Yep I think that one is fine. If you want it to look a bit happier you could warm the photo up a bit, but nice job.

Thanks, guys. I concluded it was a lot of work and promptly doubled my pricing. ![]() Re: Brightness - I use a manual flash crosslight setup and I think some of the shots are right under the bulbs. I'll have to work out a better blend with ambient (when it's there). Edit: Also, the dorkroom can claim a hell of a lot of credit for me working hard to learn how to not be terrible before inflicting my 'art' on someone's wedding. Thanks, internet peeps!

Wound up doing my own wedding shots. I'd posted in this thread about half of a year ago asking whether I'd be moronic to just buy my own DSLR (something I'd always wanted) instead of paying the $2 - $3k that the local pros wanted. Went with buying my own. It was obscenely stressful worrying about whether the few amateurs that I had taking shots with my D5100, a D90, and an old Rebel would get what we wanted, and was convinced that I'd made the wrong choice. In the end, though, it wound up working out pretty awesomely. I can sift through each of them and find nitpicks, but the most important part of it is that the wife couldn't be happier. My brother, who was the one who let me talk him into having do it (he really wanted to), took most of the shots... he ended up buying his own D5100 afterwards, so I bought him the 40mm macro lens in appreciation for doing it. I wouldn't recommend that most people do what I did, but it's possible to make it work. Here's a couple of them (though I have a stack of about 500 exposures from it and I'm still post-processing a bunch of them). I fully realize that a pro could have gotten better, but for saving the money and getting into a hobby that I'm completely obsessed with, I'm happy with the results. ![]() CostaRica_120126_1332 by justinlindh, on Flickr ![]() CostaRica_120126_1348-Edit by justinlindh, on Flickr ![]() CostaRica_120126_1395-Edit by justinlindh, on Flickr ![]() CostaRica_120126_0971 by justinlindh, on Flickr ![]() CostaRica_120126_1096-Edit by justinlindh, on Flickr ![]() Family. by justinlindh, on Flickr

I have a friend that wants me to shoot a wedding in October and I'm not sure what to charge. This would be my first wedding and she already has someone shooting digital and she wants me there to shoot film. What is recommended for charging if I am not the primary photographer? Also what are recommendations for lens length? I'll be using a 35mm and a fixed lens tlr. The 35mm I'll be using (Nikon N90s) has a 50mm 1.8 and a Tamron 80-210mm 3.8 macro. Both of these lenses are all manual and kind of old though still take a great picture. Would I be fine with these? Am I shooting myself in the foot by not having auto focus? I never really used it on the lovely kit lens and prefer to just do everything manually. Film wise I was probably going to do a mix of Portra and Tri-X. Has anyone shot a wedding using film before? Was it as difficult as I feel this is going to be? Any and all tips are welcome.

If it's a friend and it's your first wedding just charge them for film and processing. Maybe a little bit on top if you are pretty confident in your ability. It's not worth charging friends/family full price unless you are absolutely sure you can deliver flawlessly. Advisewise, play to the strengths of the medium. Shoot some no flash high speed B&W and use the Portra to get images that wouldn't work well on digital. Since there's going to be another photographer there make sure you are shooting what ever they aren't so you aren't duplicating coverage. Like get the crowd reaction while they are shooting the cake cutting, or shoot from the back of the isle when they are shooting the processional from the front of the church. Try to communicate with the other shooter and stay out of each others shots as much as you can. 8th-samurai fucked around with this message at Mar 24, 2012 around 08:37 |

Ok. For folks interested in seeing wedding #2 - here's a few selected shots. I'm focused on finishing the delivery for wedding#1 so a new story page will be a couple weeks. These files are essentially unedited. I have a preset that runs on import into LR. I'd hoped to make some measurable improvements from one to the other and I think I did that. Also, these guys are super adorable. Few more shots in the flickr set.

Sorry I took a while to post this, but here's a quick and dirty Brenizer method rundown. I took one today while at a senior session for this thread. This is a 13 file shot, but the idea is the same, the more files the more pronounced the effect. For the shooting, I've learned to start with a shot that will have your couple where you want them in the final frame. Take 3 or 4 to make sure your focus is solid, then lock the focus to manual (exposure must be set to manual and unchanged as well) and work top left to bottom right. Having extras of the subject is very important, because sometimes the stitching bugs out and you have to mask in the correct limbs or focus problems. Here's a shot showing everything I took for the photo (25 & 27-38). ![]() 1 by David Childers, on Flickr I edit them in Lightroom (sync all settings to keep consistency). Take those into Photoshop and go to File>Automate>Photomerge. Use auto or perspective modes, they give me the best results (mostly perspective). Go have a drink because it takes a while with large files. When you come back you'll see this ![]() 2 by David Childers, on Flickr This is where you hope and pray it gets it 90% right. In this shot I had to mask in and out her pants until I got them sync'd correctly, as well as some focus spots around her that were weird, took about 15 minutes. If you're not strong with masking you will run into problems where it doesn't have arms/faces/trees lined up correctly. And the final product, I always do a full crop to leave room for whatever I want to crop later from the image. ![]() 3 by David Childers, on Flickr If you have any specific questions feel free to ask, I've been doing these a while now and feel pretty competent with them.
