Has there been any reliable information on when the Pok3r 3 with back lighting might be released.

Hey guys, anyone in the UK check out Scan.co.uk - they have K70 RGB's (with the Sail logo to boot) in Reds and Browns for £119.99 + P&P - the cheapest I've see in the UK. If you have like 20 posts on Hexus forums you get free next working day delivery. Just ordered some browns, came down to a coin toss between that and reds to be honest.

there aren't any pre-built 40% keyboards up for sale, are there? i've never actually built poo poo like that before, so i don't trust myself to get all the parts together from a DIY set correctly.

I was looking for the same thing. Until the JD40's go back up for sale I think this pre-built Planck is your only option. I'm hesitant because I've never used a grid style keyboard before. There's also the GON Nerd Mobik but the pre-built ones are going for $380.

I'm looking for a cost-effective, quiet mechanical keyboard. My preferred switches are the Cherry MX Reds, but they are too loud for me unmuffled, and I'm not interested in doing the O-ring mod myself. Does it sound like the Razer Blackwidow Stealth (2014) is the keyboard for me? I understand the Razer Orange switch is like a Cherry MX Brown with a less noticeable tactile bump, which seems like the closest approximation to the Cherry MX Red I'm going to get on a quieter keyboard, and with open-box models for $64 on Newegg I don't think I'll beat the value.

If Reds are too loud for you, all keyboards are too loud for you and you'd best switch to a touch inout device for everything. O-rings are also incredibly easy to install and just takes some time. Dont buy a Razer keyboard. They're knockoff switches and its Razer, they break fast.

If a Red is somehow too loud for you then you'll have to switch to something like rubber domes or use o-rings. Why can't you use o-rings?

Actually a stiffer switch might reduce noise by reducing the force when you bottom out the key, which is pretty much the only noise-producing part of the linear switch anyway. Obviously this depends on what you like - blacks or browns are the major options I can think of.

To clarify, it's not that I'm against using a keyboard with O-rings, I just don't want to spend $100 on a keyboard then have to do the O-ring mod on each individual key myself, that's Some Bullshit(tm). I know the Cherry MX Reds are quiet as mechanical switches go, but they are still loud as hell compared to a traditional membrane keyboard. I'm not a big fan of Razer products in general, but I think the available evidence is that Kailh switches are just as good as Cherry MX if you're not worried about breaking them while swapping keycaps. Hopefully I end up liking the Razer BlackWidow Stealth, if not at least it was cheap.

Isn't an o-ring mod literally just slipping the ring over the stem of the key? You're not actually doing anything involved or difficult.

It's something you can do while sitting around at your desk in less than half an hour. It's nice to have a decent keypuller, though. Razer stuff tends to have pretty poor build quality in my experience (and that of some friends), so I personally wouldn't throw money their way. It can be slightly time consuming, though. I think my Corsair K65 took me about an hour to do the whole thing, but that includes removing the o-rings from my old keyboard. So effectively twice the work, I think removing them is more annoying than installing them.

And there's the matias quiet pro which is marginally quieter than a normal cherry, but not that much. (The matias quiet switch has some damping bits on the inside of the switch, but not nearly as much rubber as you get with o-rings.) If just the plain sound of plastic on plastic is a big problem the better direction for a premium keyboard is topre. Or just don't be a big baby about having to install a $5 packet of o-rings yourself on a $100 (!!!!!) keyboard.

Spilt a cup of coffee over my CODE last week. I thought I got it all but now my spacebar is sticky. Took the space bar off and I can see some coffee residue around the base of the switch. What's the best way to try and clean it up, preferably without replacing the switch?

I'm looking for a smallish mechanical keyboard that still has a numpad. I've been thinking about getting a Cooler Master storm quickfire tk. Is that a good choice or are there other better keyboards with the sameish layout? I also would like to be able to get it in Nordic layout and with brown switches (or something similar if there is such a thing). Any ideas?

It has some minor differences in the way the numpad and various lock keys are set up, but they're pretty nearly the same board. I prefer the Plum's overall look, layout, and stock keycaps, but if you're going to replace the keycaps or don't care, the CM is easier to get and the layout differences are pretty unimportant. I grabbed the Plum off Massdrop a while back, but unless it comes back you'd probably have to buy from a Chinese site or get one used, which sounds like way more effort than it's worth, since it really doesn't have any notable advantage over the CM.

I wish they did a version without the custom sculpted keycaps and the milled wood and whatnot. It's basically just an ergodox with an unfucked thumb cluster and a palm button, which is a Good Thing.

That was basically my thoughts when I came across this a couple weeks ago. Heirloom is silly, and really the wood is silly too, but $300 is not excessive for a preassembled Kinesis-alike. It's just got so much hipster bullshit on the page it sounds ridiculous.

The op seems a little old. Can anyone recommend a small size keyboard with mechanical switches that is good for typing. I bought a happy hacker lite 2, and while I love the size and layout it feels pretty mushy. I enjoy typing on my macbook air keyboard, if that makes me a horrible person, well, add it to the list. Because of this I am considering the apple wireless keyboard, but I would prefer something that doesn't need batteries. Budget is sub $100.

Finding a 60% mechanical keyboard (which is similar in size to the wireless Apple) for under $100 is going to be a challenge since its a niche market within a niche market. Your best options are waiting for Massdrop to put up the KC60/V60 again or browsing the r/mechmarket and geekhack classifieds. If you up your budget to $110 you can get a new V60 w/free shipping

Hey all, I just switched from a laptop to a desktop and I've been using a spare Logitech K740. I really like the feel of the laptop keys, since I've been using them for about half my life. The only issue is that its ghosting is awful. I don't typically play keyboard intensive games, but even stuff like FPSs and the Binding of Isaac get really hard to control. I know I'd never use the function keys in a serious gaming keyboard, and I really don't like the feel or sound of mechanical keyboards, no matter how many millimeters shorter I'd have to move my fingers. So basically, I need a barebones keyboard that has some semi-decent anti-ghosting. Preferably not mechanical, but in the end I'd be fine either way. This all may be moot with Amazon's Prime Day, if I can score a higher end keyboard for <100, I'm gonna jump on it no matter what.

With reference to ghosting are you referring to either rollover issues or actual missed inputs? If its the latter you're encountering, that's just one major reason to buy a mech. The construction of scissor or rubber dome key switches make them very susceptible to missed inputs with use. You should be able to grab a CM Storm Red for <90 on Amazon. If that's too busy for you, a Rosewill Red is ~100. BitesizedNike fucked around with this message at 04:27 on Jul 10, 2015 |
