out to register.com right now because their control panel is so impossible to use I can't tell if this is something I can fix myself (or if it's even something a user account has control over.) When I use the default permalinks in WP, it works (but is bad for SEO) but when I try to use the custom (pretty) permalinks, it breaks, which makes me think mod_rewrite isn’t enabled or the .htaccess file isn’t being read. This happens on even a fresh WP/theme install of the site in a subdirectory on the same host, even without ever enabling the plugins I've been using. (Yoast) I've got it set up using the default WP permalinks right now and everything is functioning "correctly". I've had enough issues with register.com not letting me upload files smoothly and giving me canned/wrong answers to my questions that I may just move the hosting and solve this once and for all.

The site suddenly slowed to a crawl (like 20seconds to load anything}, then their customer support took 9 days to get back to me, only after I went nuts at them on Twitter, and basically said 'the server's fine, your site's too complex'. Eventually ended up moving the site to Apis Networks based on a forum recommendation and it's now blisteringly fast (with great tech support). Glad your site is working again!

Anyone have suggestions for scaling Wordpress? I'm not talking about throwing more power at a single server; I'm talking about using load balancers and multizone hosting to scale on demand. Database is no big deal. I can toss that in a high replication multi-AZ configuration and I'm good to go. Ditto with static files which can go to Amazon S3. The problem I'm running into is with plugins, themes, and user uploads. Wordpress loves absolute references to the place that files are stored. To me, that means two possible solutions: 1. Use some sort of network-based filesystem to mount an S3 bucket. 2. Write a plugin that rewrites all URLs on a page to a corresponding structure in S3. The problems with either of them are pretty apparent. As far as I can tell there's no reliable network-based filesystem that could achieve #1 with reasonable fault tolerance and hijacking every content outputting filter seems like it would introduce obscene overhead. I'm worried that this is a problem without a decent solution. Anyone care to weigh in?

I made a Web server template, that mounts /etc/httpd/conf.d and /var/www/html over the network, from a group of Gluster file servers. I had three Gluster instances, in three different availability zones, with quorum required for writes (but not reads), and everything worked pretty well. I couldn't tell any difference between that, and a local file system, in terms of Web server performance after a couple minutes of warm-up for the Web servers.
