Eloping was fun, so was taking a nap right afterwards. I do wish we had nice (by dorkroom standards) wedding day pictures.

I just booked a Cambodian wedding for the summer. Has anyone else ever attempted photograph to one? Or any other culturally different ceremony for that matter? I'm really excited but also terrified.

I went to a Lao friends' wedding reception, it was about 200-250 people and maybe 15 of them weren't Lao/Thai. I'm not sure if this was specifically her case or what, but she only knew the table of 8 people that I was sitting at, everyone else was her parents' friends. They had a couple days of other ceremonies before the reception, but I wasn't really close enough to the family at the time to be invited to that.

Cambodian weddings own, I've crashed (well, they invited us in) one or two of them. Everyone gets really done up and they go on for three days, at least in Cambodia. Grab a copy of the "Culture Shock" series on Cambodia if you want a great primer on cultural do's and dont's. Go through that and you will be pretty much set, at least as far as the cultural stuff goes.

You may find the music not to your liking, but I maintain it's an acquired taste. Dengue Fever is probably the most accessible, to my ears at least.

SHORTBUS

I've done a couple of Indian weddings. They were nuts about the formals and making sure every possible combination of person was in them, so with 45 relatives, the bride and groom, and about 400 friends and well-wishers it was something like 50n! images.

All very stoic and boring in the formals, even though everyone was torn up and dancing like they wanted bigger families. They didn't really want candid pictures, and contracted me out for three days.

The food and booze were amazing and I was stuffed full of both. Everyone got very chummy after they were drunk which was a bit of an issue because it meant I was getting groped and had to body check a few people to keep them from fondling my gear.

However, the pay was excellent and they didn't seem to care if the pictures got cleaned up in post. The top selling pictures were all a bit too high on the highlights.

YMMV. Cambodian food tends to be awesome.

^This reminds me of something fairly important to consider, regarding post:

This will depend on how Westernized the family is, but lighter skin = better in Khmer and many other Asian cultures, especially among women. In Thailand, most wedding photographers would lighten the hell out of the bride's skin in post, a friend of mine went from coffee-colored to Irish. If the family is really Westernized it might come off as kind of crass and tacky, but if they're traditional they'd probably expect/appreciate it.

I'm shooting a non-traditional Indian wedding in October. The bride is indian, but her fiance is Irish, all her sisters have had the big three day wedding festival thing but she just wants something simple and a bit more westernised.

I'm a bit disappointed to be honest, I'd love to shoot a huge Indian wedding at some point.

I'd almost rather shoot boring weddings. All the fun ones do is remind me that I'm there working and not able to down a tremendous amount of scotch and feel up the bride's maids.

I get what you're saying but totally disagree; I can't get into it unless people are having fun, plus there's always a few girls you keep your eye and play the "If she has one more drink will she just let her dress completely fall off?" game.

Don't be bashful in getting in for a shot since you won't get a second chance, but don't be an rear end in a top hat either, and get the classic wedding shots before anything else.

Know exactly what you need to do and you should do fine. So long as you've got the right equipment, know how to get a shot when you absolutely have to, and don't get between the couple and the priest during the vows.

Yep, except I got a cheap knock-off from eBay (search for Lambency Diffuser). They look ridiculous but make really pretty light. Plus, chicks dig them. Here's a gallery from a xmas party I did using it.

Those turned out really great! Thanks for the samples.

smitz, I'm guessing that was your first wedding? Haha yeah, ain't it fun? I find the hardest part right now is just finding the right place to be. There's so many things going on with so many different people. It's tricky to A. be in the right place and B. have the right settings to capture the moment(s), at the same time. I've got two weddings booked in September so I'm refining my skills as much as I can until then. That, and buy some more equipment. On my last shoot, I don't know how many times I thought "I wish I had a fast 35mm, I wish I had a fast 35mm.." I was using my kit lens (18-55 f/3.5) and it just couldn't do it in low light.

Sounds like you need a 50mm f/1.8. I know it's not as wide as a 35mm but for wedding receptions it's a life saver. The 2 2/3rd stops means you can decrease the ISO a stop and capture more ambient light.

You're absolutely right about predicament of having to choose where to go and what to focus on. As long as where ever you go you have something/someone to focus on then you shouldn't regret the decision. (Unless you miss something really important like the cutting of the cake).

Smitz, can you post some more shots ?

Don't forget you can rent lenses. I'm not quite making enough cash to justify buying the f/2.8 70-200mm just yet, so I rent it from a local dealer for AUD$70/day. A lot cheaper than buying it for AUD$2000+

Definitely a good idea. I've rented the 35mm f1.4L lens for two weddings now.

Oh man am I ever conflicted about Jasmine Star's blog. She does take great photos and there is good advice there, but the focus on "creating a brand" and the saccharin nature of so many of her posts really puts me off.
