I don't understand why Microsoft and Logitech spend all this time with new keyboard designs, putting new keys all over the loving place and generally messing with every detail EXCEPT THE loving KEY SWITCHES. They use the worst loving mush switches imaginable and I can't ever use them because of this. Why?!!

What the hell are you guys doing not pimping Unicomp who owns the design and manufacturing rights to the Model M, complete with the original IBM tooling?!

I just bought 2 of them and they are exactly like my super old Model M. The plastic is even textured in the same way. The buckling springs feel and sound EXACTLY like they should as well. Overall for 70 bux it is a bargin. The original M's cost around $120 back in the early 80s.

I actually came here to post about my new Unicomp 104. I really like the feel of this board, but it's god damned big. I wish I would have gone with the space saver model, which has the same buttons and layout but with a smaller form factor.

After typing on it, I'm unsure spending an additional $50 or so for a Filco board would give me any tangible gain. But it's loud and ugly, just like the keyboards I learned to type on. Coming from a logitech illuminated board, it's a transcendant experience.

I loving love my Unicomp model M. Best keyboard I have ever used. Also after a few months it is breaking in nicely. Keys are a bit less hard to push and smoother. I have no clue why anyone is messing with cherry switches.. I have tried them and the feel like cheap model M switch knock offs. Then again my opinions suck.

Yup, it's the venerable Model M. Quite possibly one of the few pieces of hardware that are still around from the old post-Pentium Dark Ages of computing. I find they're harder to get ahold of these days as businesses clean out old stock and supply dries up, but the things are heavy, durable, and depending on how you get your hands on one, cheap to free.

I still have one hooked up to this Windows 7 machine, I originally had another one but I ruined the switches by trying to fix a few sticky keys. The one I'm using now used to have an AT cord attacked to it, and it later developed problems with being detected, but one cord replacement later it was working fine.

The main complaint that I have about it is the fact that it lacks any Windows keys. Though depending on who you ask, this can be a welcome feature.

This is why you buy a Unicomp Model M copy with windows keys and a USB plug. It is every bit the keyboard the originals were. Love it to death.

I hosed up and poured near half a glass of scotch into my unicomp model M. After I cleaned it out it was still producing repeating characters and other weird poo poo. I had to get some rubbing alcohol and pour that into the open key sockets, shake and then let dry for a day. Worked fine though. God I love this keyboard. Actual typists love mechanical keyboards and almost always prefer them. However, being used to the apple laptop design... mechanical keyboards are basically on the opposite side of the keyboard spectrum. I have a feeling you wont like them. Apple did use mechanical keyboards a long time ago, they were great. These days its all about slim, aluminum, and some keys thrown in.

Some keys never bottom out - mainly those on the right - while my F keys and to some degrees general keys do.

Using my volume keys (right alt, Windows key, and right-click menu) never bottom out when I use them which actually annoys me for some reason, which made the rubber rings perfect in that case.

Uh what the hell? gently caress that noise, I slam my keyboard hard. The harder you press the more the computer will know you mean it.

For me, switching back to a mechanical after years of using rubber dome was almost night/day. My typing speed also improved dramatically (went from 60wpm error-free to over 90wpm) and after 10+ hours of typing my fingers don't fatigue like they do with rubber domes. After 22 years of typing (about 8 of which have been on mechanicals almost exclusively) with poor wrist position I have yet to experience any sort of RSI.

I find that keyboards using cherry switches are almost as bad as rubber domes though. Maybe it's a personal pref thing but I tried out my brother's Deck Legend and I can't stand using it. Give me buckling springs or give me death.

Does anyone know where I can get a 5.5mm nut driver with thin socket walls so I can take apart one of my model m's? I see they're on amazon but at $8 I want to know what I'm ordering will actually fit. The years of dried vomit, spilled pop, and god knows what else has caused it to develop a few peculiarities that I'm sure could be solved by a good cleaning but all the 5.5mm nut drivers I have are too large to fit into the holes.

Also, it appears that Unicomp now offers a spacesaver with Mac-friendly keys. http://pckeyboards.stores.yahoo.net/onthestick.html

It doesn't say if that version is buckling spring or rubber dome though, but I bet you could get them to put the keys on a customizer if you prefer a full-size board. If the lack of Mac-friendly keys were the main reason for you to not switch to a model m, now you have NO EXCUSE. :colbert:

I'm with you man. The cherries are good, way way better than buckling dome but buckling spring is ultra win. I've been using these Model M's since I was a kid and they are basically my favorite keyboard ever. With the small exception of this one Data General terminal board.. which is from like 82. It's keys are just incredible. Sadly its not convertible into anything usable on a PC.

But yea, I have a nice new Unicomp model M and it rules. If Unicomp goes away I will cry like a baby and then buy up old stock on ebay.

You can't just link that without the best part:

"Sadly, the listing hardly does this product justice. The brass is actually from free range ore mined by blind Benedictine monks, then slow-forged to perfection in the ancient fires of Pompeii and cooled in unicorn tears. Then it is lovingly hand polished by rare albino panda bears high atop a Tibetan mountain. No, not that mountain. It's a secret one only the wealthy know about.

The switches themselves are from the Apollo 11 command capsule (the lunar lander switches are extra), and each is blessed by the Machine Spirit to improve both K/D ratio and one's ability to quickscope. The buttons are hand-penned in English using a unique ink crafted from the ashes of the Library of Alexandria, and painstakingly inscribed by actual elves. Real ones, not those cheap, imitation Keebler or Santa elves you'll find making inferior products. The cable is from AudioQuest, makers of multi-thousand dollar HDMI cables, and is emblazoned with powerful runes invoking the power of the ancient god Yu-Essbee.

The pictures also fail to capture the ethereal glow and low, audible hum that can be heard even over the incessant clacking of the keys. A word of warning, however: some say lesser men cannot handle the magnitude of such eldritch power, and will be consumed by the might of this keyboard, left to roam an otherworldly plane for all time.":allears:
