Last winter (2008) I was shooting in -20C and it was loving collllld. I have a pair of fingerless gloves which work when it is cool out but useless at that temperature. Also your battery life really goes downhill.

Not sure where the best place to ask is so I will start here. I am going to be doing another trip up to the Canadian rockies, it will be around 10ish days I think with 4-5 of those in Jasper. Last fall I did a similar trip and found my self feeling a bit lost in finding locations to shoot (landscapes and wildlife). I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions on locations or has a website or book that may have some insight into some locations. I don't mind hitting up some tourist trap/iconic locations but I would also like to get some photos of areas that are less visited. Any help would be great!

Edit: after reading the thread title a few times this probably does not belong here..

Nikon will be selling stuff at MSRP, everywhere else will be selling it for less (except maybe hot new products). I am not really sure who it is meant for, anyone who knows anything will buy from B&H or something like that since you get the same product for less. Maybe they will sell re-furbs or something like that I am not really sure.

Continuing the conversation from a couple months ago, I have thousands of pictures organized only by date in Lightroom, and I need to clear off lots of hard drive space.

Is there any way to organize the pictures that have been edited in any way?

Just select all the ones that have been cropped/adjusted (or the reverse?)

Buy another hard drive or something, storage is cheap these days and unless the photos are super awful, out of focus etc there is no real reason you should get rid of them. That said not sure how you would select edited files, often when you import a preset is added, thus editing it.

There has been a flurry of interest in some work a good friend/colleague has recently published about meta-materials, the interest being in its potential cloaking properties. For your general interest:

Today we had a photographer from Reuters come down to take some shots. Really nice guy, he had with him a couple of well worn Canon 1D's with a 200-70mm, 70-28mm and 100mm macro. Interestingly enough he said that they were not allowed to do such things as taking out blemishes, scratches or any cloning, and if he did he'd lose his job. Only post processing that was allowed was what is achievable in a conventional darkroom.

That is the standard for journalism and why when people are caught cloning in extra missiles or smoke it is a big deal.

Hard to say really. I have never worked for a major publication for something like that but I am guessing no? It is a really tough call on where to draw the line or to decide what is a "non relevant" detail. An extra missile in a photo may be a minor detail for someone but a major one for someone else.

I have had the urge to try to get a bullet coming out of a barrel by just trying to get lucky with a 1/8000th shutter speed as fast as the camera can shoot in succession.

Doing it with a sound activated flash and a small aperture and long exposure sounds like it might create a better result.

I doubt using a fast shutter speed will do it, I think using a flash would get you much better results.

I think those fees do 2 things, limit the people who has just got a rebel from entering 20 shots of flowers and to re-coup some of the costs with having to have someone look at every photo that is entered.

Dread Head

Yes the fee makes them money but they also serve to discourage useless entries etc, you also have to watch out for contests that are rights grabs.

Same here. The guys at one of the local camera stores claim they can always tell the students from this particular diploma mill by the stupid questions they ask. Apparently you don't need to know what an f stop is to get an MFA in photography! :v:

In case it wasn't obvious, that school is also the most expensive one in the area as well.

I actually had thought about going to the school, I had even gone and had a tour and met some of the teachers etc but didn't seem worth it. I later actually purchased a lens from a teacher that used to work there. I have seen some really good work come out of the school but I am not sure how good they where before they went in. Like anything you will get good stuff and not so good stuff.

Yeah, I think the huge disparity comes from the fact that the instructors at these for-profit schools have no motivation whatsoever to cull the poor students from the ranks. Hell, even at the JC I attend I've seen many students dropped for absence or for missing assignments.

Fun Fact: The diploma mill here is the private institution with the most real estate assets in San Francisco. They have gobs of money. It's unreal.

This school seems to be better than most of these places and didnt seem to be raking in the money since the "campus" was not that nice and tuition was not that much more the public school I went to (for non arts stuff). That said, I am not sure how much someone would really get out of it, and talking to one of the past teachers who shot for some pretty big magazines he didnt seem to keen on the place.
