Genre irrelevant, PC preferred but other platforms may be considered if the game's awesome.

In The Last Federation you play as the last member of the Hydrals, a race of monstrous alien sea serpents. It's a pretty unique game where rather than controlling a space empire of your own, you manipulate various other alien races behind the scenes with the goal of uniting them all together in a federation. Lots of cool options, the different alien races you can manipulate all have their own unique quirks and characteristics, and it even has decent space combat. It's not exactly a straightforward game in the usual 4x mold, though, and may seem a bit byzantine at first (at least, it did to me), but if you're ok with that, it might be worth a look.

Sword of the Stars (not Sword of the Stars 2! It is horrifying.) has aliens that each has their own, very different approach to faster than light travel, along with being pretty alien themselves. I mean, Tarka are obvious rubber suit humans, but the Liir are peaceful psionic dolphins that go crazy and murderous when they are sent into space (this is the arm of the Liir civilization you control), the Hivers are an insectoid race that need to have their home world always accessible to everyone because if the queen doesn't get her pheromones out there the empire will fracture as new queens will emerge everywhere, and the Zuul are psychic marsupials that invade planets by dropping their young onto it so that they can feed from and kill everything there. It's a pity SotS2 sucks so bad because it added a playable machine race.

Then there's games where revealing that you play a very alien organism will spoil like the second to last plot twist of the game.

Maybe the Quantic Dream games? They're similar to Life is Strange. Indigo Prophecy / Fahrenheit , Heavy Rain and Beyond Two Souls .

I haven't played Beyond but Indigo was pretty good and Heavy Rain really got to me.

I know you said you didn't care about The Walking Dead series, and neither did I, but TWD Season One is really a masterpiece and definitely worth your time if you're digging Life is Strange. It has the same strengths of LiS in terms of having really involving + difficult characters, a compelling narrative that keeps upping the craziness with each episode, and choices that make you feel like poo poo no matter what (you know what I mean). It shows its seams in parts but overall it's just very tightly written and more about the characters than zombies.

LiS is really really really good. Walking Dead 1 is probably your best bet for the "oh poo poo" factor and emotional choices. Tales from the Borderlands is really good (so far...) but not in the same way - it's all action packed hilarity rather than difficult choices and emotions. Game of Thrones is kind of turning out to be a hastily churned out badly written cash-in fest :sigh:

The old half-life multiplayer mod The Specialists was basically The Matrix/Face Off/John Wick/etc The Game. There's a new Source version called Double Action Boogaloo for free on Steam, but it isn't quite as special as The Specialists was. That indie singleplayer time-based shooter SuperHot might hit the spot too.

I really enjoy turn based strategy games; Final Fantasy Tactics, X-Com, Advance Wars, games like that.

"Skulls of the Samurai" came out as a free game on Playstation Plus, just finished it and really enjoyed it but I'd never heard of it before so I'm wondering what other games might be out there that I haven't heard of that are of the same type of gameplay.

I own a playstation 3, 4, nintendo WiiU (which I don't think I've turned on more than once), an iphone and an ipad.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Fire Emblem? The Wii U has the GBA ones which I haven't played but are supposed to be good. I loved the 3DS one but it is a bit more modern. Same team that works on Advance Wars, but with RPG type units instead of disposable tanks.

Tactics Ogre for PSP is amazing, but without a PSP or Vita you'll have to emulate it. Again lots of crossover with the FF Tactics dev team.

I've heard of these two; I don't really use a PC so I can't emulate. I've been reading about Fire Emblem, though; I think what kept me away from it a few years ago was the fact that it follows a storyline and you can feel a bit lost if you jump into the middle of it, am I mis-remembering or should I be looking into starting the series from the beginning?

Thanks for the suggestions :) Anything more obscure that I might not have heard of? I wouldnt have even known skulls of the samurai existed if it didnt come as a free game and I was wondering what other games like it are out that I've just never heard of because they weren't widely released

fire emblem as a whole doesn't follow a single storyline. some games are related, but the one on the Wii U stands on it's own. well, technically it's the prequel to a japan only game, but this only matters in a small stinger scene at the very end of the game

One more question, which is similar to the above. Are there any games at all in the world that are similar to Ogre Battle March of the Black Queen? I've played (and enjoyed) the tactics-based ogre battle games that followed but MotBQ is so unique in its gameplay and I've never seen anything like it since. I asked this same question in a similar thread like 10 years ago and the general consensus was "no" but maybe something has come out since?

What keeps away most people from Fire Emblem is the perma death. If you lose a character in battle they're actually dead, so you either reset or just continue on one character down. Wii U lets you use savestates if you choose to so it shouldn't be a huge problem.

You can emulate PSP on iOS actually, but I have no idea how reliable it is. There used to be ways to do it without jailbreaking but they constantly patch them out.

Stuff more obscure... Maybe Banner Saga? It's on iOS, has an awesome art style, a kind of storybook look to everything. It's a kickstarter game with a like $200k budget. It'll be coming to PS4 eventually.

iOS also has Ravenmark which people seemed to like but personally I thought it just wasn't interesting enough.

On PS3 Valkyria Chronicles is an attempt to bring the grid based stuff to 3D free movement and was really unique, worth a look.

Generally, PC is your best platform for things like this, and they're usually older and don't take much horsepower to run. If that's an option, here's a few off the top of my head:

Jagged Alliance 2
Silent Storm
Telepath Tactics

Laser Squad Nemesis

Seconding that PC is the true home of this genre, and I bolded the games I've personally played and can especially recommend.

Some notes, though:
- Battle Brothers is going to receive a big update rather soon that will break savegames, so it's better to wait until that update is released. Very cool little game, though it can be brutally difficult.
- Jagged Alliance 2's UI can be really intimidating at first if you're not used to PC gaming. But it's pretty much one of the best games ever, so figuring it out is worth it.
- Silent Storm is probably the most easily approached of these (that I know of) and an excellent game as well.
- Xenonauts is a more faithful, old-fashioned reimagining of the old UFO: Enemy Unknown (or XCOM: UFO Defense in the US) than the recent XCOM from Firaxis. So comparing to the XCOM you mentioned, the premise is the exact same, but gameplay is somewhat different.

Man, I'd almost forgotten about Incubation. I played it once waaaaay back then and loved it, never tried it on a more modern computer.
