I had zero hype going in, and I have to say I hate the song with a passion. Whereas there was a progression from good dance pop to smart songwriting between Fame and Fame Monster, this one just disappoints. It's the sort of thing I'd expect to hear from Cher, or Christina Aguilera. Completely safe, completely generic, and not at all avant garde. Yikes. Hopefully "Judas" is a return to form, because "Born This Way" was abysmal from the ground level up. If anything, the video is a bigger disappointment; instead of going avant garde, the production instead goes to a level of wholesale culture appropriation that would make Hype Williams blush. Pulling "inspiration" from HR Giger, Xanadu, and The Wiz along with some real obvious shoutouts to Madonna make it pretty pathetic.
