Interestingly, there's a CDC report that does talk at least about 'severe physical violence' from intimate partners, in tables 4.7 and 4.8, for which the numbers are less one-sided than one might naively suppose - 2.26 million male victims in the previous 12 months, compared to 3.16 million female victims. All physical violence (as listed in tables 4.1 and 4.2) actually has men slightly ahead, with 5.36 versus 4.74 million. Nothing obviously matches up to the guy's 15ish second figures, though.

Aaron and Melissa Klein, the owners of Sweet Cakes By Melissa, have been ordered to pay $135,000 in damages to a lesbian couple after they refused to bake them a wedding cake in 2013.

The Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industry (BOLI) awarded $60,000 to Laurel Bowman-Cryer and $75,000 in damages to Rachel Bowman-Cryer for “emotional suffering.”

“This case is not about a wedding cake or a marriage,” the final order read. “It is about a business’s refusal to serve someone because of their sexual orientation. Under Oregon law, that is illegal.”

According to the BOLI, the lesbian couple suffered great angst. One of the women “felt depressed and questioned whether there was something inherently wrong with the sexual orientation she was born with.” They said she had “difficulty controlling her emotions and cried a lot.”

A record 93,626,000 Americans 16 or older did not participate in the nation’s labor force in June, as the labor force participation rate dropped to 62.6 percent, a 38-year low, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

In June, according to BLS, the nation’s civilian noninstitutional population, consisting of all people 16 or older who were not in the military or an institution, hit 250,663,000. Of those, 157,037,000 participated in the labor force by either holding a job or actively seeking one.

The 157,037,000 who participated in the labor force equaled only 62.6 percent of the 250,663,000 civilian noninstitutional population, the lowest labor force participation rate seen in 38 years. It hasn’t been this low since October 1977 when the participation rate was 62.4 percent.

Another 93,626,000 did not participate in the labor force. These Americans did not have a job and were not actively trying to find one.

Of the 157,037,000 who did participate in the labor force, 148,739,000 had a job, and 8,299,000 did not have a job were actively seeking one—making them the nation’s unemployed.

Following the influx of illegal immigrant minors from Central America, an official at the federal agency charged with protecting public health describes Barack Obama as “the worst pres we have ever had,” an “amateur” and “Marxist,” according to internal emails obtained by Judicial Watch.

JW got the records as part of an investigation into the Center for Disease Control’s (CDC) activation of an Emergency Operations Center (EOC) to deal with the barrage of illegal alien minors last summer. Tens of thousands of Central Americans came into the United States through the Mexican border and contagious diseases—many considered to be eradicated in the U.S.—became a tremendous concern. The CDC, which operates under the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), responded by opening an emergency facility designed to monitor and coordinate response activities to eminent public health threats.

This special emergency division was created after the 2001 terrorist attacks and has responded to more than 50 public health threats, including hurricanes, food borne disease outbreaks, the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic and the Haiti cholera outbreak. Scientists from across the CDC are brought together to analyze, validate, and efficiently exchange information during a public health emergency and connect with response partners. The EOC also coordinates the deployment of CDC staff and the procurement and management of all equipment and supplies that agency responders may need during their deployment.

It’s a major and costly operation that can stick American taxpayers with a huge tab. That’s why JW launched a probe when the Obama administration took in the illegal immigrants, initially coined Unaccompanied Alien Children (UAC), with open arms last summer. JW has sued the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for planning records involving the border crisis as well as information relating to the solicitation of “on-demand escort services” for the 65,000 UACs that remain in the U.S. Last year JW also reported that the illegal immigrant minors have brought in serious diseases, including swine flu, dengue fever, possibly Ebola virus and tuberculosis.

Hey look, crazy people in the government. Must mean that everyone hates Obama!

Middle and high school students can’t get a Coca-Cola or a candy bar at 13 Seattle public schools, but they can get a taxpayer-funded intrauterine device (IUD) implanted without their parents’ consent.

