When I've paid for overnight/Saturday deliver and the package hasn't made it on time, I've always asked Amazon to refund the shipping charge and they always have. Always = the two times it's happened to me.

Yeah, I'm going to do that tomorrow, presumably when I get the stuff in hand.

I do have an SD card I can steal from the RX100 to use in the interim, though.

I did get the grip and one 32 GB SD card today, but the replacement second memory card (I ordered two 32 GB cards) was still a 16 GB. I specifically wrote that they sent the wrong card and why it was wrong, but they just re-sent the same thing. At this point I'd rather just keep the two 16 GB cards since they're both of the fast variety, just smaller sizes.

I did play with the 99 last night and I find the image stabilizer to be a lot better than the 700's. Not having a flipping mirror helps at slower shutter speeds, I'm sure. ISO 3200 is clean as a whistle whereas I would never dare to use 3200 on the 700 unless I had no other choice.

You're going to love the camera. It's basically the best of the a700/a850/a900 interface, mixed with the a580's high ISO quality and the SLT autofocus capabilities. I wish they kept the metering selector switch, but I can get by wiith how it is now. My favorite feature is actually the revised Quick-Navi menu, which I feel improves on the a700/a850/a900's in terms of data displayed while keeping the fast interface.

I'm honestly considering the feasibility of picking up a second a99 to take advantage of this new deal. Given that the only lasting issue with the a850 is the broken PC sync socket, I can easily recoup my costs there. I think I'm going to have a pretty big firesale coming up. At a glance:
  • a77
  • KM 17-35mm f/2.8-4
  • Sony 135mm f/2.8 STF
  • Minolta 35-105mm f/3.5-4.5 MinO (physically ugly, optically fine)
  • Minolta 35-105mm f/3.5-4.5 RS
  • either the Minolta 28-135mm f/4-4.5 ~or~ Minolta 24-50mm f/4 (probably the 24-50)
  • Minolta FA-HS1AM minolta->ISO hot shoe adapter
  • 3rd party grip for a850 (even if I don't sell the a850)
  • Pentacon 135mm f/2.8 w/ m42->alpha adapter

I'm tempted to make a new Sony DSLR/SLT thread. It would be of the quality level of the My First DSLR thread, though not necessarily that long (My First DSLR is 13 pages in Word). Comments, concerns? Horrible idea, or best idea ever?

What would you like to see in a Sony thread that would make it more than me and/or Kefkafloyd posting a whole lot?

What's the difference between starting a new one and updating the OP of this one? Since it does seem pretty dated. Personally I'd like to see more lens discussion.

Zygar has posted once in the past year. I mean, I guess I could work with a mod to write a new OP and have them just replace this thread's OP with it?

Oh My Science

The OP is really outdated and doesn't represent the current Sony bodies or lenses very well (at all), I would love to see an updated OP or new thread.

Yeah, I vote for a new thread. Like the Mazda thread in AI this is always going to be sort of slow but I think it's time to refocus.

Bob, if you're down to write a new OP I support you making a new thread.

Edit: I just placed an order for a SLT-A57K. $500 was just too tempting of a price, and I don't like that the new A58 doesn't have 1080/60P so I don't see a point in paying $100 more for it.

Pretty much. It'll take me some time to write, think, and tweak it - so don't expect anything soon.

The best things always take time.

Meanwhile I've gotten an a77. Dual controls dials and the joystick?
The rear wheel especially for shutter speed/exposure compensation, makes everything faster. The joystick isn't too fun to drive menus with, it works much better with Zone AF, which I don't mind at all.

My for sale post on Dyxum for the a700+grip and the 17-50.

http://www.dyxum.com/dforum/fs-a700...topic97263.html

The F58, even in its banged up state, is already sold.

You can get an a700 with grip and a whole bunch of other stuff for $500. Or a Tamron 17-50 for $300. These things need a good home (and my wallet needs the help).

$500 for a gripped a700 is a great deal. I cut my teeth on an a700 about five years ago, and it's still going stong in the possession of one of my friends. If you're looking to get into the mount and don't care about live view or video, this is a good way to do it.

I haven't checked prices on them recently, but probably $300 inclusive of PayPal and USPS priority shipping? If prices on these have tanked recently, let me know and we'll figure out a fair price. I bought it last summer off KEH in EX condition; some of the silk screening on the barrel has rubbed off, but the glass and mechanics are in good shape. I'll get pics to you in the next couple of days.

Yeah, I would definitely be interested in this at that price. I hear the corners are bad on full frame though. Any comments?

Corners are bad at 17mm, either step down to f/8 or back off slightly to 18-20mm.

Edit - my spring cleaning sale is posted over at Dyxum - link. Lots of goodies for sale, check it out!

Still working on the new First Post. Topics will include:

* A Foreword which touches on why brands are less important than composition.
* A brief history of Sony.
* General strengths and weaknesses of the brand.
* What bodies to buy, and why
* Lenses to buy.

Lenses will probably be split into two sections - the budget options, and the "money is no object" options. I'm working on short blurbs after each lens, as opposed to lengthy reviews. For example, it will be stuff like why the KM 28-75 is worth considering over the Zeiss 24-70. I'm not going to reinvent the wheel - I'll just post a short paragraph, and link to any relevant reviews (I'd link to the artaphot.ch comparison of the Minolta 28-135, Minolta 28-70, and Zeiss 24-70 here, but at the moment, artaphot.ch is offline?).

What else should I add?

This could be included in other sections, but something about the difference between a traditional SLR and Sony's SLT bodies.

Yep, well worth $30 no matter what your skill level is.

Also, my a700 and the 17-50 are up on Fleabay and the auctions expire tomorrow.

Good idea, this will get a paragraph.

As for eBay auctions, here is a link to mine. Looks like I'll probably end up losing money on that grip, but oh well, at least someone will get some use out of it. Also, I was a bonehead and forgot to put STF in the title of the STF posting, so that's probably costing me some money as well.

Nothing to add to the OP but I just wanted to say that I bought his book for the a580/a560 and it is indeed great. Holy crap focus check is a cool feature.
Looking forward to a rundown of the KM glass. I go once a year to Lancaster PA and divebomb the fleamarkets in hopes of a score. So far just a 50mm 1.7 and a vivtar 285HV, but each was 5 bucks!
