As I have never used a mechanical keyboard, this whole brown/blue/red thing is new to me. If brown are the "quiet" ones, are they still louder than a regular keyboard and "quiet" is just a relative term? I kind of dig the idea of clicky keys but if brown is still "quiet clicky" I guess I could dig it.

By the way, how do mechanical keyboards go with things like dust and spills? Are they are more robust than regular keyboards or less?
Sound: reds, blacks, and browns are "quiet" because the key mechanism itself doesn't make noise. Bottoming out the key makes a plastic on plastic tap that isn't cushioned by a rubber dome, so normal typing makes more noise. If you type lightly to stop yourself from bottoming out they're near silent, but that's a bit contrived. Blues make a click sound as part of their operation. There are tons of sound comparison vids on youtube.

Feel: Blues have a ton more feedback than browns. Browns aren't really a click, more like a slight bump while depressing the key.

Dust & spills: Better than a membrane keyboard to certain limits. For example, I thing spilling a glass of coke into a mechanical would be worse, because it would get into the switch mechanisms and gunk them up. A rubber dome board you can take apart and wash the membrane and keys. But they deal with normal keyboard cruft fine, and water spills are no issue after it dries out.

I wouldn't say this is true, for Browns at least, there's a definite noise as the thing actuates, it's just not as sharp and pronounced as the blue, which has an additional part intended to make noise.

I told you already, it's pronounced ugzofdodwollicasjab!

Just one opinion, but I find the clicks that the blues make completely intolerable. They are incredibly grating on my ears. I can see the appeal of the extra tactile feedback, but it's not worth it for me if that means dealing with the noise.

I love how they market it as a keyboard for lefties, not for people who just want the numpad on the left.

edit: wait a second, the numpad is backwards! I could never use that thing.

It's ok, they also make a less esoteric version with cherry blues. It isn't made of gameboy plastic, nor does it have japanese printing or a flipped numpad. They also have a modular keyboard series that has a flippable USB plug on the numpad that holds it to where the USB ports are on the main keyboard so you can move it right or left.

Personally, I'm saving up for a Happy Hacking Keyboard and a separate topre keypad I can put on the left.

I'm a horrible person because I have a blue keyboard at work. People have claimed to have become used to the sound but I'm definitely looking at getting a Brown keyboard at some point in the future.

I received a Quick Fire Pro brown switch as a gift recently and I have to say I understand the love of mechanical keyboards now. I'd like to bring the one I got to work but the key font and the big "QUICK<FIRE" on the space bar is less then professional. Does anyone have any opinions on the Rosewill line of mechanical keyboards? I've had bad experiences in the past with their normal USB keyboards and don't want to spend $70-80 on a dud product. I honestly wouldn't mind getting something like the Stealth but I'm too in love with having 10-key available.

If the keycaps are the only problem you don't need to replace the whole board, Cherry switch keycaps are interchangeable. You can buy them off eBay or wasdkeyboards.com. Just make sure you don't buy ISO layout/do buy ISO layout depending on which you use.

But don't let me stop you from buying more keyboards

Some model m's had drainage holes, making them impervious to spills. If you want to be able to pour a liter of coke on your board, you can probably find one on eBay. Just make sure you look up the model numbers of boards with the drains and cross-reference the listing.

That better be diet coke, though, because real sugary coke will leave a sticky mess after it dries. Then you'll have sticking keys.. and a furry/dusty/hairy mess collecting worse than ever.
I'm not even sure why I said this, because thinking about a furry, sticky keyboard is vile.

Obviously the solution is just to run it under the tap till the coke is out. It has drainage holes, should be fine, right?

At long last I decided to replace my reliable, albeit absolutely disgusting $15 Dynex keyboard with a Corsair K70.

The new keyboard just arrived today, and it feels very solid. It's the first time I've used mechanical keys since grade-school but I'm rather liking the MX Reds. The back-lighting is great and so far I quite like the sculpted/textured WASD keys. The wrist-rest also feels nice. The cheap Dynex has been with me for a couple years and I 'm certainly expecting this thing to last a long, long time.

Man I want one of those so bad, but I already have a K60 and am having a lot of trouble justifying the upgrade.

I haven't been able to find out if they fixed the key sticking problem that they never did in the K60 (where after a press and release the key still registered as press until pressed again), perhaps if this was fixed it would be enough reason...

Ok, I want to bite on a mechanical. I've been wanting one for a long time to try out, but I don't really have anywhere nearby that has one to demo. I use my keyboard for about 67% typing and 30% games. My fingers sometimes hurt after long periods of use, (usually when I game after a lot of typing), so I'm wondering if anyone can recommend what might be best for me. Typing/gaming hybrid, preferably either with some macros, or possibly minimalist (Thinking of getting a separate 9-key since I only use it for a few games and never for typing). I'm guessing brown/blacks? I touchtype so not sure if I unintentionally will bottom out or get used to the sensitivity, or what, but I'd love any advice/suggestions. I skimmed the OP, but it's like from 4 years ago so figured posters would have better info.

Logitech G710+ might be a good fit for you. Cherry browns and macro keys.

If your fingers hurt from keys using heavy keys, I doubt you will like blacks. Cherry linear switches, though actuating in the middle of the key press, are pretty easy to bottom out. The Logitech 710 suggestion is a good one, however you can order a sample kit that has the four most common switch types so you can get a feel for what you may want.

http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/index....ampler-kit.html

Browns are a pretty good jack of all trade switch, the the 710 has some nice features. For touch typing I would prefer a little more feed back (I do own the 710 and like it quite a lot) but I can't stand the clicks blues make, and less common switches are very expensive.

Just chiming in to say that I've been using non-mechanical keyboards for 10+ years and just switched to a mx brown (g710+) a week ago. The feel and sound of it is doing things to me a keyboard really shouldnt. It's absolutely fantastic.

Out of boredom I checked their forums today and they finally put out an update for this on 2/25, if anyone else has a K60 with this problem. Guess I'll be hanging on to mine a little longer.