School-based health clinics in at least 13 Seattle-area public high schools and middle schools offer long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs), including IUDs and hormonal implants, to students in sixth-grade and above at no cost, according to Washington State officials.

LARCs are associated with serious side effects, such as uterine perforation and infection. IUDs, specifically, can also act as abortifacients by preventing the implantation of a fertilized egg.

The state and federally funded contraceptive services are made possible by Take Charge, a Washington State Medicaid program which provides free birth control to adults who are uninsured, lack contraceptive coverage, have an income at or below 260 percent of the Federal Poverty Level — or, in this case, to teens who don’t want their parents to know they’re on birth control.

If you don't involve the parents, then how will the little sluts get punished?

The woman was probably exposed to measles at a medical facility during a measles outbreak this spring, according to the health department. She was at the hospital at the same time as a patient who later developed a rash and was diagnosed with measles. Patients with measles can spread the virus even before showing symptoms.

The woman, who died of pneumonia, had other health conditions and was taking medications that suppressed her immune system, the health department said.

…meanwhile…

The U.S. Government keeps a database of reports called The Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS). The database is available to the public, and there is a search portal the public can use at Medalerts.org.

Searching for a ten year period for deaths reported with measles vaccines, including a few that are no longer in production, resulted in a list of 108 deaths over this period, associated with four different measles vaccines sold in the United States during the past 10 years.

This database reflects only deaths that were reported during the time frame, and therefore probably reflects a much lower number than actual deaths, since most doctors and health authorities believe vaccines are safe, and would not normally attribute a death to a vaccine and actually report it.

Well, anti-vaxxing is the only form of outreach they have, might as well continue it.

A Connecticut mom wanted to snap her No. 2 pencil in half when she sat down to fill out her son’s kindergarten application and came across personal questions about his birth that left her demanding answers instead of filling them out.

The application, which West Hartford School District officials say have been standard for decades, sought information such as whether Cara Paiuk’s delivery was by C-section or not, whether there were other complications and even if her newborn son had gone home with his parents without delay. Paiuk said she talked to other Aiken Elementary moms, and they also were taken aback by the intrusive questioning.

“Most parents I have spoken to are outraged, and then they are almost outraged at themselves, like, ‘Did I fill that out? Did I not even question it?’” Paiuk said.

The school was apparently seeking any information that might indicate children could have developmental problems. Tom Moore, superintendent of West Hartford public schools, said this is the first time the birth-related questions have raised objections. He said he spoke to doctors in attempt to figure out why the question were on the form and whether they had any merit.

And so this week, Mr Collier and his two wives, Victoria and Christine, entered a courthouse in Billings, Montana, and sought an application to legalise the trio’s polygamous union.

“Right now we’re waiting for an answer,” Mr Collier told The Independent. “I have two wives because I love two women and I want my second wife to have the same legal rights and protection as my first.”

He added: “Most people are not us. I am not trying to define what marriage means for anybody else – I am trying to define what marriage means for us.”

I do hope this becomes a trend, if every time one of the conservative justices throws a hyperbole tantrum, its taken as legal precedent to grant more rights.

Christmas annexed Thanksgiving and is marching on Halloween, I'd say so.

It's even more dumb when you realize that it isn't even Christmas itself that people are complaining about. Nobody gives a poo poo if you want to celebrate Christmas but the rampant, disgusting commercialism of the holiday and the fact that Christmas, in the retail world, starts in like...June is getting tiresome. People have been trampled to death over stuff like cheap DVD players. Plus there are a lot of people that become incredibly horrible around the holiday season.

In 2009 the year's pumpkin crop failed massively. I was working grocery at the time and had to endure two months of people screaming at me like I was personally ruining their holiday season because I could not sell them pumpkin. I had no pumpkin. There was none. I couldn't get pumpkin. All the pumpkin we could get we got and we sold it. Now, most people are rational human beings and just go "oh, whatever...what kind of other pie stuff do you have?" because seriously...it isn't a huge deal. Just have some other kind of pie. It's loving pie. Not a huge deal.

