I might just be projecting, but my cat seems so bored and sad lately. He's an eight year-old weird runt and just moved in with me in June after staying with my ex for a bit while I got settled in my own place post-breakup. I think my ex was a bit more actively physically affectionate with cat but cat is obviously bonded to me on at least some foundational level because I adopted him and have known him his entire lil cat life and love him very much. I think in contrast my style of affection with him is pretty low-key, i.e., I'll have him sit on me while I watch TV or read and we play together every night before dinner, but things operate at a pretty chill wavelength. I got him a window shelf but he won't jump up there himself. He's not a height-loving cat, prefers to be under stuff. He loves to look outside though, so a bit of a catch 22. Old place had a sliding glass door that he could could just sit on the rug and look out on and feel a fresh breeze, but my place has windows that are a bit high and they actually don't open fully (don't ask!!!!!). So all he can do is stick his face in the bottom two inches if he ever actually goes near one of the windows. He loves to chase stuff like dancers and feathers, but only one that actively seems to be interesting to him right now. I got him an automatic feather chaser thing that he just watches but doesn't play with. The only thing I've gotten him lately and had success with is a wool cat cave and he LOVES IT but it isn't exactly stimulating. I wonder if I should try getting him a kinda short cat tree? And maybe change my affection style somehow? I wish I could get a second cat because I think he'd love that, but I'm not able to.

Who wants to help me make a decision — I have Healthy Paws insurance for my cat right now, I pay $40/mo for 80% unlimited reimbursement after a $250 deductible and it covers nothing preventative at all, or dental! But if he ever gets sick then it'll cover 80%. I keep getting Instagram ads for Wagmo, which is significantly cheaper and basically the opposite of the Healthy Paws plan. It covers everything wellness-related and preventative. My cat is pretty healthy. WHAT TO DO? Cat insurance is fraught.

just want to post to lament how much it sucks to have a sick cat when you are a single anxious person! thankfully my cat finally got a diagnosis from an internal medicine specialist yesterday, needs a pancreatic cyst to be drained and/or removed. my poor little guy. i have to pill him every day now too which is just nerve wracking for both of us. but thankful he got his diagnosis and we can move forward

my cat is having his pancreatic cyst drained tomorrow morning and i am mostly just scared to give him this giant 50mg pill of Gabapentin 90 mins before the car ride. can someone just reassure me that my cat isn’t going to choke to death on the pill if i gently caress up giving it to him? i’ve gotten pretty good at pilling him in the past week but only with way smaller pills!!! i love you all and all your cats

my cat’s pancreatic cyst refilled which they tried to stress was a high possibility but it still sucks. he’s going back on monday but has been having these vomiting episodes that are so frightening and lovely and i’m powerless to help him of course they always happen late at night too just to heighten the anxiety experience. poor guy. we’re both so stressed out oy vey

it’s really shocking how adept i’ve become at giving my cat pills. i remember a few months ago it was sooo stressful, now i’m like “c’mere butthead.” also shocking is how equally adept my cat has become at not wanting to take pills my 10 y/o cat randomly developed pancreatitis in august that took forever to get diagnosed. he’s been left with a big ol cyst that isn’t responding to repeated drainings so he’s getting it removed on jan 11. collecting good vibes from any cats and their humans until and after that !!

speaking of my cat, he's finally going to get surgery tomorrow, where they'll take some tissue (i forget what it's called) and use it to pack his spontaneous pancreatic cyst. apparently this controls the fluid buildup by absorbing it. he's had this cyst since august and had it drained like five times, so hopefully this will give him some relief! that said of course i am nervous. they said i have the option of leaving him there overnight so that i can "get some sleep," but he'll be unattended, which i don't think i have the heart to do. so i guess i'm taking him home tomorrow evening and will be so nervous all night to be alone with him! please send us both good vibes. tax:

currently having intense panic attacks over being alone with my post-abdominal-surgical cat. it went well but i’m really bad at dealing with stuff like this alone. he’s hosed up obviously. and of course, covid makes it fun bc i can’t have any friends come over and spend the night with me or anything. anyone have any advice or words of comfort for a nervous cat guardian goon?

