Sorry to bump this thread, but I'm looking at printers and didn't want to start a new thread.

I have a 1998 Inkjet printer. My mom has a 1994 dotmatrix printer.

I've refilled the 1998 printer a half a dozen times. Ink is expensive and runs out quick. The dotmatrix printer is slow and (of course) loud. They still sell ribbons for it though.

We both want new printers. I remember "Brother" being recommended before.

Is the HL-2140 (no network) and HL-2170W (ethernet and 802.11) still recommended?

Amazon has them for $59 and $89, respectively.

Newegg has toner for $27.

Well, I ordered the 2140 for my mom, and the 2170W for me and my Wife.

Allah willing, these will last 10 years as well.

$20 for toner to do 2000+ pages sounds good.

I think I got around 50-100 pages out of my last $25 (generic) inkjet cartridge.

Sharing a printer sucks. I was able to get a JetDirect box for $13 (shipped) off eBay. Once on the network, printing became so much easier. My mom shouldn't need networked printing as her computer is the ONLY computer at her home.

With all the photo print places around there's really no reason to have your own printer for the occasional photo printout.

That's what I've told people. Why gently caress with getting an inkjet and then spending a poo poo load on ink, when it may be cheaper to just upload your photos to Walgreens or something and go pick up prints?

Ink cost a ton. You could spend $30-$50 on a little container of ink it and get a few dozen decent prints. They give like 100-200 page estimates per cartridge based on 5% page coverage. You'll be out of ink before you know it, grabbing another $30-$50 ink cartridge... Or, pay $0.19 per print from Walgreens.

I'm happy I finally got a laser printer. I hated refilling and refilling my inkjet. I didn't refill the color quick enough, and it dried out, so I have to buy a new cartridge for it. The color one cost around $45 for my printer. The B&W cartridge is "just" $30.
I'd freak out whenever my daughter would print out some picture or my wife would print the same homework assignment half a dozen times as she was working on it. Even if you try to cut back on printing (kinda defeats the purpose of having a printer), you could end up with a dried up cartridge and have to replace it anyway.

Now with my laser printer, I'm not worried. I have 1000 pages left on the sample toner cartridge that came with the printer, and the 2000 page cartridge was on sale for $19.

It probably is even cheaper than spending the money on the special paper and the ink used. I should show them how to use iPhoto or Shutterfly to order prints online. They will hear none of it though.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16828102444 This Canon PIXMA seems pretty good. I'm also looking at this Brother HL-2170W http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16828113291 if I can convince them to go B&W laser. Even getting both stays within $150.

That HL-2170W is on sale for $90 again. That's what I got it for from Amazon. I say grab that.

I'd buy it again if I could. It works on the network, has a web interface with status information, and it auto-installed under Windows 7.

I haven't used it a ton, but so far it has been perfect.

I need to find a b/w laser replacement for the offices hp p3005 (which has been a bit of a pain). The HL 2140/70 seem good for the price, but I'm worried about durability, as there have been both complaints both here and on newegg about how long the things last. It isn't a big office, but we are a small tax/accounting firm, so there are times when we need to print out hundreds to thousands of pages of tax documents.

There may be complaints on Newegg from some users, but keep in mind that of the hundreds of reviews on there, 91% of them are 4 or 5 out of 5 star reviews, with a 5/5 average rating.

I'm looking for a cheap printer for just doing black and white printing of papers. That means a laser printer, right? Any recommendations?

The Brother HL-2170W is at Newegg again for $99.

$109.99 sale, promo code "EMCYZNT23" brings it down to $99.

It's what I saw recommended a few times, so I got one around Cyber Monday or something ($89.99 at Amazon then, $106.99 now).

5/5 rating on Newegg. Very quick and quite. Auto-detects and installs quickly. The Network part is awesome. Ethernet and WiFi support, with a web interface to log into and check status. No messing with sharing the printer, or even using cables if you go with WiFi.

My Brother HL-2170W has been amazing.

First off, it's networked (which is a blessing in a home with a lot of computers). Not just Ethernet, but also 802.11 b/g. So you can have it sitting in a corner someplace and just plug in the power cord. Instant network printer without running cords all over or thinking about physical placement.

It has its web interface where you can view print statistics, amount of toner left, etc. There are also download links right there if drivers/firmware are needed - no need to search any website. If you do have to download drivers, that is exactly what you get: drivers. Not a 300 Meg HP bag of hell.

Also, through some voodoo or some poo poo under Vista/Win7, if you browse the network, the printer shows up. Double-clicking it will auto-install the printer. No need to configure a port or download drivers. The printer even installs with an icon that looks just like the printer. Perfect for new Windows installs or if a friend drops by with a Laptop and wants to print something real quick. Browse, double-click, print. Done.

Print quality has been perfect. Speed is awesome. You send a job to it, and before you can get up to even try and grab the paper, it has already finished printing. Green nuts will be pleased with the "Energy Star" logo on it as well.

I rate it 5 out of 5 pot leaves.

Color laser aren't very good at photos. If you want to print photos there are a handful of printers specifically made for printing photos and only. My experience has only been with the Canon Pixma mini260, but I've also seen models from Kodak recommended. The Canon prints a lot of photos from a tiny, cheap cartridge, but only up to 4x6.

