Drew Estate. Our tobacco is so good we use it as packing material. No, really. They do. I swear there is more tobacco used in the packing than in the actual cigars.

There was a picture of Jonathan Drew throwing up gang signs in a Cigars International catalogue a few years back where he's dressed like a wigger twice removed--that's when a white guy from the suburbs tries to dress and imitate another white guy from the suburbs who is trying to convince the world he is a hardass black guy from the hood. It was the first time I laid eyes upon his face and I remember seeing it and thinking "That's exactly the kind of douche I suspected was responsible for marrying cigars with patchouli." Every time I open a box of acids at the cigar shop I look for the tiny little hippie who died inside.

But as big of a douche as Mr. Drew is, he doesn't hold a poo poo scented candle to his mentor, Lars Tetens.

quote:

Lars Tetens has always been the leader in the cigar industry, breaking the conventional standards and solidifying the ancient way of making cigars within the world cigar market. Lars’ cigars are made in the true ancient way of cigar making, developed by the original tribes of South America. And Lars spent many years studying with these indigenous tribes to learn the true way of cigar making. The particular process that Lars uses gives you an incredible cigar like nothing else on the market.

This is Lars:

And these are his cigars:

Apparently it's a tradition of the indigenous tribes of South America to pour perfume on their tobacco then hide their cigars in opaque little bags that
conceal the expert craftsmanship of their rollers.

And here's a couch made by Lars:

http://www.sk8nsmoke.com/furniture.html

It can be yours for just $32,000! Lars once slept on my sofa and it increased in value overnight! Lars is truly a miraculous man. But don't take my word for it. What are other people saying about Lars:

quote:

Lars Tetens is a man of so many talents he has been dubbed a contemporary Leonardo Da Vinci by his admirers. From five years old, the crafts and hobbies Lars explored as a child have developed products in a broad range of categories from luxury merchandise to science and technology. Furthermore, he is credited with bringing back the lost, ancient cigar making techniques that date back thousands of years.

Thanks LarsTetens.com!

Also I had a Fuente 8-5-8 with breakfast a couple days ago. It was overpriced for what it was, but it wasn't bad. Probably because I had a large coffee that was at least half Bailey's to go with it. I guess the coffee con leche cigar has a purpose after all.

It's time for another Good Idea/Bad Idea!

Good Idea: Pairing a DPG Blue with a Sam Smith Oatmeal Stout last night.

(Very) Bad Idea: Pairing a Java wafe with a cup of actual coffee this morning.

gently caress you, Jonathan Drew. You make interesting shapes out of tobacco, but they taste like they've been aged in the rear end cracks of hippies.

Better Idea: Smoking an actual cigar while you wait for this huge pdf of comparison prices from major online cigar outlets to finally load.

I don't get no respect!

I wait and wait for the new thread to get started. Then, I go away for a party and come back to find that it's already on page TWO for god's sake and Fishbulb is pushing Gurkhas like he's a major stockholder or something.

Anyway, thanks for the new thread. May it hold up to its long line of predecessors in quality and quantity.

For the guy asking about the Fuente line, the Gran Reserva line is a mild, light flavour line of good smokes. The ones mentioned earlier like the Brevas and Curly Heads were some of my first go to smokes. I soon out grew their mild flavours and ventured out there into the Don Carlos and Hemingway lines which are more robust and stronger in flavour. To this day the Hemingway Short Story is one of my favourite smokes.

The Gran Reserva might be a good starting cigar but you will know when you taste something better that you will not be going back. I have Fuente Gran Reserva Churchhills in my coolerdor that are around 15 years old that I will probably never smoke.

Viva la New Thread!

OH! And if you decide that you don't like Gurkhas after all. Fishbulb is wanting to start the world's largest collection of fine Gurkha cigars. Send them to him.

Its not my fault that Mr. Fuente isn't up to Mr. Drew's level of professionalism and construction perfection. Also they are all way overpriced shitsticks.

To celebrate this thread I am smoking my Ghurka Status (that came in a frosted glass tube packed with tobacco no poo poo) tonight while I have the overnight watch seriouspost.

Two quick questions...

1. Can you use a guillotine cutter on Nubs? It looks like they would work on the torpedo ones, but just wanted to make sure.

2. Georgia goons, do you guys have much trouble with your humidors as far as keeping the right temp/humidity? I'm in middle GA and it stays pretty humid. I have a humidor on the way and was just curious as to how easy/difficult they are to keep around here.

Thanks!

I'm in Middle AL and it's not too big a problem. If the humidor is pretty well sealed and you've prepared your humidifier right it should be fine. The South being so hot all the time makes it hard to keep the temp at 70. 70/70% is usually the standard, but 70+ degrees means the target H% is under 70% (correct?). So if your house is a little warm, a humidity reading in the upper 60s isn't something to worry about

Hope that makes sense

THAT being said do try to keep your humidor in a cooler and less exposed place. I found under my bed worked well for me.

Do you have air conditioning? I'm in Savannah and it is fine in the central air. Mine actually have to be kept from getting dry. The real Georgia humidity will cause them to mold. The real Georgia temps will let any beetles hatch. I manage to stay at 74 degrees and 65% humidity with my humidor and coolerdors.

Be sure to season that humidor right and get it stable before you fill it with your cigars or you'll just ruin your goodies.

