They probably are, otherwise I think they would explicitly mention something like "custom designed short travel keys by cherry exclusively for steel series!" since that's usually a selling point.

At least it has cloud storage, that's something I've always wanted in a keyboard.

Edit: also, if you happen to be in the group buy for round 2 of sprit's custom pcb on geek hack check your email, since he's now invoicing. http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=50580.0

I find that Razer's clone of Blue feels better to me than actual Blue.

Either way, it means Cherry might be less expensive for the brands that keep them, as they're losing two customers that sell tons of boards due to marketing.

Would anyone have a WASD sampler kit they aren't using/want to get rid of? It's sold out on their site and I wanted to get a hands on feel for the keys. Although I'm sure a trip to Fry's would give me a pretty good idea.

CODE with MX Clears on Massdrop. Kind of tempted to order another one even though I got in on the Poker with MX Clears because... reasons.

Also ErgoDox kit available again, but while I'm intrigued by the idea I don't think I can really use it considering how many different computers I switch between.

Seems like the Clear is basically a brown, but with a bit more of a pronounced bump for the tactile feedback and a stiffer spring.

Here's a page that explains all of the different Cherry MX switches.

Looks like Newegg is getting rid of some stock, Rosewill with browns just popped up on Techbargains for $65: link.

On the topic of browns, I recently got my first mechanical and it's pretty groovy (slightly used CM Storm courtesy of SA-Mart). My couple qualms were the noise for later at night if the ol' lady was already asleep a room over, and with my usual preference for scissor keys the bump wasn't doing it for me. Some $8 o rings from Amazon smoothed out both concerns!

The G710+ only comes in one version, and it uses MX Browns (with O-rings). The Black in the description is the physical color of the keyboard, not the switch type.

Is there anything comparable at the ~$100 price range? I already have a CoolMaster Quickfire in Browns. Maybe I can just swap the spacebars so the CM doesn't have that stupid looking "QUICK FIRE" logo on it and take it to work.

And the Itsy Bitsy Spider
went up the spout again.

I don't think they'll make the "late July" release. Four days ago one of Corsair's technical marketing specialists had this to say..

quote:

It has been a long road and while we have cleared many hurdles, there are still a few more to tackle before this keyboard can be released. One of the consequences of being the first one to work with a new Cherry switch is that we had to design everything from scratch. There is nothing internally that is shared with previous Cherry MX keyboards as we even had to design a new PCB to support the new switches and LED designs. We understand that the wait is crucial and people are very desperate to get their hands on a keyboard, but we will not release a product until we are sure that all the bugs and kinks are squared away in order to deliver a positive customer experience.

There will be nothing more frustrating than to get a product you’ve been waiting almost a year for and it does not live up to the hype or expectations of customers like yourself. We understand not everyone may have patience, it is more important for us to make sure everything is A+ and worthy of the Corsair branding. I understand your impatience but I hope this helps you understand why it has been a long battle.

The price of meat has just gone up, and your old lady has just gone down

Considering a rush to market with their new gaming product ended up causing them to put out a batch with faulty ink on the keys, and it still used dome keys for the function row, control group, and macro bank on the priciest one (though they're not bad domes or anything). But I understand the reaction to a pair of mech boards with moderate price premiums and an overall "high end" aesthetic showing up without their full complement of mechanical switches. That was a bit of a debacle as I recall, and while they've got it sorted now, they seem like the kind of company that can learn from their errors?

my first mech was a Filco Majestouch with Brown Cherry MX switches, I had it for three years. Wouldn't really recommend it, the cable is pretty weak for an expensive keyboard, and there are absolutely zero frills, and zero design niceties. The letters for S and C also rubbed off, and a fair few keys were visibly stained from finger acid (sebum?)

I've had my Das Keyboard 4 for three or so months, and it's great. Blue Cherry MX switches this time, the DK4 comes with media controls that are really nice. The edges of the keyboard are sharp for some reason, like quite sharp at points, but it's not a big deal. It feels and looks nice, but again, no frills, just a normal keyboard with mech switches. Yes the media controls are really handy, the volume knob is great, but honestly, you can get the same controls on a $10 keyboard.

That being said I'd recommend it. As for whether I prefer Brown or Blue, I feel indifferent, they're both good. Both have their slight advantages, brown is nice because it feels really smooth, it does feel 'tactile', blue is good because it clicks, and clicks are awesome.

Is there a site that aggregates all the keyboards currently available for a certain kind of switch? It seems pretty hard to keep it together due to newegg selling big brands and then the smaller manufacturers each having their own websites.

Not exactly, but http://mechanicalkeyboards.com/ carries a lot of brands and supports sorting by switch. They run out of stock on imported keyboards fairly often.

Yea I ordered mine on that site. They do keep listings for a lot (a lot!) of out-of-stock items but I kinda like that because if you really want it, at least you can learn the model number and go look for it on ebay or something. If you filter directly from the homepage, you can tick 'in stock only'.

Trying out a cherry blue cooler master quick fire. I like it a hell of a lot more than the scissor switch Logitech Illuminated I had before. I thought the Logitech was a great scissor keyboard compared to other non-mechanicals out there, but this thing is fantastic.

Though since I don't touch-type, I think I'll switch over to the green switches since I bottom out no matter what and could use a little more resistance. I could either get the no-frills cooler master stealth with greens, or perhaps the CODE 87 w.greens. But I'm not sure it's worth another $70 over the cooler master.

Well, they'd reduce the bottom-out sound but bottoming out isn't exactly the most annoying sound those produce.

I don't know about the Corsair K70, but I had a G710+ for a year and it was pretty good. I got it because it was mechanical and had media keys (specifically a keyboard mounted volume knob) but after a year the WASD area keys and shift key started developing a resistance to typing. I don't think this is typical as I seem to go through a keyboard a year so maybe I just type like a mongoloid.
I have a couple friends with the G710+ and they haven't had problems either. Also Logitech's support owns.

My Ducky came in today! Overall I'm pretty drat impressed with it. As soon as I took it out of the box, I let my roommate and girlfriend try it out and now they're both set on buying one. A few of the stabilized keys felt mushy out of the box, particularly Backspace but also the plus-sign key and numpad enter key. I pulled the caps, wiggled the stabilizers, and re-seated the caps. That helped but they still don't feel super clicky like the rest of the keys. I have now learned that Cherry-brand stabilizers are not so great, but whatever.

So I'm gonna take this one to work on Monday and start shopping for a home keyboard!
