I'm not running in VFF's anymore. VFF's are keeping my feet too soft and I want some good calluses. I ran 4 miles barefoot today on a trail consisting of asphalt, a wooden boardwalk, and a small gravel area, and it wasn't too bad. There were bloody toe prints in the parking lot though.

My VFFs are starting to smell. I washed them and that helped a bit, but it still smells faintly of feet. I tried the freezer trick overnight, but that also didn't do much. The fit is pretty snug so I'm not sure I could manage to wear those injini socks. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I'm not sure I posted the recommended Vibram washing method in this thread but if so, here it is again. Get a 1+ gallon bucket and for every gallon of water that is used to submerge the shoes entirely use 2-3 cups vinegar. Drop them in there and let th soak for a few hours. Then pull them out and throw them in the washing machine for a regular cycle and air dry. The vinegar kills the odor and bacteria, while the washing machine kills the vinegar smell. Depending on wear this should keep them not totally stinky for a few weeks. Bonus power points if you drink the vinegar solution after the soak.

Just posting to say: walking on snow in VFFs is loving GLORIOUS. Today isn't a running day for me, but after walking to shops in them just now, I am going for a run in a little bit. It hasn't snowed here in any proper capacity for ages, so I'm taking advantage of this! My feet crave different sensations, and this is beautiful, fresh, uncompacted snow. In Classics and Injinjis, my feet are a little cold, but not too bad. Running should keep the blood pumping anyway. Plus, the looks of confusion on people's faces when they see barefoot prints in the snow makes it all worthwhile. EDIT: Well, I ran half of my run in VFFs... and I ran the other half totally barefoot. Pretty awesome.

I just got a pair of KSOs and I went directly to the gym in them. Phenomenal work out! My feet were so planted to the ground during squats and it felt like I had no shoes on! Best shoes ever.

Best shoes ever. This is my favorite part about VFF's. I feel like I can concentrate so much more easily on my squat/deadlift form when I can feel the ground and how my feet are pressing against it. Also, my wimpy wimpy ankles don't hurt because of heel padding making my standing surface uneven.

Well last night's fresh snow was amazing, but today's 2ft of snow on top of slush and ice is not so cool when wearing Classics. PROBLEM: Classics not suitable SOLUTION: Buy Treks The folks at GSS Gear rock, by the way, and I recommend them highly! ![]() Now the painful wait begins again...

While going through the snow in my KSO's is awesome, I'm discovering that the top frozen crust is ridiculously sharp when it makes contact with my ankles

I asked about this over on BirthdayShoes. I know Vibram recommend you size down like with regular KSOs, but a lot of people seem to wear the same size as their Classics. I seem to have a high instep and a wide foot, so the advice was to go with the same size. I hope they were right!

I've looked at a couple of sizing charts, and I keep seeing two different answers. Some charts show European 46 as U.S. size 12, others show it as 12.5-13. Is a European size 46 (for VFF Classics) the same as a U.S. size 12?
|
| # ? Feb 26, 2010 04:36 |

Dunno if this helps, but I wear a US size 12-12.5, depending on the shoe. In KSOs, I wear a 46, and in Treks, I (now) wear a 47. I had started with 46s in my first pair of Treks, but they wound up causing problems on one foot.

I'm wearing sz 13 Nikes right now and my KSOs are 45 so you really have to try them on to figure out which are best for you. Mind you I don't think I could wear socks in mine though in turn I barely notice I'm wearing them due to them fitting perfectly.

Thanks for the sizing advice. They arrived today, and I can't quite tell if these fit or not (Size 12 US normally, size 46 Euro VFFs). They're really comfortable through the arch, and the heel feels right, but my toes are right up against the end of the toe pockets. I guess I can't tell if they're supposed to be ultra form-fitting, or if I need to go up a notch in size (or I have long toes). I'll run in them a few times and see how it goes.

Oddly enough my current pair were the opposite. They felt, as you described, "right on the edge" (especially on the bigger toes) but after two weeks of running and going to the gym they feel like my best fitting vibrams so far. So I guess the moral of the story is this: There is no magical sizing rule or guideline with Vibram Fivefingers. Everyone is going to have a different experience. We can offer as much help and guidelines as you want, but your best bet is to go to a store and try on as many pairs as you can. Preferably in both men's and women's sizes. If this isn't an option for you (i.e. you ordered the shoes online) then if the shoes don't feel like they're going to be an issue yet, instead of worrying about whether you should change sizes, just try not to think about it for a while and wear them around. Most likely you'll find that after a few days your feel will have adjusted to the shoes and you'll save yourself the hassle of reshipping your order back.

There was a comment on birthdayshoes that the change in foot strike can tighten the arch, actually reducing a persons foot size. It makes shoes like this super tricky, and why there are so many restrictions on sizing.

I think it was not so much the change in foot strike as more the building of foot strength which tightened the arch.

Just got a pair of KSO's... took forever to track down a pair! It's such an odd feeling being able to feel everything beneath your feet... I commented to my gf that I can feel the cracks between sidewalk tiles. It'll take a bit of getting used-to having my toes spread out to fit into the toe pockets though, they got a little bit sore being in the toe pockets after a couple of hours. Also screw this injiji socks noise... so expensive! If you have a Daiso (japanese dollar store) nearby, check it out, because they have toe socks there. At least, there were at the Daiso in Richmond, BC. I know there is a Daiso in Seattle as well, but I'm not entirely sure whether they have socks as well. The socks there cost me $2 a pair!

Man I was sore pretty bad for a whole week after a good long 3+ mile run in my KSOs. Calves were killing me. Just recently covered and did another quick 2 mile ish run and felt fine. Guess it's just all about the conditioning, heh. Looking forward to the day when I can run 10+ miles in them with a fast pace/stride. I wish my huge 2nd toe didn't mess up sizing so much. It really puts pressure on it but once I get moving it's fine. I also find myself tip-toeing around in normal shoes and hardly ever heel striking.
