Yeah, fairly rare gun, amazing build quality. In that condition $500 would be a good price, you wouldn't regret owning it.

I figured anything that combined "five screw" with the phrase "Combat Masterpiece" had to be a pretty sweet gun...I'm keeping my eye on it, still seems ridiculously underpriced at the moment. Hopefully I can report back around this time tomorrow that I won it.

Double post to share this Model 15-2 that seems pretty underpriced, even given its cosmetic condition, in case anyone is interested.

I don't know what goes here.

I just bought a S&W Model 15-3 and I really want a cheap old (surplus, maybe?) holster for range fuckery/Barney Fife cosplay. Is there a decent place to find such a thing online? Also, what are the little belt pouches that hold cartridges in twos? Infrared had one, and it looked awesome.

Also, my Model 15 was $280 out the door, did I do okay?

I would say; I paid $400 for my 15-3 and that was the cheapest I've ever seen one around here. Of course, I'm in California, so some stuff stays about the same price as the national average, while other stuff quadruples or more.

I'm not the resident Smith expert, but assuming it's not a rusted/clapped out piece of poo poo, I'd say you did great.

Mine were made by a company called Strong Leather; they used to make a lot of awesome stuff but they've really trimmed their model line way down in recent years.

I think the only company who makes anything similar anymore is Galco.

vvv I was bothered by the lack of belt loops at first, but so long as your belt is actually snug against your body I don't see how the thing could come loose.

The Galco model works well though. And if you absolutely MUST have belt loops, you can just cut them in yourself.

I paid $300 out the door for my M15-4 and I've already had 2 people try to buy it from me. Its not that great looking but at the same time it is not rusted or pitted; just holster wear and a few dings to the right grip panel from holster carry. In otherwords, a great 'shooter'. The Model 15s seem to be getting rather popular lately?

School me on revolvers for pocket carry. Is the 642 airweight my best bet for the money? I can't really go upward of 350 on the actual gun. I do go to gunsmithing school so I'll be able to do any work needed/tweak the gun/make some grips, which leaves my options a bit more open.

When did smith start making guns that can take +P? Am I at a serious disadvantage with normal pressure hollowpoints?

I'm almost considering buying one of the $250 something older smiths that have been posted and chopping it down but I don't know where to start.

442 and 642 are probably your best bet. You can get -2s without the lock if you look around. As Misha mentioned, the only difference between the 442 and 642 is the finish and type of steel. The 442 has a blued carbon steel barrel and cylinder and black finished aluminum frame. The 642 has a stainless barrel and cylinder with a sort of grey/silver finished aluminum. 642 and 442 pro models are out there as well with no lock and they are cut for moonclips. Another good option would be an LCR, I don't have one and have never shot one but people seem to like them, especially the trigger.

They're -1's. The no-dash wasn't +P rated, -1 added the +P rating and the -2 added the lock. PS someone buy my 642 in the classifieds thread.

Yeah, 642s without the lock are easily found right now.

Honestly though? the lock doesn't offend me one way or another.

What do you mean cut for moonclips?

Tomorrow morning I am going up to pick out a Model 66 for myself. Any other goon want one?

Maybe for 9x19? Would a cylinder cut for moonclips still be able to use rimmed ammo (ie, no headspace issues)?

I'd love a revolver that could fire 9x19 but that was the M940. As far as I know, 442/642s can't fire 9x19mm.

As for holding a Model 66...don't know, i was going to let goons have them at cost....so not really looking to do a hold. I know Smiths are popular and people seem to think $500 is a decent price for a 19/66 in nice shape.

Just PM me ok?

That's strange. Are there any other differences then? I have a -1 from the '90s before they started making guns with locks and a -1 from after they made -2's with locks, so I know they made some -1's after -2's. Maybe they had frames already marked with -2 and then they decided not to put locks on those?

I'm in a quandary, fellow gun enthusiasts.

I have a Glock 23 and SIG P229 as home defense and CCW weapons. However, my wife is not an experienced shooter and cannot reliably engage a round in either of them. Also the recoil from the .40S&W and .357SIG is too much for her to handle comfortably.

What I'm looking for is a reliable, CCW-able, simple gun that she is comfortable with. She has small hands (like me) and limited handgun experience. After many rounds shooting with her, I was leaning towards a .357 and working her up with .38SPC rounds. However, after shooting extensively with a Ruger .327 Federal, with her, I am sold on it as a round.

I'm strongly leaning towards the SP101 in .327 Fed as it's small enough to carry and she can shoot it all day. Is there any other DA revolver in .327 I should consider before just getting this one?

DJExile
Jun 27, 2007

The SP101 is a nice revolver, but it's a brick shithouse of a gun for only 5 rounds.

To be sure, I love the hell out of mine, but if she wants it for carry, bear in mind that it's a plenty hefty gun.

E: If you want soemthing smaller, the Ruger LCR handles .38spl loads without much of a problem, and there's plenty of small S&Ws that would fit the bill as well. I don't know of any that would shoot .327 offhand though.

Holds six in .327 fed (which is a good round and the Ruger is a good platform for it) but yeah it's still a heavy-rear end gun for its size.

The SP101 is a great open carry gun, but it is a bit heavy for concealed carry.

Have a look at the S&W J-Frames: http://www.gunblast.com/SW-632CCP.htm

Just have her practice with .32S&W, she should be able to shoot that all day, and then for self defense load wit with .327 fed mag. The J-Frame is a much better concealed carry gun then the SP101 in my opinion, being smaller and lighter. I love my SP101, but I still carry a J-Frame.

Well, they don't exist anymore, mostly due to the fact that SAC doesn't exist anymore, but they were definitely a thing. Two things are particularly noteworthy about the Elite Guard...they were the ones that were first to wear the blue beret that is what all AF cops wear now, and (more relevant to this thread) they were the first AF personnel to be issued Model 15s instead of 1911s.

I thought I still had the factory fired case around here somewhere but I can't track it down. It is definitely new production though, I want to say it was 2009 or 2010. My understanding is that S&W has eased up on their "put a lock in everything" policy and are producing new production DAO guns without the lock, I don't know if they intend to start producing other new models without but they do make at least the 442 and 642. The pro models also have no lock and are cut for moon clips.

Yeah I know, two of the three no-lock 642's I had were made in ~2008, but they're marked -1, which is why I was guessing that S&W started using frames marked -2 at some later date.
