They hit me for the full $50, but my transfer fee is only $20. I figured as long I stayed under $300 out the door, I was golden.

Thanks; I kept it pretty simple. I took the grips off, and I removed the forward sideplate screw so I could take the cylinder off to make cleaning easier. I got some extra-fine steel wool, dabbed some CLP on it, and just went to work. I used a standard copper brush with CLP for the chambers and the barrel, and a smaller one to get inside the frame and the crane pivot. Half the cleaning job was just making sure I cleaned up all the steel wool residue from all the little nooks and crannies.

Plain black plastic; they're Barami Hip-Grips, an old school method of IWB carry.

I wasn't planning on doing any tuning on it. I do plan on shooting the hell out of it though. I agree that the wood grips look best, and I specifically tracked one down with the Magnas on it for nostalgia's sake, but they get in the way of using speedloaders. The fake stag grips are actually the most comfortable of the "small" grips, and they're slim enough to allow unimpeded speedloader use. But there's something about the Barami Hip-Grip that appeals both to my sense of nostalgia and my sense of practicality. It's a weird combination.

I might end up running it with Pachmayrs or something in the end. I've got a good OWB holster for the gun, so it's not like I need the Hip-Grip for carry.

DJ's by my place had 3 sets of them when I last dug through their grips box. I have seen quite a few $5 pairs at the shows. The factory grips are kind of small, I think most people have always hated them and slapped pachmayr grips on them as soon as they could. If you end up at the Puyallup show before you make that order I doubt you will have any trouble finding a super cheap set.

Hmm? See any Super Blackhawk grips cheap at the wetside shows? I still need to replace the factory rubber monolith on my .44.

I see them. Thinking back over the last couple shows I think the cheapest I have seen them was $20, although I was just looking at the factory Ruger walnut + medallion grips. There is a guy who usually has a case full of them also, but I think his are usually a bit more. But if you want some of those fancy laminate grips he always seems to have them.

One of the problems I find with the Ruger single action grips is that they don't seem to be taken off and tossed in a drawer to be forgotten about as often as the double action grips are. So they are a bit more rare. The second problem is that there are guys who just buy them and resell them every time they see a set at a decent price. I have gotten to the point with grips now that if I see them I'll just pick them up. I suspect I am not alone in this practice.

If you go to the Puyallup show I know you will find a pair, I just couldn't guarantee that they would be very cheap.

Unless I am missing something, no. The next show is Monroe and that is next weekend. The next Puyallup show isn't until the 20th. But yeah, I will be going to the next Puyallup show, probably with a couple people. Should be a good one given the large gap between shows.

I don't really plan on buying much though, probably just cruise for more $150 Bearcats and gun related bric-a-brac like grips or cheap parts. I wouldn't mind finding more $10 revolver frames, my stepdad is having a lot of fun using the Ruger XR3-Red (single six/blackhawk) frame I found to make grips.

Long gap + Pavillion? Yeah, that is going to be a real hassle to get around in. Last year it was almost impossible to walk. I guess it will pay to get there early and stand in line. On the bright side there have been a lot of good revolver prices lately, interspersed with the usual overpricing assholes.

Factory walnut would still be an immense improvement over factory Hogues.

Of course, I'm over here in Spokane, and the closest I'll likely get to wetside shows is next weekend's one down in Tri-Cities (Pasco? I think), and I might not get to that if my tax return doesn't arrive before next Thursday.

Well I can search for grips too and let you know when I find a pair. I'm sure wrapping them up in come bubble wrap and popping them in the mail would be pretty cheap. I would need to know if you have a price range, are picky about condition, and if you need the screw with them.

I'm really 2/5ths compulsive collector, 2/5ths compulsive deal hunter/haggler and only 1/5ths actual shooter anyway. I think I enjoy cruising the gunshows and haggling with old guys over a pair of grips or a spare cylinder more than actually shooting. Although I suspect a lot of that has to do with how much of a hassle it is to go shooting around here.

It ends here.

Work in progress on a .357 n.m. Blackhawk. The original 6&1/2" barrel was threaded wrong/tilted in the factory and the sights had to be adjusted to the utmost left to get hits to the paper. It also had a cinch in it, right after the forcing cone.

I swapped the barrel to a 10" forged one with less grooves and a more favorable twist. Threaded it so that I have a pretty tight cylinder gap, 0,003", to allow high pressures with 200 grain bullets.

Making later a set of Weigand-style swappable front sight blades and a base, casting a pair of brass grip plates and trying to swap the aluminum cast grip frame to a steel one.

Btw, anyone here have a steel vaquero, or etc, grip frame that they'd be interested in selling?

What the hell, Miso? They were ambitious (or evil) enough to strip the finish from every last surface of the cylinder crane, but they couldn't be bothered to take the grips off in their quest for bare metal?

While I do believe that it was a crime to strip the bluing off that gun, I also kind of like how it looks now. After doing some searches on finishes I couldn't come up with an answer to this question: is there a way to artificially give a gun that aged patina, the sort you see on really old guns?

I think it would rule if you could make that gun look like it was from the 1870s.

I would have thought seriously about having the gun browned if had been buffed. The markings on the frame are still in great shape so I'm just going to go for the make it look fancy and new with parkerization. I'm still trying to sort out the grip situation because I don't like the small factory grips, and the Pachmayrs that I like seem to be hard to come by.

I'm pretty sure I'd need the screw - the Hogues have a bottom-screw that fits into a swiveling strap-piece on the bottom og ther grip frame.

$20-25 (I'm a cheap bastard) plus shipping, I guess. Wood, not totally destroyed/covered in spooge/terribly broken - worn, gouged, chipped OK.

I figured I might as well try your luck, seeing as how I might not get to the Tri-Cities show, and I think the next Spokane one is April. Who knows, amybe someone else will pop up with some wood to offer?

You know, the factory grips don't seem comfortable when you are just holding the gun, but I actually kind of like them when I shoot the gun. When I took my friend and his wife out shooting she liked the gun with the factory grips on it quite a lot. I would have thought she would gravitate to shooting .38 special out of it, but no, she shot 44 .357 mag rounds out of it (all but the 6 she let her husband shoot) and loved it.

I do know what you mean though, the factory grips are kind of wrong. Of course, that means they are a dime a dozen used.

Yes, there are a lot of different Ruger grips. Regular blackhawk grips are XR3 or XR3-RED, depending on the age. If you take the grips off the frame says. Super blackhawk grips are a third type.

This is a great guide to Ruger grips: http://www.gunblast.com/Hamm_Ruger-SA-GripFrames.htm

I'll keep an eye out for you. I have just been buying up all the Ruger grips I find for a decent price anyway. I'll let you know if I come up with anything.
