Fresh Baked Goodness!

Just got my Leopold with browns on Friday.

Holy crap do I love this thing. Not only does it feel better to type on but it also sounds so much more fun. I don't know why I didn't do this sooner... I keep trying to find more reasons to type.

I got it to replace my crappy keyboard at work, but now I think I'm going to have to buy another one for at home. At least I think I'll be able to expense my work one, much like I got them to pay for my trackball.

Key combinations spread all over the layout, or (from what little I understand of vim) having to switch between 'editing' and 'typing' modes is supposed to be less tedious than moving your hand 15cm (or 5cm and reaching with the pinky/ring)?

I could see this if it were an ergonomic keyboard where you're supposed to never move your hand from the ideal position (Kinesis, Maltron, TEK), but with a compact-but-otherwise-regular keyboard...

Trust me, if you have any sort of proficiency with vi/m, there's rarely a need to leave the home row.

The whole point of vim is to not have to move your hands from the home row at all. There is a very steep learning cliff, but once you get past it you can perform many very complicated tasks very easily and quickly.

Very true. I've massively helped my efficiency in vim thought by remapping some keys:

Ctrl is on the alt key, mimicing the command key position on Macs - I find this far more comfortable.

Alt is moved to the windows key position, and windows out to the former Ctrl key position.

Escape is mapped onto the Caps-Lock key, making it a thousand times easier to change modes.

I've had the same thing repeatedly happen to me with Leopolds, but it doesn't always happen. From my experience, if you just unplug the Leopold (shouldn't matter whether it's the keyboard side or the computer side) and plug it back in, Windows will pick it up the second time.

The manufacturing of the leopold mini usb connector is terrible. Especially when combined with their method of emulating NKRO over USB. The majority of EKB's RMAs for the board are due to it. Which end you plug or unplug should make no difference in theory, but it's likely due to the keyboard itself.

The Leopold is otherwise awesome and I'd definitely recommend it.

Razer used to have a "professional" line, I don't know if they still do, which was just white versions of some of their stuff, off the top of my head I believe there was a Tarantula keyboard, a white Death Adder, and definitely 1 or 2 white mouse pads. That said it's hard for me to really recommend any Razer product since they all feel like they are made out lovely Fischer Price plastic, though the Death Adder is a pretty strong exception.

Everything is about the same on it for the moment, and my camera is no better so the previous picture will have to suffice. About the only thing I changed was replacing the yellow Esc key with a doubleshot orange X%&#! one from http://pimpmykeyboard.com/ (signature plastics). Their Panic, purple oops!, X%&#! and dobuleshot red esc keys fit Cherry switches with a mostly row 4 profile, but the rest aren't made to fit cherry switches (the Senior Moment key looks pretty close, I think it's supposed to go on backspace but I can't get the stems into the key so I think the mold is a little off).

old picture:

As for the Zinc keycaps, I've had a few instances where I accidentally hold down one of the keys since the zinc keycaps change the force of the switch so much, so I'm either going to need to desolder and mod a few of my blue switches with black springs for a ghetto green switch or take the keycaps off at some point. I don't like screwing up while I'm gaming by accidentally moving when I'm not supposed to be, but I like the feel of the metal keycaps, so I'm sort of undecided on how to proceed. The final plan for this board is still to use the diablo set of keycaps, but that's still a while off so I'm trying different things while I wait. If I did a ghetto green mod on WASD keys, I could undo it for the Diablo set, but that's extra work and I'm kind of busy, so nothing has happened yet.

Finalized set design (they're currently waiting on the first proof set from SP):

Depending on how dark the dark gray plastic of the keycaps turns out, I might cover the gray top paint of my CM Storm Quickfire with some vinyl adhesive stuff like others have done, although I probably won't use the Carbon Fiber pattern that seems so popular. It seems kind of tacky to have vinyl that looks like another material to me, although as you can tell by my keyboard, aesthetics aren't really my thing.

I've ordered some stuff for some other keyboard projects while I wait, though. I bought a WYSE terminal board not too long ago for the keycaps. I'm going to clean and retrobright the keycaps, but since I'm not going to use them soon (I was too late to get into the moogle kit group buy), I'm also going to retrobright the case and I ordered parts for Soarer's Teensy AT/XT/PS2/Terminal to USB converter to play with. If I can get the hang of working with the teensy microcontroller, I'm eventually going to get a 122 key IBM Model F and convert it to USB. I'm hoping the internals of a Model F will fit into a new 122 key shell from Unicomp that I could get in black. If I mounted the Teensy internally, I could even put the LEDs into the LED windows and basically end up with rather large N-Key rollover buckling spring board.