But that didn't stop people from accusing me of hording all the pumpkin so I could keep it for myself and sell it on eBay. It didn't stop a woman from demanding to speak to a manager and then demanding that I be fired and forbidden from working grocery anywhere ever again because I didn't sell her any pumpkin (it didn't happen by the way). It didn't stop people from screaming that they "just knew" we had pallets and pallets and pallets of it in the back but were holding off until we could sell it for a higher price (because I guess stores are in the business of not selling things?). A few people even seriously accused me of cleaning all the pumpkin off the shelves and hiding it because...well I don't really understand it...because I just felt like ruining somebody's holiday, I guess?

This was while my coworkers were struggling to get by and some of them just flat out couldn't afford to have holiday celebrations with their own families. People scraping by and barely managing to not starve toil long hours doing heavy lifting so everybody else can have good holidays and that's how they get treated when something goes even slightly wrong. After working ten years between retail and the restaurant world you're goddamned right I hate Christmas. Has nothing to do with the Christian celebration and everything to do with the bullshit that surrounds it. I don't give a poo poo if people want to put up nativity scenes and praise Jesus. But seriously...if you're going to talk about good will toward men, peace and love on Earth, and kindness toward your fellow man then maybe you should actually do those things and not try to ruin somebody's livelihood because the pumpkin ran out. I never met the guy but I'm pretty sure Jesus would be pretty unhappy with the way we celebrate him.

That and randomly along the way. It's more of a holiday season thing at this point and around October pumpkin-flavored everything starts appearing.

Yeah I have terrible, terrible stories about literally every major holiday and even some minor ones. I find it thoroughly baffling how few people realize just how much work goes into making holidays work and that there are people that don't get to have holidays because of it. For the restaurant world Mother's Day was probably the worst. Every restaurant ever just gets absolutely hammered all day, every day ever year. The prep work that goes into it is absolutely massive, everybody works long hours, and the hours are grueling. You'll end up not taking breaks, eating on the run, and just in general having a poo poo day. Even if you yourself are a mother and it's supposed to be your day. Stupid poo poo I saw included a mother being forced to stay 7 hours beyond her printed shift and missing a dinner her family was planning. Which would include getting to see one of her children that lived far away and rarely got to visit. You'd pull absurdly long hours, often 14+. My longest shift (which was still a store record last I heard) was 21 hours.

It also truly baffled me how many times we got calls bitching about how we were closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas. As if none of us had families or holidays. American culture truly treats unskilled labor like filth that deserves no joy.

Speaking of unskilled labor - or rather what people think is unskilled labor - I ran into this article today about why Washington cherry prices were higher this year.

http://www.inlander.com/spokane/cherry-pitfalls/Content?oid=2499695

tl;dr: Prices are up because of visa troubles so workers didn't get to the field in time and early crops. Some idiots would probably ask, 'Why are you giving mezicans jobs when there are plenty of people that would love a job these days?' Well, probably b/c the job isn't as easy as you think it is.

quote:

In 2011, a late apple crop hung ripe from trees at the McDougall & Sons orchard on the date the Wenatchee farm's H-2A worker's visas expired. As the workers filed onto buses, then-Gov. Christine Gregoire swooped in with a solution: prisoners would pick the apples. "That was a nightmare," says Craver. "It just didn't work. The prisoners had no skills."

There's the wrong perception in the public that anyone can do this work," says fourth-generation Clarkston farmer Eric Wilson, who relies on Washington State University students to harvest most of his fruit. "Most of the farm labor jobs we have are skilled jobs; it's not flipping burgers."

I told my friend that was bitching about the prices but I failed to remember than she's one of those 'Obummer hasn't done anything' kind of people. Hopefully, she won't be bitching about the mexicans tomorrow.

You can deny to make certain products, but you cannot deny certain customers. So, the gay couples going to Christian bakers aren't asking those bakers to do anything different than they normally do. They just want a wedding cake like they would serve a wedding cake to a strait couple. However, if a muslim came in and asked for a cake with an ISIS flag, they would be well withing their rights to deny that cake. But if that same muslim came in and asked for a standard wedding cake, they cannot deny him service because of his religion.

