This has been making the rounds on Facebook lately:

quote:

“Entrepreneur’s Credo

I do not choose to be a common man,
It is my right to be uncommon … if I can,
I seek opportunity … not security.
I do not wish to be a kept citizen.
Humbled and dulled by having the
State look after me.
I want to take the calculated risk;
To dream and to build.
To fail and to succeed.
I refuse to barter incentive for a dole;
I prefer the challenges of life
To the guaranteed existence;
The thrill of fulfillment
To the stale calm of Utopia.
I will not trade freedom for beneficence
Nor my dignity for a handout
I will never cower before any master
Nor bend to any threat.
It is my heritage to stand erect.
Proud and unafraid;
To think and act for myself,
To enjoy the benefit of my creations
And to face the world boldly and say:
This, with God’s help, I have done
All this is what it means
To be an Entrepreneur.”
― Thomas Paine, Common Sense

It is invariably accompanied by a remark about how America should not allow the Socialist menace to succeed.

Yes, it is from the same Thomas Paine who advocated a guaranteed minimum income and decried the advent of private ownership of property as denying every man of their natural inheritance, thus advocating everyone person upon reaching the age of 21 should receive a large sum of money from the government. The same Thomas Paine who sided with the French revolutionaries in overthrowing the aristocracy. The same Thomas Paine who advocated a heavily progressive taxation system funding extensive social services.

http://www.gutenberg.org/files/147/147-h/147-h.htm

And the use of the term "entrepreneur" makes it highly suspect that Paine could have written it at all:
http://books.google.com/ngrams/graph?content=entrepreneur&year_start=1700&year_end=2000&corpus=0&smoothing=3

Zoom in on what LOOKS like a likely candidate time period, and you'll find only unrelated texts, mostly in French, and the remaining instances of the term are the name of a ship.

It is a falsely-attributed quotation. Probably deliberately on someone's part, but once these things start, they gain a life of their own. People repeating it use one another's repetition of it as confirmation.

Wow, holy poo poo, I was totally suckered. This thing has such a life of its own that even legit sites attribute it to Common Sense, and it has been ages since I last looked at it. For me, it was easy to attribute to Thomas Paine simply because of his disdain for British nobility. Wow.

Edit: Serves me right for not going to the source and checking immediately.

Even if it was a some what legitimate tactic, wouldn't it make sense to build a wooden fence first, leave it for a week or so and then dump a bunch of corn inside it to lure the pigs in? The idea that you have to condition them to take the corn and then condition them to each fence wall, one step at a time seems ridiculous. Its only written that way in order to be a lovely analogy of "LIBERALS TAKING ARE FREEDOMS!"

It makes even more sense to go to the loving hog store and buy some piglets.

Certainly; pro athletes are definitely making way more than the average person, and I wouldn't argue that.

My only point is that if you compare the average NFL compensation to that of an upper class individual, it's closer than I'd expect. I mean, ~$700K over 3.5 years would be like $100K over 25 years.

Current NFL retirees maintain their health benefits for life (something the older retirees are trying to make retroactive), maintain several forms of disability insurance, most likely had a free ride through college and will have career opportunities open to them that are not open to the typical person beyond their football career. Even at league minimum, it is not difficult for a pro player to exit their career with over a million in net worth while in their 20s, something nearly impossible for others who are not born into a wealthy family.

In order to have it make sense, one would have to argue that the current level of influence from the Federal government is a hindrance to progressive policy at the State level, which is of course absurd.

The best part is that people just like him get up in arms when OTHER states do things, such as Romney's health care in Mass. They crow about states rights, but then get pissed when states actually exercise their rights, because in the end, they just don't want any government to do anything ever.

Also, the best thing about people who argue based on Constitutional purism is that they will vehemently resist any and all efforts to amend the Constitution, even though that was the intent from the very beginning. Once you begin to argue a hypothetical amendment, they will prove that they only argue from the Constitution when it supports their ideology.

Most of the social programs in America are state administered with matching Federal funds. In order to get the funds, the state must meet certain criteria.

The problem is that the guy is not even arguing the actual issue. Of course people should be free to spend as much as they want on 'health care.' The problem is that we spend more, but get less than other countries. Having the 'freedom' to spend is a red herring, because $1000 of spending in the US gets you less than $1000 of spending in any other first world country, regardless of the source of the money (insurance, private expenditure, NHC, etc.) We spend more per capita on health care in a system that does not provide better results.

And no, Canada's health care system is not imploding, and the onus is on him to prove his positive statements, not for you to disprove them.

No, I don't advocate treating government like a business, it just shows that people who believe in these meaningless sound bites have not thought their positions through.

The DMV is hamstrung by the fact that we must carry around reams of documents in this country rather than having an efficient data warehousing system that allows all of the various pieces of government to communicate efficiently. Once you enter the DMV, if you don't have all 50 documents required to achieve whatever goal you had in mind, then there is really nothing they can do to help, and you standing and yelling at the attendant will not help.

Sorry for the rant, but I loving hate how our government outright rejects the use of technology to make our everyday lives even better.
