Yeah, it does seem like a contradiction, though don't decent defensive loads use flash retardants to cut that to a minimum?

My revolver makes such a gigantic fireball I don't think it matters if some of the gas is directed up. Hell, your night vision is shot, having something to help you keep on target without even having to aim seems handy; assuming it helps of course.

I think the bigger issue with porting is the actual blast/debris harming you if you shoot from a confined position. This gun is probably going to be a fancy range toy for most its life though, she wanted something different from her K38.

Range report on the S&W 642 Power Port; It was odd getting used to DAO on a j-frame with gutter sights, but both of us where getting it in the torso at 21ft with some wadcutters 1/4 a box in and got better after that. It wasn't too loud using that ammo, I tested it outside, under the shelter at the range and then without hearing protection fully on, all where manageable and far better than what a shotgun/carbine would do to ears indoors. I did show her how the port can harm you if you fire it from odd/restrained positions by placing a sheet of paper over the port and promptly shredding it with the vertical blast, though during firing none of us got showered with unburnt powder or lead shavings. Not bad, an interesting gun.

I have a couple basic 5-shot HK speed loaders for my Bodyguard, but I'm having a bitch of a time using them. The rounds line up fine in the cylinder and all and I can get the loader unlocked, but it seems to require quite a bit of wiggling to get all 5 rounds to drop out of the loader and into the cylinder.

Right now I drop the rounds from the loader as far into the cylinder as they'll go, then do the unlock-and-wiggle dance to get the 5 rounds out. Am I loving up somewhere?

Related, what do most people think of things like the Biachi Speed Strip?

Anyone?

Speed Strips aren't bad but obviously they take practice. Personally, I find it easier to load from belt pouch. I have one that holds six rounds in pairs; it's easy to pull out two rounds at a time and load them quickly. It lies fairly flat on the belt so it's more concealable than a speedloader pouch, and it maintains its orientation, unlike a Speed Strip which, depending on method of carry, can end up sitting upside-down or sideways in the pocket.

The problem you're having with the speeloaders - is it a matter of the speedloader not clearing the left grip panel? If that's it, try a different set of grips.

Wow, I never noticed that. it actually gets caught a little by S&Ws own panel.

What's the pouch you use?

EDIT: Something like this?

It's kind of old school - it's a Strong brand pouch. I'm a big fan of their leather gear, even if it isn't the easiest to find.

Here it is with the top flap open:

Here it is all the way open - the pouch is designed so the rounds fold out for easier access.

Also, I had to laugh because I just saw Speed Strips in .410 for the Judge.

YES! That is exactly what I need for the LCR. I have a Speed Strip which is great to just throw in my pocket, but it would be slow as molasses to reload from.

I find it easiest to reload from speed strips if you only load five rounds like this:
00-000

It gives a little more play in the strip, which helps to reload quicker.

Easy-- TK Custom makes great moonclips and accessories. Get the thicker, stainless steel clips; they're worth it.

Just for shits & giggles, where did you find your 625-8? That's an uncommon piece, even for .45ACP revolvers...

I suspect I am still
terribly pleased.

Took my mother to the gunshow to see what she liked.

3 guns:

Ruger SP-101, with the short barrel.

A Rossi .38spl that looked a bit iffy to me. I think she only liked it because it had these grips on it:

And she liked the 2 S&W Model 36 Chief's Specials.

I am inclined to buy both a Ruger and the Smith, since I would like both of them for myself anyway, and I figure I can get those grips for either (well the Smith at least) then let her shoot both and pick.

Anything to look out for when buying the model 36?

I always get it mixed up in my head, but I'm fairly certain that the 36 isn't rated for +p ammo. Other than that, just do the normal revolver checkout on it.

Just went down and grabbed a Taurus Model 85 Ultra-lite at the gun store in town. My first revolver, this should be fun. Hopefully I'll get to the range on Saturday, I haven't shot my Glock 30 yet either.

This gun is so light compared to the regular 85. Only 5 shots instead of 6, but should be perfect for concealed carry.

They're not so keep the hot loaded stuff out of your gun. .38 spl should do the job well enough.

Yeah, I don't think she could handle the recoil of +p very well anyway. I suspect in the end she will have the SP-101 and be firing .38spl out of it given her wrist strength. But, until I can get her shooting both of the guns I won't know for sure.

Taurus revolvers have improved pretty well in quality lately. Their semi-autos are still pretty rough across the board though.

I've got a Taurus Model 66 with a 6" barrel with about 700 rounds through it and I haven't noticed any problems with it. Really fun to shoot.

I think they had a bad rep awhile back, I've heard quite a few complaints about the timing on some of the older Taurus revolvers. From what I hear the semi-autos are still poo poo.

I looked for one of these and couldn't find one, so I did the next best thing: bought the Galco version of it. Only thing is, it doesn't have holes cut for a belt. I loaded it up last night and just wrapped it around the belt, and it held pretty well, so I'm not all that concerned.

I think its just lingering reputation. They are sort of like the Uwe Boll of firearms manufacturing. They get a little better with each passing year, but have no compunctions about doing whatever the hell they want.

Consequently they have made some bad movies guns and a lot of mediocre guns. Through sheer trial and error they have a pretty decent line of revolvers, and even great little cult guns like Postal The Judge.

As much as everyone seems to bitch about their guns, for the price there are usually few complaints these days. I myself have enjoyed shooting both the judge, and a PT 24/7 in .45. People can say what they will about their automatics, but at 1500 rounds that gun is still working without a hitch.

Actually, here is the stock photo. The only difference between the Strong and the Galco that I can see is the lack of belt slits. It is constructed and laid out the same way. Galco calls it a 2x2x2 ammo carrier. Mine is black, not natural like this picture.
