Tumblr is fantastic but you really have to spend at least a few weeks getting into it to find a) the blogs that share the stuff that you are into and b) the original photographers creating and posting the stuff that you are into.

We might be fucked, sir.
Fallen Rib
I was making my once-a-blue-moon check of my old university email account and discovered the marketing people at the university where I did my PhD decided they really like one of the photos I submitted to a photography contest last year. I won First Prize ($300) in one of the four cateories, but one of the other, non-winning photos apparently appeals to some folks running a campaign to raise the profile of the University of Saskatchewan.

This picture:
More than meets the eye by Martin Brummell, on Flickr

They edited my photo - it's much lighter, like it's overexposed, and washed-out, with a much more blurred background - for a mockup they sent me, and they want me to provide some more text, talking about the research I was conducting when I shot that flower. I don't mind the edits they did at all, it's clearly an early version but I'm fine with it and the marketing campaign seems OK to me, they're not making untrue claims and I honestly was quite happy at the University of Saskatchewan.

What should I ask for regarding copyright? I assume the university has some basic contract or agreement or something they'll expect me to sign, but I don't speak legaleze very well and I don't want to just give this away. I have just given away photos before, to actual charities (Sierra Club, Canadian Wildlife Federation) or to a journal for a cover image that actually provides non-money benefits to me in that I can put that on my C.V. as a published scientific image. This seems different, because while it's not a for-profit business (those I would absolutely demand payment from, were one ever to approach me) it is a major Canadian university's marketing specialist making this request; presumably they have a budget for this kind of thing. It's possible that by entering this photo in the contest last year I've already renounced most of my rights, but it can't hurt to ask.

Also, they asked for a high-resolution version and I tried to send them a big-rear end TIFF file that the email server hates. Where's a good place to upload this 38mb photo - a dropbox link?

You own the copyright and you license the photo to them for use in specific ways e.g. use in a certain publication, for use in their online marketing etc. It's up to you to specify the limitations on how they can and can't use the image.

Bit of a complex question, I've got a T2i, nifty 50, and Sigma 18-250mm for it that I haven't used but a few times. I've got a kid on the way due in a few months. I'm debating selling the camera since I don't use it now and I doubt I'll use it in the future and just upgrading the cell phones (and their cameras) that my wife and I carry.

I thought I'd get more into photography, and while I know much more now than when I started I just don't get into the *work* of it all with the DSLR. The downloading, the processing, the filtering, etc. to produce a nice set of photos. I think I'd rather snap a bunch and let the cloud sort it out.

We've been having a back and forth about getting a 4/3rds sized camera or a nice P&S instead, but we keep coming back to the idea of who wants to sort through it or carry it when we have our phones on us already. Is it that much better of a photograph when we are the ones taking it in the first place?

So, question is, does anyone think I could get any money for a set like that? Or is all the value in the lenses and therefor I should just hold on to everything for a while and see if I ever want to fool with it again?

Or does someone want to talk me into selling the kit and getting an a5100 or Rx100mk2?

Cell phone cameras work great in good light. Once the light is gone, that's when they go to poo poo. You're also stuck with the wide-ish focal length of the lens with can limit your options, though you could get something like a Olloclip.

Personally, with a kid on the way, I'd suggest having a good camera. Your child is only going to be young once and this is your only chance to make great high quality photos of them. I think iPhone/smartphone images can be pretty decent, but why gamble? Especially if you want to make decent sized prints. These photos are going to be important to not just you, but your family and your child for the rest of their lives and probably beyond that.

As far as what you need, I don't see anything wrong with switching to mirrorless. In fact if I didn't already shoot full frame , I would probably be shooting on a mirrorless system today. Many pros are switching as well.

If you're really confident that you will never want to carry around camera gear (I kind of doubt you'll feel that way with a new born) then a Rx100 is a good choice. IMO anything with a smaller sensor isn't too much better than a smartphone and anything larger that's not pants pocketable, you may as well get a mirrorless system (though there area few fixed lens cameras with big sensors that are worth it).

Lastly, it sounds like you're not really interested in the processing/editing side of things. If that's the case I'd highly suggest you get a camera that has wifi. With wifi you'll be able to send the photos straight to your phone for posting on social media. I have it on my Canon 6D and I didn't think much of the feature before I started using it. After playing with it, it's nice to be able to send photos straight to my phone/ipad, edit them in an app real quick if I want to, and post them up on Facebook/whatever. You'll still want to dump the photos on the computer for safe keeping, but if you just want to shoot and share, wifi is great.