Printing your own photos is only a good idea for very specific situations, like needing them NOW or printing them often enough but at a low volume that it doesn't make sense to go to a photo kiosk every other day. The rest of the time you should either be ordering prints online or going to those kiosks in Walgreens, Walmart, etc.

When talking to anyone about printers, I tell them never inkjet, never color.

* If you want to print documents and stuff, black and white toner is all you need. Cheap and works VERY well.

* If you want to print photos, then go to Walgreens or Walmart.

Inkjet printers are just horrible. Like you said, only specific situations would require you to use one.
If you like printing your porn collection or other disturbing crap, then go ahead and get yourself a color inkjet.

Thought I'd bump this thread and ask if anyone could recommend me a bargain printer. I've bought or been given a few different printers over the past year or so, and I'm sick, sick, sick of getting ripped off with "bargain" printers than then charge ridiculous amounts for ink cartridges.

I'd like to get one that was wireless-networked; I'd like to get an all-in-one if possible, though I could continue to use my older inkless printers for scanning if I have to. But the main thing is just best overall bargain on cost per black and white printed page, so that I'm not spending $50 every time I need to print out a form.

The Brother HL-2170W I've mentioned sounds perfect.

It's print-only, B&W laser. The toner goes for something like $25-$50, but gives you around 2,000 pages (whereas a comparable inkjet goes for $30 a cartridge and gives you 200 or something pages).

It's small, quiet, and does USB, Ethernet, and WiFi.

Check for places that have it on sale for around $90-$110. Amazon and Newegg have sales on it every now and then.

Although I got the wonderful HL-2170W for myself, I retardedly purchased the HL-2140 for my mother. I figured I'd save a bit (it was like 33% cheaper) since she lives alone and wouldn't have to mess with sharing it or anything.

She's now tied down via USB, so my cunning plan of replacing her old Desktop system with a newer Laptop so she can have some wireless computing freedom won't work, as she prints crap every day, and would have to stay tied down to the printer.

I could buy a USB print hub to get the HL-2140 on the network, but those seem to cost almost as much as the printer, and it would lose printer functionality like being able to view toner levels and such.

Network printing is an amazing thing, I don't want to mess with printers that lack it any more. I really should have purchased her an HL-2170W as well. :/

Replace her router with an ASUS WL-520GU and flash it with the Tomato firmware with modded USB support. It works pretty well and is fairly easy to configure.

By the way, for future reference, Office Depot around here has the HL-2170W on sale for less than $100 almost every 2-3 weeks. If anyone is considering buying one of these, check the weekly ads on their site for your area.

She's using a nice WRT54GL w/ Tomato already. Instead of buying another router at $50, wouldn't it just be easier to get a USB jetdirect type of adapter?

Ok, so HL-2270DW is the new HL-2170W?

My 2170W is awesome, and my dad wants one now. They're gone everywhere, of course.

I will send him the HL-2270DW link then if it works the same as the HL-2170W. He just wants good, wireless printer like mine.

Decided to update the firmware on my 2270DW today from 1.02 to 1.10. When I run the update program, I get a message saying "cannot find a machine to update." The printer is installed and works perfectly. It's networked through a switch (not connected directly to the computer via USB).

Has anyone else experienced this? If so, what did you do to fix it?

I could NOT get my 2170W to update at all from Windows (Win7 x64). I ended up running the firmware updater from Mac OS X 10.6 (updated via WiFi).

It kept saying under Windows that it couldn't find anything to update.

Need a new office printer suggestion.

Our old one is an HP LaserJet P3015 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16828115518)

Today, after 4 years (and only 18,000 pages), it died. Bad formatter board or something. It gave a 49.4C02 communication error any time someone tried to print. I updated the firmware and then it gave an 49.4C01 error. I did USB recovery, re-flashed the firmware, and wiped NVRAM. Now it just sits on boot, with "5/6" and "B/F" codes.

I'd like something similar (ethernet, duplexing, 42 ppm, less than $600) that has great OS support. I'd like to avoid HP (quality issues) or Xerox (driver issues), though. AirPrint compatible is a plus.

I'm a fan of Brother printers, but our office manager does not like them.

We have ~8 of these in an office for 260 people and I've had one get hosed up like what happened to you after 20k ish pages. $150 for someone to fix it which made more sense to me than buying a new one. What other issues have you had with HP? In my experience, we have had a much better time with these than Xerox, and we seem to spend a ton more on Brother consumables.

Most of the HP issues are just the number of them loving up on us and our users, and the replacement parts (fusers, drums, rollers, whatever) costing hundreds of dollars to replace. They were great in the 1990s, but the newer ones give us trouble. When us or our users pay $600 for a printer, then discover HP only gives them a 1 year warranty and will cost $200-$400 to fix after just ~3 years of use, it is easier to just buy a smaller printer to replace it.

Even if these little Brother printers last 1 year, paying $100 every year is still cheaper than sticking with the HPs.

With this P3015, I decided to try a formatter board off eBay for $45. If that doesn't work, the office manager said I could replace it with two little Brother printers ($99 each).

I just picked up some Brother HL-L2360DW printers. Best Buy did a $99.99 price match when I showed them the Office Depot web site on my phone with that price (Best Buy had them for $119.99).

One for work to replace the HP LaserJet P3015, and one to replace my HL-2170W at home (I've been wanting Duplex + native Air Print for quite a while!).

It didn't have a super-huge work load (18,000 pages in 4 years), and might be cheap enough to just replace every other year.