The WYSE board itself is nothing special but it's a pretty solidly built and the one I got was in remarkably good shape for having been used in a paint store for who knows how long. It uses Cherry MX Black switches. I haven't done any electronics tinkering since my computer architecture class so it will be fun just to mess around with that even if I don't have long term plans for that particular keyboard. The parts for that are going to be in the mail for a while so it might be next month before I can actually do anything with it. I bought a few components from Chinese sellers on ebay, so shipping can often take a couple of weeks.
My WYSE board looks like this one (though this is not a picture of my actual keyboard), I kind of like the serious business styling and the use of multiple grey tones and black:

I also ordered some EL wire, I want to see how it looks inside my CM Storm under the smoky semitransparent ABS keycaps that I'm using. I doubt it will be a permanent addition because it's kind of odd backlighting, but I wanted to play with some EL wire and buying it for this was a good excuse. It's coming from another ebay seller in China so it might be a few weeks before I can mess around with it. I saw this guy add backlighting to a rubber dome keyboard with USB powered EL wire in this youtube video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEW2HjCn0vk
...and while he doesn't have semitransparent keycaps, you can kind of get an idea of what the project would entail if I was dedicated to doing the whole thing (which I'm really not, unless I decide that I like it after I try it out).

My Leopold arrived today, and I've gotta say: I do prefer the MX brown switches to the blue on my CMStorm. The Otaku style is taking some getting used to, and what I find really funny is that I can forget where my hand is and look at the keyboard to regain positioning, despite the keys missing their labels. Funny how that works.

What do you mean, ergonomically weighted? You mean variably weighted? I don't think the variable weighting has any ergonomic effects. I have both a 55g uniform weighted and a variable weighted Realforce. I think the variable weighted is absolutely great for typing and programming. A consistent 45g weight would be basically the same. I think 55g is perfectly good too. I don't have a real preference between them. Also, I think somebody mentioned using a variable weighted keyboard for gaming and it was just fine. I agree that it would be fine. The differences in weighting is not noticeable unless you're looking for it.

Generally speaking, Topres basically the way the force diagram would suggest. It's very clear when a key has and hasn't been pressed (not that the same isn't true of blues). I'm not sure you can rationally say whether, of Topre or some Cherry color, one is better than the other, unless you're bottoming out on some Cherry and getting joint problems. I got weak feelings of pain in my finger joints after banging away at an Apple chiclet keyboard at work, that's why I got the Topres. I'd say the probability of you being happy with a Topre switch is greater than that of you being happy with a Cherry switch. I've never seen anybody unhappy with them, but I have seen people happy with them (after trying various switch types), and I did not like Cherry MX blue switches the times I got to type on them.

My personal key type ranking right now is Topre variable > Topre 55g > buckling spring* > Thinkpad chiclet > Thinkpad scissor-switch > Cherry MX Blue.

*this ranking ignores the mind-crippling cacophony of buckling spring switches.

I just unpacked my first mechanical keyboard, a Quickfire Rapid with Brown switches, and I'm very pleased so far. The build quality seems extremely solid and the feel of the switches is amazing. It's quieter than I expected too, really no louder than the very old and worn out rubber-dome it's replacing. I think I'm already getting the hang of not bottoming out the keys, too.

Yeah, it's only the wired one, and it's not software-fixable. There are some non-gamer problems as well, such as an issue typing words that contain "ine".

The problem was complicated, however, because Logitech's customer service boggled things, vacillating between ignoring the issue and blaming the customer, with CSRs saying things like "Well, it's not a gamer keyboard. You should have bought a gamer keyboard then."

Yep. Possibly due to the oncoming wave of gamer nerd rage, they quietly started offering swaps to Illuminated owners. There wasn't anything official or a recall, but if you called them and sweet-talked a CSR, they'd send you a K800.

I nearly bought a $35 Illuminated refurb just so I could call them and trade it for a K800.

More generally, I worry that the whole 'animal rights' viewpoint is sort of decadent or even dangerous since it can serve to reduce the value of human life when it tries to elevate the value of animal lives.

I think that's what keyboard nerds call NKRO for "n-key roll-over". Or was it some other issue separate from that?
