I'm fostering a dog on behalf of a coworker, and I have no idea WTF it is. His shelter paperwork said collie/great pyrenees mix, but I'm not so sure. Part collie definitely but I don't think I agree with the great pyrenees part. Size comparison: Max (the ACD) is 40 pounds for reference. (the crate in the background is the one he came with. There's no way he can fit in that thing.) Thoughts?

His paws are ENORMOUS so I have a feeling he's going to get a lot bigger and fill out, which is why I think he's mixed with something big in addition to possibly a terrier, but I don't think great pyrenees is it. Here's another shot: I'm in semi-rural Texas so farm dog mixes are pretty prevalent. (edit: if anyone in Texas wants him he's up for adoption)

Instant Jellyfish posted:Do you squish his floppy neck flab? Major has such squishable neck flab Is the neck flub an ACD thing? Max has a lot of excess neck skin, we keep telling him his extra stretchy neck is because he was a bad puppy and his mommy had to keep carrying him around He's got two full handfuls of neck flub with some left over. It's fun to play with.

Speaking of ACD mutts, I'm trying to figure out what other random genes are floating around in Pistol. His old owner says he's half ACD and half mini Australian Shepherd but I'm kind of failing to see the Australian Shepherd part. He definitely looks mostly ACD but there's something else in there. Do Australian Shepherds have spotted skin? I noticed Pistol has spots where they shaved him at the vet and his paw pads are spotted. I'm assuming his freckles will turn him the same color as Max eventually. Thoughts?

Interesting. Can ACDs have floppy ears like that too? The floppy ears are mostly what are making me wonder what else he's mixed with.

The more I interact with Pistol the more I'm thinking something hound-ish is a distinct possibility. He must Sniff All The Things on walks and will do a combo howl and ACD yodel (but also has the high pitched ACD voice so it is the most pathetic thing. His whines warble like an opera singer. I should try to record it sometime). Maybe his Christmas present will be a DNA test.

He does sleep a lot when he's not playing with Max or going for walks. His facial expression is a lot less intense than Max's if that's what you mean (more of an "oh hi there" than "are you where you're supposed to be?"). He's also physically a lot softer. His tongue is so soft and so is his hair. He's got a scruffy tuft of hair around his neck and shoulders but the rest of him is silky smooth. His personality isn't very ACD-like either, he doesn't DEMAND playtime like Max does. He'll play with me if I want but he doesn't come up to me and start gnawing on my arm till I start playing with him. He'd rather snuggle on the couch than play. In fact he hasn't mouthed me at all. Clearly not a true landshark.

Pistol goes to the vet for his puppy booster shots in a couple weeks, while I'm there I think I'm going to ask his vet if those tests would even be worth doing. I didn't particularly care what Charlie was because he was clearly a mutt with several different dogs mixed together, but I was told Pistol was an ACD/mini Aussie mix but he's obviously not and it's slowly driving me nuts trying to figure out what the other half is.

My friend found a stray doggy outside her house. Any idea what he might be? She says shiba mix, I say husky mix. I think he's around 50 pounds. I keep telling her to name him Tater. He just looks like a Tater. He's up for adoption if anyone in the central Texas/DFW area wants him.

Under 30 pounds is pretty small for a cattledog though, Max is on the small side of cattledogs and he's a solid 40 pounds. Pistol's 37 pounds but he's still filling out. She does look like she could be mixed with some sort of terrier. There is such a thing as a miniature cattledog, but the odds of finding one of those roaming about as a stray are much lower than a cattledog/terrier mutt.

I didn't know mini cattledogs were a thing till recently. I took my regular sized cattledog to the vet and they took him back to do some bloodworm, and then the vet tech came back in with a mini cattledog and told me they'd stuck him in a shrink ray

Miko definitely has a herding dog face. I'd believe some sort of border collie mutt.

I'd call that a boxer/pit. It has a very pitty head.

All I see is beagle. I have no idea where they're getting the catahoula idea from, usually catahoula mixes are spotty.

My dog was also a little hesitant with the leash when I first got him, it only took him a week or two to get over it. He'd never worn a collar or been on a leash before so it was more of a "wtf is this" than fear.

I have an ACD and and ACD/Aussie mix. The ACD is definitely nippy, but the mix is not at all. I've even tried to get the ACD/Aussie mix to playfully bite me and he staunchly refuses. It really depends on what mix of genes your particular dog ends up getting. Edit: if you're looking for a dog with a specific set of traits getting a mutt is probably not the way to go. There are way too many variables and unknowns in mutts. You're probably better off getting a purebred dog from a breeder or a breed-specific rescue. AlphaDog posted:Any advice on dalmations, blue heelers, and socialising cats and dogs would be appreciated (or direct me to a better thread!). I've introduced dogs and cats several times, but never a medium sized younger dog to an older cat, so I'm kinda nervous about the whole thing like I always am when I need to do this. Heeler dogs are the best dogs (I am admittedly biased because I have two). They can get nippy, so if you don't want to be chewed on you should nip that in the bud if it starts. They also like routines, one of mine gets all huffy if we don't feed him by 6:30 AM and starts barking at us if he doesn't have dinner in his food bowl at 5:30 sharp. I haven't slept in past 6:30 in four years. Don't know too much about dalmatians, but they're one of those breeds where if you get a well bred one they're awesome dogs but some are compete nutcases. The ones I do know (4 of them) do not like other dogs in varying degrees from "ugh go away" to "I'm gonna eat you", I don't know if that's a dalmatian thing or those particular dogs.
