![]() Policenauts is a cinematic adventure game written and directed by Hideo Kojima. Initially released for the PC-9821 in 1994 as a spiritual successor to Snatcher, it was eventually ported to the PlayStation 1, though it never received a release in America... until now. Policenauts.net’s translation project team, including Something Awful’s very own slowbeef, have been working long and hard to produce a workable patch for the game containing an English translation. The English release, started in 2002, is set to be released 8/23/2009 at 12:00PM EDT. "Beyond Coast. Where the heavens meet the Earth." The year 2010. The construction of the world’s first space colony, the O’Neill Cylinder type Beyond Coast has catapulted mankind into the true space age. Technology has evolved with the development, and mankind is slowly moving towards the stars. Jonathan Ingram, an LAPD police officer (and Mars Mission astronaut), is selected to participate as part of the colony’s first space police team, known as the Policenauts. The year 2013. While testing a prototype Extravehicular Mobility Police Suit, an accident occurs, and Jonathan is sent flying out of control into deep space, disappearing seemingly forever. Two and a half decades later, Jonathan is found alive in his space suit, preserved by its cryogenic processes. Returning to Earth, Jonathan finds that the world has passed him by. Things have changed. People have moved on. His wife, Lorraine, has remarried, leaving him all alone... and out of a job. However, it seems something strange is afoot on the Beyond Coast. Lorraine comes to Earth to ask Jonathan to help find her missing husband, leading Jonathan deep into a web of intrigue, full of vice, betrayal, and danger. "Why don't you show me?!" "Good answer!" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQ1FpvVZeVA "Space is a harsh environment." Policenauts English Patch v 1.00 Science Commentary (Do not read until after completion of game) "Hamburgers aren't the only thing I love..." I’ve had the distinct privilege and pleasure to be part of the beta testing for this game, as well as something of a science consultant for the team (I wrote the technical notes for the release (read them AFTER finishing!)). I must say that you guys are in for a great experience, well worth the effort that slowbeef and gang has put the effort in. It has tons of Kojima humor, tons of hidden stuff (you can literally play the game dozens of times without finding all of the little things hidden in it), and a great hard sci-fi plot to boot. It also includes what is quite possibly the best puzzle included in any game in existence. No joke. Spread the word! Get excited! Send slowbeef your praise and thanks! Send your accolades to Marc and the rest of the Policenauts translation project! Zorak fucked around with this message at Aug 23, 2009 around 17:53 |

I can't wait to try it. Hopefully Sony or Konami won't act like jerks and make you take it down or anything. Kojima should be honored.

What's the recommended PlayStation emulator these days? Any special plugins etc. needed?

TheRedEye posted:What's the recommended PlayStation emulator these days? Any special plugins etc. needed? pSX is the easiest emulator to use. There are no plugins or complex configurations. Just set your resolution, configure a controller, pop in the game and play. ePSXe is still the best emulator that uses plugins. Pete's OopenGL2 plugin is the most technically advanced plugin that does all sorts of extremely fancy stuff that's completely pointless in an entirely static 2D game like Policenauts. Otherwise I recommend Pete's P.E.Op.S. plugin for easy to use software rendering: http://www.pbernert.com/html/gpu.htm

The Policenauts translation is finally done, awesome! I can't wait to play it. Policenauts came out in 1994, KOTOR 2 came out in 2004. This means that Team Gizka's KOTOR 2 expansion will come out in 2021, right? Luigi Thirty fucked around with this message at Aug 23, 2009 around 06:14 |

The recommended emulator is actually ePSXe, PSX has some issues with running it. The best way to play the game, though, is on a PS1. There will be a readme included with the release that will help you through patching/ running the game, including recommend emulators, settings, so forth.

Oh my God, I've been wanting to play this game for as long as I can remember. I've been following the project for literally years, and now it's out in less than a day? And not to slag on any of the other people working on it, but everybody raise a mug or something to slowbeef, who helped get the ball rolling on this after a year long stumbling block.

So can I ask nitpicky technical questions in this thread when the patch is posted? 'Cause I have a controller that's supposed to be a perfect PSX/PS2 PC controller and the analogue sticks respond horribly. I wanna say I'm not using the right joystick driver or something but I'm not sure. Saving that for later though. This is exciting and I am very excited for POLICENAUTS FFFFFFFFFFFF

A lot of Kojima's cinematic style developed directly in Snatcher and Policenauts. It's a shame Konami ignores any franchise that's not Castlevania or Metal Gear Solid. I'd kill for a remastered/reanimated blu-ray or something.

Which emulator is recommended for playing this with? I've got epsxe setup at the moment because of it's mouse support but I seem to recall a bug that only affected certain emulators? Either way I look forward to finally being able to play through this game. Cheers to everyone involved!
