nemoulette posted:Noticed a weird problem with my Canon AV-1. With the Vivitar 28mm, it meters somewhat correctly and chooses a shutter speed of around 1/125 at f/8 in the afternoon outside (400 ASA). However, when I slap the Canon 50mm f/1.8 on it, it goes crazy and just wants to shoot at 1/1000 on any aperture in the same light. Any clue? Is it possible that the little peg or tab that tells the body what aperture the lens is at is stuck or broken? If the body thinks the lens is at f/1.8, that would probably explain the issue.

My rig is coming along. I have decided to use Visual Departures "SM-6s". Does anyone know a good source for them? There's only one place in the UK I can find and they are insane money. You know, you might want to look at drum hardware. It's sort of in a similar vein.

Drum? Like the instrument? I dunno if they'd be rated to mega weights like these are though?

I picked up a Nikon D70 yesterday, the first SLR I've had in 13 years. Back then I was using my dad's N6006, shooting in B&W, and developing in my school's darkroom. Obviously things are much different now. What do I need to get started? My current goal is to get better at composition, the only thing I remember is the rule of thirds. Eventually I'd like to get into some automotive photography, I go to a lot of bike meets and eventually, track days. I ordered 'Understanding Exposure' right now. What else should I be looking into? I'm using the kit lens that came with the N6006, but beyond that I have nothing else. An external flash? A bag? Keep in mind I'm on a tight budget. I also posted this in the Nikon thread, if the mods think it's an issue I can fix it.

You can get a Yongnuo manual flash for a pittance off ebay, a white shoot-through brolly for single-digit bucks and a cheap light stand to hold it all up - it'll get you up and running with off-camera lighting, and you can use white foamboard as a reflector for a 'second light'.

As far as cheap camera accessories go, I just completely my first order with LinkDelight and I couldn't be happier. They're like DealExtreme but with more reliable stock. I ordered a battery grip for my D5100, two batteries, an infrared remote and a knockoff version of the R strap for a total of about $60 after shipping. The shipping is pretty slow though, I ordered it on July 19th and just got it today.

Is there a decent guide for getting good casual portraits of people on the street or in other places where you can't set up anything/prepare?

No, not street photography per se. You have a willing participant. I just mean tips for to getting a good portrait when you can't really choose the setting or fix lighting or wardrobe or props or any of that.

Try to avoid direct sunlight (but it can be nice). Watch background elements like a hawk.

Do this by either putting them in the shade or putting the sun behind their head. Look for natural reflectors like white objects (walls are good) that can kick light onto the subject. This will help match the subject exposure with the background exposure.

CarrotFlowers is apparently in a rut, and posted a bit of a whine in the no-advice thread. Rather than put (simpleminded) advice in that thread, I'll put it here. Come up with a small project, the kind of photo-project you can do in one day, or just in an afternoon. Something like shoot a set number of shots (24? 36? 100?), all within 1 km of your home. Or go for a walk in park but don't come home until you've taken 25 shots you'd be willing to put up on Flickr or here or whatever other location where a few people would see it. Or, the ever-popular one-lens restriction. Pick one lens - a nifty fifty is a popular choice, a prime is better than a zoom for this - and shoot with only it, all day. I find shooting film quite different from shooting digital. If you don't have a film camera, get one, and burn a roll or two.

I got into a rut with some hockey shooting and forced myself during one game to only use my 7-14mm and I think my 35mm f/3.5 macro. Basically use typically inappropriate lenses or gear for the situation and see what you can make of it. On the other side of it, jump head first into shooting something totally different. I'll give myself a good kick in the rear end by going to shoot at the botanical gardens or the zoo. Or just some goof-around portraits with friends. It's a good fresh breath of air. I'm going on a trip to Scotland and Ireland in 2 weeks and forced myself not to take my 50-200 or 35-100, which are on my E-5 almost 90% of the time. My film camera is going and I'm setting my schedule to only take that with me a couple days as well so I can get back into thinking my shots through. CarrotFlowers, you take some drat good shots, worlds better than mine. I'm sure you'll get it clicking again. DJExile fucked around with this message at Aug 8, 2012 around 15:39 |

I just discovered that our local NBC News station is using one of my images without consent or compensation for one of their online news stories. Before I send them an e-mail telling them to take it down I just thought I'd check with you guys and make sure there's no journalism loophole that enables them to do this. There isn't, correct?

Is older film being more fragile a big problem? I was so excited about getting my first roll developed, but literally half of the shots were blanked somehow and the edges were all incredibly torn. Or, barring a catastrophic rewinding (possible) does my camera shop staffed by high school kids just suck?

Can anyone give me some guidelines for real estate photography? Like for advertising homes for sale (or possibly apartments). How much does it matter that the focus is commercial rather than artistic? Since the primary goal is to document the house rather than evoke an emotion (although, since it's sales I'm sure that plays a part) are there any ideas or principles I should be aware of that don't normally play a part in photography?

I've got (developed) film strips from like the late 80s that are still in fantastic condition that have literally just been sitting unprotected in the basement. I'd be surprised if a film just fell apart like that, especially one right out of the can.

Correct. They may claim there is a loophole. If they do, they are full of poo poo. If you have it on Flickr, double-check that you didn't inadvertently label it as Creative Commons (this was the default for a long, long time, and Flickr actively discouraged claiming copyright protection if you tried to change your site preferences).

In the e-mail I gave them the option to take it down or pay me for it (I provided an invoice). I'd rather not have to deal with a big battle with them if I don't have to. Maybe if in 24 hours it's still up I'll send them another e-mail that's just a bill.

I'm going on vacation to Nova Scotia for 2 weeks, and I'm hoping all the landscape stuff will pull my head out of my rear end for when I do come back. And, like Reich suggested in the other thread, it will probably help loads to shoot something that I don't have expectations for. I don't want to lower my expectations on my portraiture because I hope to one day be at that level, but I think I just need a quick break from it to refresh. Thanks for the push everyone

Are random drugstore films just cast-offs from normal film producers? Like, is this walgreens film that is "made in Japan" just fuji film? Also, assuming that is correct, is fuji just a bitch to load or what? I haven't managed to correctly load 3/4 rolls the first time.

I'm planning a trip to Zion National Park later this year, and found this very excellent site: http://www.citrusmilo.com/zionguide...slandingpix.cfm I link to his description of the hike to Angels Landing, but there's loads of hikes all very well documented with pictures. The dude is a photographer (I think), and I really like his vivid style. What's he doing to achieve this look? Bumping the clarity slider to the max? Edit: crossposted to the landscape thread, as it might fit better there!

Are all the other frames evenly spaced your camera might just have a small issue in the winding mechanism, my Rolleiflex does this near the end of the roll sometimes.