Use your DSLR, with the fast lens you have, set the camera to save highest level jpegs, be happy. With a kid, keep the DSLR. When you realize it's great to have good photos, and easy, too, then get a smaller, lighter mirrorless.

Heed my words and become a master of the Heart (of Thorns).
I had my full frame and lenses long before i got my daughter, and intend to keep them after getting her, but those 5 best photos i have of her are alone worth the value of all my camera gear. (she is 6 months old) If the only photos i ever took with all my camera gear was those 5 photos it would still be worth it.
There is no way i would be able to get those photos with a cell phone, for several reasons.
Light, composition, unpredictability of babies (you need to take a ton of photos and hope you get a few where the baby is smiling, looking in the correct direction, not drooling, "holding a pose", etc all at the same time) You won't get the shutter speed, photos per second and reaction time needed with a cell phone.

I wanted "studio quality photos". If you just want "photos" then a cell phone is good enough. I have plenty of such photos of my daughter as well, but none of them have been printed and hung on a wall.

yep you definitely should, popular ones are #photographers on tumblr and #original photographers. People do search by hash tags as it is a good way to find new photographers that you like. The hit/miss ratio is like 1:99 but that's still probably better than flickr.

maybe camera having isn't for you then

if you want to stick it out with your camera I recommend a body with wifi so you can dump the pictures to the cloud without involving a computer. I also recommend being more selective about the pictures you take so that there's less work to look through them and find the good ones. Being more selective while shooting isn't really the way to go with babies since they are unpredictable as mentioned by another poster but it will help you out with other subjects.

when you have your baby find some spot in your house that gets decent natural light, preferably indirect light like light through a white curtain or blind or light that's reflected into your window (you can put a white sheet over your window if all you've got is direct sunlight), then put your kid down on the floor in that light (maybe put down a blanket first) and take some pictures with your 50mm lens at f/2.8 or so. Make sure you put the focus point on the kid's eye and try some different angles. These pictures will beat the piss out of what your phone will take even without editing and someone will ask you how you did it as if you are a wizard.

Well, I don't think photography is going to be my next or current hobby. I can't have all the hobbies, and I've given this one a fair shake.

I appreciate the advice, I think I'm going to list all my canon gear in SA mart this weekend and try and sell it as a bundle. Then use those funds to get something like a Sony a5100 with the kit lens.

That would let me keep an APS-C sensor, have a camera with WiFi, and somewhat decent kit lens. Then I'd still have a "real" camera, a newer camera, and be very little $$ out of pocket. Plus the total package would be smaller so maybe it would be more likely to travel.

If not I'll sell it too in a few years.

That RX10 looks baller but doesn't look smaller which is a killer feature for me.

Not me. Since the boy was born, I'm more likely to haul along the camera. I never regret having it and on the rare occasions I don't have it, I frequently regret its absence. But, yeah, the smaller good cameras are a worthy substitute.

I got a TX20 for jobsite use shortly before they decided to ban all personally owned cameras; that's the water/fire/dust/drop-proof one, and it's pretty excellent to be able to just pocket the thing and not give a poo poo.

Being a P&S I have trouble getting it to take the pictures I think I want, but when I just want a shot of something interesting that's happening right now, it's perfect, and it's a lot quicker than trying to get my cellphone shooting.

The RX10II is a really nice camera, priced to match. It's a shame bridge cameras were garbage for so long, since the FZ1000 and RX10 are legitimately great cameras for amateurs/people that don't want an ILC camera.

If you can deal with the lack of zoom, the RX100 is pretty awesome as well. The II is probably the sweetspot in terms of bang for the buck, but know that while the AF is decent, it will not touch PDAF'd DSLR AF.

Yeah I think it is. I had (still have in a drawer) a Huey Pro and that thing was a piece of poo poo. I don't even think the calibration was right (images seemed redish) and I agree the ambient on it was annoying.

The display is great and I'm glad I have it. My imac is right next to a window and the level of brightness in the room varies wildly through out the day/night. It pretty much stays out of the way and does its job.

Here is the link to the deal: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/859826-REG/X_Rite_CMUNDISCCPP_ColorMunki_Display_and_ColorChecker.html
