I have a pretty simple recommendation request this time: Scary games. What are the spookiest games I can play, when it comes to the PC? They can be from any time, I'm not picky.

Just to give you an idea of what I'm looking for:

FEAR - Not a big fan. I guess the shooter action was pretty fun, but the horror "sections" were just uninspired, in my opinion.
STALKER - Loved it. Lots of great, creepy atmosphere-building, and the sheer terror that persisted past the jump scare of a bloodsucker was awesome.
Penumbra - HAVE NOT PLAYED THIS. I played a demo a long, long time ago. It was kind of clunky, but I've heard great things about it since, and it sounds like they must have improved a whole lot. Is it worth playing?

Silent Hill 2, 3, 4 & 5 have all been released for the PC. Of those, I would really only recommend 2 and 3, as they have the best atmosphere, story and gameplay in my opinion. They're all separate stories, so you don't need to have played one to play the other.

Dead Space is also available for the PC. It does a pretty good job of building tension. It does have a number of the jump scares, but there's more to it then just that. Personally, I have a hard time with the game because of the controls as I can't get very accurate with the mouse, but others don't seem to have the problem. It's probably your best bet for a horror game on the PC.

It's not that I don't like old games, I've just played all of them. In recent years I've played all of Bioware's stuff, Drakensang, and uh.. Fallout 3/Oblivion, The Witcher, that's it I think. I can't find anything else of recent vintage. There was a goon that posted about another German RPG a while ago that I think should be out by now where you turn into a dragon or something but I can't remember the name of it or find the thread. Help me :(

I'm gonna guess what you're talking about is The Witcher, which is a german RPG based on a novel, where the entire plot branches based on your actions, but manages to do it linearly. The goonthread is here

Hmmm Dead Space if you haven't played it on another system is a great game, Its not as creepy as stalker but it still does the trick. If we were back in 99 id say go with Alien Vs Predator or System Shock 2, but I'm not sure how those games would effect you today. Doom 3(lol) or Bioshock might do the trick for ya, Bioshock more than Doom3 imo. I cant really think of any creepy pc games other than the ones mentioned so far by you or me that would really creep you out.

4 was a lot of fun for the first half of the game. Then it goes through all the levels you already did, but backwards, and escorting someone. There's also some other annoying aspects to it, like your safe area becoming dangerous, and ghosts that can't die. The story gets kind of out there too.

I bought 5 for the ps3, played it for about 4 hours, and returned it. I can't really say what is wrong with exactly, but it's kind of obvious fans of the first game made it, but that doesn't mean they did a good job.

I really couldn't recommend either unless you find em cheap.

Also, I forgot about System Shock 2 and Alien Vs Predator 2, definitely seconding those. They're old, but still pretty good.

No, Silent Hill 2 and 3 really are the best of the series.

While not beeing really scary, Resident Evil 4 is a fun spooky game for the PC. And with a gamepad it's playable quite good.

edit: Oh and if you really would like to know how an unexperienced, nameless marine who fights an overwhelmingly powerful enemy, and usually dies in the first 5 minutes of an action movie feels - then play the Marine Campaign of AVP1.

Play as Alien or Predator and this game is a fun FPS.

Play as marine and it's a survival horror shooter.

I'd second (third? fifteenth?) the suggestions for System Shock series and Alien Vs. Predator. Though I think that the OP might be looking for the Might and Magic series, where it was FPS RPG, but multiple characters. Or the original gold box by SSR of Pool of Radiance. Which is still hella fun, I played through the first episode, but got stuck in the second one due to a glitch from one of my floppies.

If you wanted something a bit more modern, I can't say enough nice things about the relatively new game of Fallout 3. It has a lot of RPG elements, has some very good shooting, is set in an apocalyptic setting, so not as many elves as requested.

Love to hear what you settle on playing though.

Try thief 3. It's not really scary during the majority of the game, but it does have one level that scared me (and a bunch of other goons back when it was new and we had a megathread) to hell. I think the fact the majority of the game is not trying to be scary makes that part even better.

Also it's just a kickass game.

That level is called The Cradle. Thief 3 is really underrated, I think it gets overlooked since the first two were so incredible.

Do you have GTA IV? It's not as good as the earlier games in the series, in my opinion, but it's still definitely worth a play through, and you seem like to like sandbox games.

Also get Crackdown. It's kind of like Prototype, but with a better acrobatics system, and more focus on weapons than melee abilities (don't worry, though, you don't have to be good at shooters, most of your shooting will be auto-lock). If you've played Mercenaries, it's kind of similar in that your main objective is killing bosses, and killing the lieutenants and such under them makes those big boss fights easier.

Okay, I'm currently playing Menzoberrenzaaaaan or whatever the name is, which someone recommended for me. It's fun but loving unforgiving. It seems to use D&D rules, where the stats are all in some weird format like THESE PANTS ARE 10D7 AND THIS SWORD IS 1-5/2-7, tons of monsters can surround you out of goddamn nowhere at almost any point, and when you die you're loving dead for good. There are also like a ton of spells, but they're cut off by the screen so you have stuff like SPELL OF DETECT ..., and the manual doesn't list them so I can't check what they even do. gently caress the manual, it's a bastard and laid out in the most confusing way just to make me scan every inch of dense grey text to find out basic functions. CURE LIGHT WOU, I can figure out what that means and what effect it has, but what about AID or PRAYER? They're obviously cleric spells but beyond that who loving knows.

