The winners have been announced and showcased in today's WTF, D&D!? While working on the latest installment of WTF, D&D!? with my good buddy Steve we happened upon a series of random tables in the back of the Rifts Japan book. The supposed purpose of these tables was to randomly generate some sort of Japanese demon called an "Oni." Steve loves random tables and he immediately saw the potential for a fun activity for the forums. The contest is simple. Using a random number generator go through the tables and create a demon, then create a visual rendering of this demon and write a brief history or background (a couple sentences to a couple paragraphs). Serious efforts and the genuinely funny will receive the greatest consideration. Steve and I will then review these entries in an upcoming installment of WTF, D&D!? At that time we will also award prizes and decide on winners.   I will be giving away three autographed copies of my new book, Your Next-Door Neighbor is a Dragon, Steve has sent me his first edition copy of the D&D Monster Manual to give away, and in the bigger-is-better spirit of Rifts, the grand prize includes signed copies of both of my books, a copy of the greatest novel ever written, a $50 Amazon Gift Card, and this:  That's right, a brand new and totally awesome Rifts t-shirt straight from Palladium. Here's mine: 23 = broad, muscular human 5 = boar's head 88 = ratlike nose 19 = red/whatever almond shaped eyes 69 = canine like mouth/teeth 57 = monkey-like, three finger+thumb hands 51 = skeletal, two toed clawed feet 71 = boils and scabs 9 = brown/tan I'm thinking of making this one a woman, it will be wonderfully grotesque. Especially cause of the boils/scabs.

Kusai-Doubutsu  Kusai-Doubutsu is considered a lesser Oni only because he is shunned by all Greater Oni due to his horrible stench. Emitting a scent somewhere between Indian food and burning truck tires perpetually, Kusai-Doubutsu is nearly impossible to approach. His actual bite is more likely to cause bacterial infection than draw blood, however his powerful claws are capable of rending flesh at blinding speeds. Having no contact from other Oni has driven Kusai-Doubutsu insane from loneliness, and his madness has driven him to bloodthirsty attacks against any human nearing him. Since his aroma repels all things spiritual and living, no human ever actually nears him, driving his madness further. He is at any time capable of gating in 10-100 foul gaseous lesser Oni and can direct them to pursue any target, causing intense nausea. Kusai-Doubutsu is a strict vegetarian, despite his desire to destroy living beings. He subsists solely on raw cabbage which he diligently farms himself. Skin Color 29-Light or Dark Red Unfortunately, I couldn't draw a straight line with a ruler and a hundred pencils, but I couldn't pass up how awesome this thread is going to get, so here's my photoshopped submission:  After I colored him, I decided I had to name him Dr. Oniberg, as sad as that is. Obviously, he uses his huge, muscley arms for showing off to the ladies and his tiny, vestigal third arm to hold snacks or possibly claw-friendly sodas. I can't imagine he has a whole lot of mobility with his oddly-shaped legs, but he's probably more used to just posing anyway. I was going to put him in a background, but because he's just kinda standing there, it looked really terrible for each of the five or so that I tried, haha. So there he is, my poor, unthreatening Japanese demon.

He had shed his armor hours ago; in the sweltering heat, anything more than his blade and some water would be too much to bear. Wiping his brow, he noticed soot on his palm, and the air invoked a familiar odor: sulfur. Peering around the corner into a wide cavern, Rokishi finally laid his eyes on the beast. Known as Surbiartoshi, this demon was just what he expected. A mishmash of humanoid and animal features, Surbiartoshi was a powerful oni of legend. Many had fallen to its sharp claws and many tiny teeth. Looking up and down the monster, he sensed no apparent weakness. From the demon's broad, muscular body, up to its wild boar-shaped head, and its not so prominent flat ape nose, thin mouth, and jade-colored bird eyes, to its furry goat legs, nothing suggested Rokishi's task would be simple. Surbiartoshi's jade-tinted skin was as thick as the samurai armor left behind those many hours ago. As the samurai crept forward, the beast's back to him, he raised Yaoi-yuri slowly, gripping it tightly with both hands. With one clean swipe, the blade whistled through the air, piercing deep into the oni's armored flesh. The demon's roar made the cavern tremble, and knocked the hero to his knees. Surbiartoshi turned to face him. "What bids this mortal to become a sacrifice upon the altar of despair?" the demon bellowed. "I have come to avenge my ravished sister, my devoured parents, and the remains of MY GIRLFRIEND!" Rokishi glared up into the eyes of the emotionless demon. Surbiartoshi raised its arms above its head, claws glistening with the blood of an unseen, previous victim, flicking its tiny snakelike tongue into the face of the samurai, tasting his sweat. Then suddenly, before any normal being could detect the movement, Rokishi was held aloft in the air, suspended by two monstrous arms, and three claws each, piercing deep into his chest. Slowly, the beast began to devour the warrior alive, tearing off strips of skin with its tiny teeth. His blood forming a glistening pool on the blackened ground below him, Rokishi cried in despair. He would never avenge his loved ones, and instead would join them in the realm of death as yet another victim of the oni, Surbiartoshi - Surodoi Hebi Saru Tori Inoshishi.

 Dog'on! Snail god of the depths. The hideous beast not quite olde enough to be a Great Old One. His followers are known to frequent tomato gardens and shun salt. Bio: Dog'on is the younger brother of the ancient demon god Dagon. Like his brother, Dog'on has been known to grant favor to cults presenting him with live sacrifice. Unfortunately, Dog'on does not provide a rich harvest of fish, but snails. Thus, he has quickly fallen out of favor among the more selective dark cults in New England. Dog'on is not an Old One like his older brother, or a Young One like their younger brother Dig'in, but is instead part of the loosely grouped pantheon known as Middle Ones. Dog'on has therefore developed some esteem issues over the aeons, and is less likely to horrify and terrorize the mortal world than his siblings. I am not an artist and I am really terrible at drawing. However, I do enjoy a fine spreadsheet. So, I put this one together on OpenOffice Calc that if you CTRL+SHIFT+F9 it, will automatically generate the d100 roll and tell you which thing it corresponds to. The Cadaverous Gastropod loves stealing girls from other beach dwellers, especially from barbarians.

Sometimes it's a sheep, a tortoise or a lion and other times he goes to find human females, whatever his taste is that particular year. His spawn are always horrible, but thankfully rarely survive. It is said that whoever eats the flesh of one of his children will always be able to feel the Nethwelter. All who do lose their minds eventually.

I was tempted to fudge my rolls to get the most "human" option on every trait. Then write up a back ground about how my demon is all emo because he just looks like a normal dude, so nobody takes him seriously and the other demons laugh and call him names. Then I remembered that I have no artistic skill, and can't actually draw a human-looking human.
