I had it in manual mode. The D-pad thing would move a selection among different function options and then either wheel would adjust the given setting. I'll go back and play with it some more.

I wish the layout was like my 5Dii. The d-pad and wheel is a wacky combo and I like the separate nub that the 5dii has. Overall it is a solid camera, I don't like the plastic body, that is my only real gripe so far. Does anyone know if the 60D sensor is the same as the 7D?

Opinions on 24-70 f2.8L vs. 70-200 f4L IS. Currently have 18-135 f3.5-5.6 kit lens and 50 1.8. Most of my shooting will be car shows or other car-related functions and some outdoorsy landscape shots as well. I'm thinking that since I can usually get pretty close up to what I'm shooting at, the reach of the 200 is unnecessary right now. Will I be limiting myself too much though with only having the 24-70?

DJCobol posted:Opinions on 24-70 f2.8L vs. 70-200 f4L IS. I love the poo poo out of my 24-70, but unless you're shooting full frame, 24mm is not wide enough for car shows. Usually you have to get pretty close to the cars to avoid getting a lot of people in your shot, so you need a decently wide lens or you will be very frustrated. If you're shooting crop I would say the Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 would probably be a better choice.

Should have put it in the 1st post. Shooting with a 60D, no plans of upgrading to FF anytime soon. So basically what you are all saying is just pay attention to the camera gear thread title and do that? Where's my easy button?

What advantage is there shooting in a monochrome picture style? Is it simply convenience?

Yeehaw McKickass posted:What advantage is there shooting in a monochrome picture style? Is it simply convenience? When I do live shows with a bunch of colored lights, sometimes I'll switch it over to monocrome. If you shoot RAW, picture styles just affect the preview image in camera, and do nothing to the final shot. But if you're in a situation with a bunch of colored stage lights, you can flip it to B&W to make sure you can still see face detail pretty well through the color.

Black and white conversion is an art in itself and not something you want to delegate to a 30cent chip in your camera. You can get good results by doing it yourself in Photoshop, Lightroom, Aperture and the like. However, the best tool for B&W conversions hands down is Nik's Silver Efx Pro 2. It's pretty simple to get started with but very powerful if you want it to be. I can't recommend it enough.

While I am sure there are people who shoot monochrome jpegs in camera to make "artsy" black and whites, I shoot in monochrome for the same reasons Anti_Social does, except I use it in pretty much every situation. It's much easier to see if you got the focus right or if the lighting is working in black and white, and if you're shooting RAW like everyone should, you'll still have color pictures to work with when you can see them on a full size monitor. Color is a lot more malleable than things like lighting and focus in processing.

It actually was quite a shock to me when I realized B&W didn't just mean to turn off the saturation, I'm glad I found the ways of proper tuning of a B&W image. You can really bring out the wide range of grays with Lightroom. Ok I'm going to pimp out my 500D/T1i sale one last time here. I just noticed the 60D does 60fps@720. I think I'm gonna have to do some Twixtor slo-mo. edit: holy poo poo, this thing allows you to exposure correct by 3 stops while in Av mode. My 5DII only allows 2 =/ Been a few low light situations where I wanted to underexpose the poo poo out of something to give it the correct look. Maybe trade down to a T1i/T2i (or even a cheap XSi I guess) and keep the 50mm? Just because they're on the lower end of the spectrum doesn't mean they take poo poo pictures, and it might give enough overhead that you can have your cake and eat it too.

Add the safety course and insurance, and that's the cost of most of my photography gear. If I sell all my gear, I can buy a bike and gear straight up without creating a massive credit card debt. I know for a fact I'll get into photography later, and what I might do in the interim is just get one of the nicer $400 P&S (maybe a 4/3 or micro 4/3).

Yeah now that you mention it I think I can see the viewfinder better without the eyecup. I wear glasses so the eyecup just keeps my eyeball that much farther from the viewfinder. This is a totally bitchin' camera On another note, I found it very interesting that the 'AC adapter' is actualy a DC adapter that you plug into an AC adapter powersupply. Can you plug the DC adapter (the part that goes into the battery compartment) into an external battery? I have a ton of 11.1v lipo packs for my rc cars.

If you can get contacts, try them (I tried them in high school and failed miserably, tried them again at 24 and boom, no problems). I lost my glasses like a year or two ago and never replaced them (vision's not that bad) and got contacts for when I'm shooting or driving at night. It's such a night-and-day convenience issue with camera viewfinders, don't think I'll ever go back to shooting with glasses.

Question for UK goons really, how much £££s should a relatively new 450d with kit lens, 50mm f/1.8, polarizer, mini tripod, cleaning kit and lowepro altus 140 bag come to? Would you say £400 is a reasonable price for all that?

The 450D & the 50 1.8 are about the only two things in that list that are worth anything. That bag is about as craptacular as you can find, a mini-tripod is downright worthlesss for a SLR and my money is on that polarizer being some bargain basement crap. That said, if the deal is good on the rest, go for it. I would say that off a quick e-bay search, £350 is about the limit for a reasonable 'deal' price. £400 ($650) is getting steep for a 2 year old entry camera with basic prime lens.