Other than that I'm kinda enjoying it. The writing is horribly 'fantasy' with lots of HOW DOST THOU FARE MY GOOD FRIEND, but crappy language aside it's really good, whoever penned it actually had a decent grasp of characterisation and such. I keep dying, which sucks, probably because I rolled a Thief and a Cleric (didn't really want a cleric but the chick in the surgical mask was too awesome). I figured I'd be picking up fighter npcs to make up for it now and then, but the guy from the starting village ain't such great shakes.

UU: Stygian Abyss is alright now I got it running but it does the crappy fantasy language without the advantage of good character dialogue. It's also a horrible loving maze and I keep drowning in the sewer runoff.

Anvil of Dawn has a way easier interface but less good story and more mazes to navigate. I also can't even pick my own character's name, there are 5 of them but they're pre-created. The little goblin, however, definitely has the most adorable face of the lot. I guess I'll stop playing once I get tired of locate-the-door-you-just-opened-with-the-floorswitch.

Lands of Lore I can't even play, after selecting my character it blacks out and never comes back. :(

Thanks gewns!

Burnout: Paradise is fantastic, so if you get a Burnout game, make it that one. Revenge is pretty good too and is probably $10-15 now, but Paradise has a lot more stuff to do. Fable 2 is fun so that's a good call too.

Fallout 3 is great if you don't have it for PC already, as are Mass Effect and Bioshock. Dead Space is great too, easily one of the best games I've played in the last few years.

Some of the arcade games are really good too, if you have a hard drive, and there are demos for all of them.

Seconding GTA IV just for the DLC. The Lost and Damned, starring a biker gang, replaces a lot of vanilla stuff with awesome versions i.e. combat shotgun. The upcoming Ballad of Gay Tony seems like it will work a lot of San Andreas in.

I'd also suggest Marvel Ultimate Alliance, because it's a fun pseudo RPG and you can find it for 5 bucks.

If you can hold off for a month, you can get Lost and Damned and the Ballad for $40 together on one disk, which saves you from buying vanilla GTA IV, which honestly isn't that great in comparison to the DLC.

Burnout Paradise is one of the strongest games on the platform. So I would recommend that. It's also, and I think without argument, the best supported game after release on the platform. They released an absolute ton of improvements with free DLC. Not fixes, but heaps of actual quality content.

What are some games where you start off with nothing, and you truly have to figure out everything for yourself - not just the game mechanics, but I mean the setting, how the world works, etc.

I always loved that about the Myst series - you had to do some serious, large-scale thinking and really figure out the world around you, instead of just solving lame puzzles.

I second (or third?) this request, again.
I've tried a few clones, but none have been able to go beyond rudimentary puzzles, and even then, they end up explaining the puzzle.
Let me see if I can explain better. In most of these games, the goal of each puzzle is to find the solution to it, usually some sort of color sequence or matching game. In the Myst puzzles, you don't even know what the puzzle is. You don't know what the category is, you don't know the solution. The tools to find the solution are also presented (so it's not a Guide Please), but they are not blatantly labeled "Solution to X". It is often presented as, say, a bit of research in the form of a table of values.
Let me know if we are thinking the same thing, Doc Iono

Notrium is a survival adventure game where you have to figure out lots of stuff by yourself. Not to the extent of Myth, but it's important stuff like where to find food, shelter and what makeshift items you can build out of spare parts. Also you need to do learn fast, otherwise you die.

From the HP:

quote:

You have crash-landed on planet Notrium. Your food supplies are running low, a pack of predatory aliens have got your scent. There are no more bullets for your pistol, your only weapon a handful of rocks. The night is coming, and you are desperately looking for wood to make a fire. Notrium is a game of Survival, Exploration and Action

An integral part of the game is finding enough food and supplies to survive through the cold, dark nights.

Exploring the alien ruins and bases you can find various items, which can be combined to make weapons and equipment.

Most of Notriums inhabitants are not happy to see you. You can try getting past your enemies quietly, but often you will need either fast legs or a sharp aim.

If you're not completely burnt out on Megaten after two Personas, you could go for Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne. It's harder than the Persona games, and not as nearly as cheery, but it's a great game that would give you a different take on the whole demon battling thing.

I have a request of my own, though I don't know if it has an answer: I stopped playing the Tony Hawk games after Underground 2. Recently I've been struck with the urge to revisit the series, but what I really want would basically be Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5. Erm, I forgot to mention that it's not a contemporary setting, but you've probably figured that out by now. It's sort of tongue-in-cheek fantasy with heavy political agendas. And the combat will be very dull after the Personas, but thankfully you won't really need to do it that much outside the 3 crappy dungeons. Plus there are so many ways to make gamebreaking amounts of money that you can just give everyone the best armour/runes instead of grinding much.

Do you have a 360? Shadow Complex is exactly what you're looking for and happens to be better than 75% of the full retail games.