yeah i think there's just too many vets in my cat's kitchen — he has his home base vet, who referred him to an internal medicine vet, who had to refer him to a surgeon. and all those people come along with their office staff, so it's a lot. some of them are like "eh he's fine," and others are like "monitor him very closely" and when i ask for what, the answers are so amorphous. thus the nature of cats i guess. anyway he seems to be doing a bit better today. on tuesday they gave him an appetite stimulant that he turned out to be extremely sensitive to, so he just screamed and screamed all night. that was fun. now he just stares off into space all day.

truly amazing that my cat who had abdominal surgery on monday is already mad at me for being trapped in a room all day. and acting bored af. i wish i had that resiliency. he's almost 11 too! thanks for all the support cat goons.

just want to come into this thread and scream and scream because apparently my cat's omentalization of his pancreatic pseudocyst hasn't... worked? he was doing really really well (a week post-op) and then all of a sudden started getting the same symptoms he had before. his vet specialist sucks. i'm pissed and upset and so stressed. so today he has to go to his local vet for fluids and then tomorrow back to the specialty vet an hour away. they're all bitches, i wish he could see his local vet for all this

so apparently my cat's surgery to omentalize his psuedocyst didn't work. i feel like poo poo. they're gonna try him on steroids to see if that reduces inflammation. with the caveat that because he's not quite 14 days post-op (he's 9), his biopsy sites can open up and release his intestinal contents into his body and he could go into septic shock and die! cool! i am so unhappy

update on my cat and his pancreatic pseudocyst + the surgery for it that didn't work(!): it seems as though my cat is finally on the mend! i'd never have believed it a few months ago. he'd been sick since last fall, and after all the treatments and surgery and meds, his specialist was really NOT optimistic. i think she didn't want to give me too much hope. but Dewey seems to be really happy lately, no vomiting for two weeks and he's gaining weight. the only downside is i have to give him THREE PILLS PER DAY. if you had told me at the beginning of all this that i'd acclimate to giving my cat three giant pills a day ... i remember having near-panic attacks over giving him one teeny tiny pill last fall. anyway if i can do it, anyone can. thanks for all the well wishes for my lil man, he has another visit this wednesday and hopefully all good news !!!

gd does anyone have any thoughts/advice on cross-country move with anxious cat? y'all might remember my cat got really sick with pancreatitis last year (doing better now, stable af) but i just got a new job 2,000 miles away. i've been planning on driving with him in the backseat, in a big travel cage. only last night did i think about taking him on a flight, but it seems so awful to shove them under the seat in front of you screaming for 6 hours. also gabapentin is given to my cat whenever he is in the car (the vet treating his pancreas was an hour away) but it seems to have basically no effect. e: he just turned 11 and is way more resilient than i give him credit for, but definitely not a cat who enjoys new experiences or "adventuring" LOL

thanks a bunch for this! really appreciate it. i spoke to his vet and we’re gonna fly, which is both a huge relief and its own new set of terrors, but hopefully goes ok. i bought the most highly reviewed airline carrier and the vet said to just give him double the dose of gabapentin beforehand. it’s gonna be a 2 hour car trip followed by a 4 hour nonstop flight. i’m gonna get him used to a harness too, i have about 3.5 weeks. wish us luck! if anyone is a dick to me at the airport about my probably-screaming and making GBS threads cat i will freak out, both in anger and stress.

anyone have any recs for food for cats who need to be on diet for urinary problems? my kitty flew ok but the stress gave him an obstruction (just our luck, had to drive to the ER in the middle of the night), and the Hill’s c/d I got him seems kinda lovely. he ain’t thrilled about eating it neither

in my cat’s ongoing saga, he got a glucose sensor placed today. he was fine with it all afternoon but is now freaking out about it? anyone ever deal with this? vet made it seem common.

ANIME AKBAR posted:Casca hope she feels better soon! it's a lot of mental effort to go through this stuff, hang in there goon. i've had a similar experience once with a primary vet many years ago for my cat -- vet wouldn't tell me what to do but i decided to go straight to the emergency vet and that was ultimately the right decision. emergency vet was extremely helpful and saved my cat's life! sometimes i think there really is a disconnect between vets. it can def be hard to navigate. also my cat has IBD and so do many others so you'll be in good company there if that's the case! hunt around for a good internist when you get a second, i think that really helps to have in your pocket. my cat's internist was the first one to actually figure out what was wrong with him re: IBD.