That's the difference. Gay couples aren't going to bakers and asking for a special gay cake. They're being denied for who they ARE, not for what they WANT. That's what makes it illegal.

I've seen the Liberal Logic thing about the "Muslim bakery refusing to serve someone" and then there is this, but I'm not exactly sure how it works.

Rule of thumb would be you can't refuse someone service, but you can refuse to make a cake that would result in you endorsing a political position you wouldn't normally.

Of course, it's virtually impossible to prove that you've been denied service because of bigotry unless the bakery outright says it; if they just said "sorry, we're fully booked," there would've been almost no way to prove that it was homophobic. Of course, Klein's the kind of moron who not only blatantly denies service out of homophobia, but also outright doxxed the couple in question, so there we are.

It got posted to the gay marriage thread; I forgot it might not have found it's way over here.

But yeah, Aaron Klein posted the Bowman-Cryer's information on his facebook page, which resulted in them receiving death threats, among other harassment. And because the Kleins' lawyers are equally classy, they argued that it was the Bowman-Cryer's fault that they were getting harassed because they had the gall to bring suit against them for being bigoted shitheels.

quote:

-- Reports of death threats. In testimony Tuesday, Rachel Bowman-Cryer said she and her wife received death threats as media attention and criticism from strangers escalated in the months after the story went national in January 2013.

She said the threats were part of a stream of "hateful, hurtful things" that came after the couple's contact information (home address, phone and email) was posted on Aaron Klein's personal Facebook page. She said she feared for her life and her wife's life.

...

During cross-examination, lawyers for the Kleins suggested that the Bowman-Cryers themselves ignited the media coverage by filing complaints with the state. Their point in doing so was to argue that any pain and suffering sustained by the women was due to their own or others' actions rather than their clients'.

It's pretty simple. If you don't make penis cakes, no one can sue you for not selling them a penis cake. If you sell ordinary white wedding cakes to straight white Christian couples, you can't refuse someone else an ordinary white wedding cake because they're gay or Jewish or race-mixers or whatever. If you actually are in the business of selling penis cakes to straight couples though, then likewise you can't deny a gay couple the same cake.

These questions only arise because a certain type of fundamentalist doesn't believe that love is possible between two people of the same sex or of different races, and concludes that anything other than same-race opposite-sex holy-matrimony missionary loving is done solely to flip God the bird and to spite all Christians, personally. It's all done to take perverse pleasure in watching Christians squirm and lure them into sin. Since the only meaningful distinctions are sin and not-sin, in the eyes of a fundamentalist Christian, an interracial couple asking for a wedding cake is actually asking for a sin cake as part of their ultimate plan to force Christians to make cakes celebrating every pornographic level of licentiousness and hedonism and spiritual degradation imaginable.

Hmm, I wonder what Jefferson said about the Constitution.

Thomas Jefferson posted:

Every constitution, then, and every law, naturally expires at the end of nineteen years. If it be enforced longer, it is an act of force, and not of right. It may be said, that the succeeding generation exercising, in fact, the power of repeal, this leaves them as free as if the constitution or law had been expressly limited to nineteen years only.

My guess is that they equate "access to planned parenthood" with "abortion," and so they're trying to say "hur hurr if your great-grandparents had aborted their kids then you wouldn't have been born you stupid liberal cow" or something to that effect.

If they had access to Planned Parenthood, they would have gotten abortions, which means Chelsea wouldn't have existed, which means she's advocating for her own non-existence.

The right decided that anybody that's pro-choice just loves the idea of murdering babies and wants as many abortions as possible to be performed. They figure that pro-choice is the exact opposite of pro life so obviously all pro-choice people just flat out never have babies and instead just abort literally everything.

Which is why you hear them say stupid poo poo like "bet you're glad your parents were pro-life, yes?" Because it's impossible that a pro-choice person would choose to have a baby, I guess?