If your cutter is built to handle man-sized cigars, then yes. You don't need to get the blades all the way around the cigar, just enough to shave part of the cap off.

GaiaFag: you should check out these for easy-to-maintain humidors. Seriously.

I had been having trouble with mine here in Miami. It finally resolved and will hang around 70 with no humidification equipment. I keep it in a room that has little sun exposure, lots of AC, and packed with cigars. Those things will help to decrease humidity pretty well. Also, give it time. Don't try to get it at 70 right away. A new humidor will fluctuate over the course of a few weeks while it gets acclimated. Your best bet is to just let it go for a few weeks, take out the humidification devices if its too high and see where things settle.

And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

I just got back from a show at Hot Springs, and since i didn't want to hang out at the bar all night, I decided to walk to a totally different bar and hang out. On my way I stopped by a little cigar shop right next to the beer garden, and immediately the lady behind the counter pounced on my friend and I. I don't really smoke cigars, but she was pretty insistent, so out of politeness I let her show me around. While I looked over the few jars of pipe tobacco I heard my friend ask from behind me "what are acid cigars?" She must have seen something in my eyes, because the shopkeeper could tell I knew what they were, so she paraded out about a half a dozen different sticks, and at least as many Gurkhas, hell you should have heard the sales pitch for the Makers Mark special.

Eventually I told her that I just wasn't a cigar kind of guy and that my palette was just too unrefined to appreciate a cigar like that, purchased a couple of ounces of tobacco and left. My friend ended up buying a few Acids. Now I think if I had only carried that picture of Jonathan Drew around with me in my wallet I could have saved her fifty dollars.

Smoking a Fuente in your back yard is one thing. Going to Vegas and having a Casa Fuente in Caesar's with a Mojito and the girls who work there is something entirely different. Doing it at CF is a good experience whether you care for AF or not.

However, I have never had a Fuente that didn't tarball on me and I have had every price range in the line from the green band to the King B to the Opus, Anejo, and GoF. I don't like spending $40+ on a cigar which tastes worse than a $6 Oliva or Torano and spits tar into my mouth as though I was sucking on a melted tire.

Mostly they are good intro sticks and like any cigar* it is subjective enough that you will find people who like them and people who don't. Though the pricier ones are overhyped and I don't think that's debatable.

*not Gurkhas. Anyone who "likes" those has no taste.

I guess I can understand the arguments on both sides. For now it has seemed like a safe bet. I'm not sure what "tarball" means exactly so I have no idea if I've had that happen yet. Aside from AF I've found I enjoy a few of the RyJ brand cigars.

Do you think the combo bags they have at the Bethlehem store would be a good idea to check out for someone relatively new to the whole hobby? Also what sort of brands should I also look for. I tend to enjoy a medium flavor, but am ok with trying something a little on the stronger side.

I'm going to be setting up one of those cooler humidors when I get back home so I'm trying to get an idea of what direction to go towards with brands and such.

It is the cigar, and it's just bad luck. I've had it happen only once out of all the cigars I've smoked, and it wasn't a Fuente.

No, Fuente's problem is much more simple: they can't make a cigar that tastes good. They are all very boring, middle-of-the-road smokes. Nothing ever reaches out and grabs you.

Marry a beautiful woman who loves you.

Marry a beautiful woman who likes nice restaurants, good food, wine, etc.

Marry a beautiful woman who loves for you to smoke cigars.

Love said beautiful woman.

Take said beautiful woman to nice restaurants and feed her good food, wine, etc.

Smoke wonderful cigars after dinner while said beautiful woman has dessert.

Take said beautiful woman home.

Repeat.

That said, dinner tonight was at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse. I have NEVER been before so this was on my list of things to do. My daughter took me to dinner at Morton's Steakhouse in Bethesda, MD for Father's Day.

Today, reservations were at six. We arrived and I had prepared well. I had reviewed the menu and wine list and was ready to go. We split a salad with Lemon basil dressing. The wine was Silveroak Cabernet Savignon, Alexander Valley. We ordered the Cowboy Ribeye, hers cooked Pittsburg, mine cooked extra rare. We had a baked potato and asparagus with hollandaise on the side. After dinner we were going to leave to go to the bar across the street to smoke my cigar when the waitress said, "I can open up the patio for you and you can smoke out there." HEAVEN. She opened the patio and we retired to there. I had a Don Pepin Garcia Series JJ torpedo from the boxpass with coffee and Courvosier VSOP. My wife had the Chocolate Explosion cake with coffee. For the next hour, I enjoyed one of the best cigars I've ever had. The wrapper split ahead of the burn, the draw was very easy, but there were clouds of smoke in the slight breeze and the flavours were smoky, slightly sweet, strong tobacco, and blended so well with the dinner aftertaste and the coffee and the cognac.

This was certainly one of the top five dinners in my life and one of the top five cigars. I am hunting down a box of these and planning a repeat! Tonight was "Date Night" and it did not disappoint. I told my wife, "This is why I work; to be able to afford to do this and feel like this. Life is good!"

Also, Znorps! Try the Oliva Series G maduro. I smoked one this past week with my son-in-law and we both agreed that it was flavourful and medium-bodied. I have another and look forward to smoking it. Oliva has some good cigars in several lines. I'm sure others will chime in with there Oliva recommendations. That said, remember, smoke what you like!
