There are two keyboards I'd like to see, so if anyone has any leads that'd be nice.

1) A "programmer's" keyboard. It should have separate keys for braces and parens at the very least, and spare function keys up the wazoo. Dual numpads would be nice too, but you can always buy a seperate USB numpad so that's not a big deal.

2) A mechanical switch keyboard that has media controls and/or extra function keys too.

That does looks good, but it's PS2 and doesn't work in OS X apparently. I actually don't realistically expect to find such a thing by the way, but cheers anyway. :)

- Dial volume control.

I want one so bad (I use one at work), but I can't find it ANYWHERE, especially a UK version. Help, goons?

I like mine too; the other main hangup I have is that nothing binds in OS X except the push-button media keys.

Search for 0N6249 (0N6250 for US layout) in eBay auction descrptions and you'll find one. Here's one I prepared earlier:

Question about the apple keyboards: Do the extra keys work in Windows? I see it has an FN key so you can use the F-row keys for other purposes, but do these work in Vista out of the box? I don't know if I would need drivers for this or not. Though I guess I could use a keymapper to change the keys I won't need. Any recommendations on that end?

I believe you will have to beg a mac user to send you the windows keyboard driver from the boot camp partition of the OS X install DVD for all the special keys to work.

It's not without its flaws, most noticeably it just seems to randomly stop working and you have to close it and reopen it from time to time, and it doesn't like being put in your startup folder so you have to start it manually once your desktop is fully booted but it does work well when it works.

I've been using an apple wireless keyboard for aaaaages, first on vista now on win7 with this software.

That razer looks a little gimmicky, but perhaps more worrying is that they say the key activation trigger is halfway through the travel. Why bother with a mechanical keyswitch if you're going to implement rubber dome deficiencies?

And it has no media keys which sucks for a "gaming" keyboard.

If it has a proper Mac-layout numeric keypad and isn't just a cheap hack of the meta keys, then I'll probably buy one.

It is seriously common that many keyboards have limitations as to the number and combinations of keys that can be pressed simultaneously. Suggesting that said limitations are part of a conspiracy to upsell to gamers, and not part of a technical implementation to make cheap keyboards cheaper to manufacture, is just paranoia.

Shift and Space are special keys though, and it is extremely unlikely that they would ghost as an inadvertent design failure.

Try that Microsoft keyboard ghosting detector linked a few posts above - I'm pretty sure than on any other keyboard that key combo (Shift+W+Space) will work.
Sure points towards a deliberate limitation.

Unrelated I have an old IBM model F that I found in the PC graveyard my university has. The thing weighs a ton requires a AT to PS/2 adaptor and then a PS/2 to usb but it looked like it was in good condition. Is it a lost cause or does anyone have any suggestions to get it working again.

I assume it's not getting enough voltage. Can you try it on a native AT or even PS2 connection and see if that works?

Replacing help with eject was probably the smartest move seeing that they use the same machines that made the original Model M's. I guess it's too bad they couldn't make it exactly the same with buckling keys, but I'm indifferent.

Also, what Apple Model M elitist would need a help key? :smug:

Well yes, the current Mac keyboards overload volume controls onto the function keys, but in the past they used separate buttons where the caps lock LEDs are.

http://www.cc86.org/~hofmann/bilder%20mm/mm-keyboard8.jpg

I know it probably would not be cost effective* to retool a completely new layout but apart from splitting the + key on the keypad this current version is pretty half-assed for a "Mac" keyboard.

*Or maybe not? Matias still sells their completely custom mechanical Mac keyboard albeit for $150 rather than $95. It adds NKRO and a USB hub, too.

Well some keyboards just so happen to have particularly lovely matrices for certain games. My Dell doesn't do WDX for example which I personally can live with but is bound to be a deal-breaker for certain games that might use the X key for something important.

Then we have Logitech which seems to be purposefully inventing terrible matrices on their cheaper keyboard lines to push people into far more expensive G series gear.

Hotkey combinations using shift, alt, and ctrl work, obviously, but I can't use multiple letters or letters with space at the same time, making gaming very difficult. It's a $70 keyboard so I'd hope it would have the functionality for it, if possible.

I know the OP talks about the Logitech Illuminated but it costs $30 more than the apple and has a retarded bulky delete key instead of the standard delete/insert layout.

Ideally I'd like a keyboard that's ergonomic but uses the laptop style scissor switches but I think that may be asking a bit too much.
