Recommend me something with an excellent crafting system (not a>b>c>d craft 1000 items MMO grinding system though). Bonus for post-apo or fantasy-medieval setting. And no, I'm not looking for an MMORPG.

VVV: Diablo is basically MMORPG in miniature, exactly the grindfest I hope to avoid. Plus, I hate the Diablo aesthetics.

Arcanum, maybe, or the Witcher. Haven't played either of those for any meaningful length of time but maybe someone can elaborate.

DayZ fulfills the first three points, but not the rest though. And if you think the Stalker UI was iffy you'll have fun with this one. Still, if you already have the Arma games why not give it a shot.

Do any of the driving games on sale have off-road type races(circuits/rallies) like Dirt, or is most of the fun derived from urban smashy-smashy?

Uh, wrong thread, but I guess I can ask here anyway. What's a game like Dirt 3 but has more locations, and less obnoxious "Yo bromigo hows about you upload your race to youtube in awesome 480p resolution?", and no drift-o events?

I'm doing research on how to handle swordplay in a first-person game. I know of Dark Messiah and The Elder Scrolls games, but are there any more games that prominently feature first-person melee combat?

Die by the Sword is a pretty old game that features pretty good sword combat. CLANG, the kickstarter funded game is one to watch.

Prototype, Arkham City, and other games like that (Just Cause comes to mind) are great fun but not really the climbing sort of game I'm looking for since they emphasize freedom of motion rather than "Here's a wall figure out how to get up it."

Have you tried the Thief series? It's a bit old now so there isn't any of that fancy ledge-shimmying, wallrunning action but it's pretty good for climbing poo poo and general exploration. I was also thinking of Jedi Knight Academy but that's probably too platformy.

The witcher series, pillars of eternity, the divinity series. Also shadowrun but that's got cyberpunk mixed in.

This probably isn't the right thread, but I haven't seen a "identify a game" thread so this seems close enough.

I'm trying remember what game a level is from and it's driving me nuts. It's from a shooter. I think it was semi linear but it might have been open world. it's fairly recent and came out in the past couple of years. You sneak into a place where some party/rave is going on by hitching a ride in the back of a truck. Then you sneak around behind the party and there is a bunch of hosed up stuff going on slavery/prostitution/torture or something like that...Then the bad guy finds you and you have to shoot your way out. I think it took place in a bunch of wooden shacks and you never actually enter the party.

Does this ring a bell?

Ronin's similar since it becomes sort of turn based once the action starts

Any recommendations for good detective games?

Obra Dinn was bar none the best detective game I have played and left me with an itch.
Disco Elysium was kind of detectivey too, which I enjoyed quite a bit.

Phoenix wright games were also great, the earlier entries better than the later, but still I played 1 through 6.

Hypnospace Outlaw and A Hand With Many Fingers both have a similar vibe of piecing things together yourself. AHWMF is only like an hour long. The Darkside Detective games are more traditional point and click games.

hungry for a lonely game. i want a game with as close to zero other characters as possible. spooky games sometimes fall into this and spooky is okay but it's not what i'm specifically after. ideally, i want to explore a place where people used to be and now they aren't. some games that have scratched this itch:

-- myst, all of them. plus several myst knockoffs like QUERN.
-- gone home and tacoma fit this too
-- the witness would fit this but i didn't like the gameplay
-- firewatch was almost there but had way too much dialogue
-- there's a lil indie game called Anemoiapolis that's basically liminal spaces: the game and i've never found a game that scratches this itch more.

anyway if anyone has any suggestions i will appreciate them. thanks and G*d bless.

I truly love the older X-Com games, they are among my favorites. UFO Unknown and Terror from the Deep especially, even if they are clunky and rough around the edges. The new X-Com games are great too but they have one feature that I really, really did not like.

Aliens getting a "free turn" when they first spot you and getting a free chance to move.

I am also not a big fan of how you get a "move" phase and an "action" phase instead of movement points. Less of a problem than the other issue above, though it bothered me also.

Which is to say that Xenonauts which is basically X-Com, but given better graphics and a UI is also one of my favorites. I am not aware of any similar games which really get the X-Com formula right but have not ruled out the possibility that they might exist! Can anyone recommend one?

What about tactical planning games like the old Rainbow Six / Ghost Recon, SWAT games, or Doorkickers.

I see there's GROUND BRANCH in development by the old RSix devs, and Door Kickers 2 is in early access, just found Phantom Brigade which is kinda similar I guess, anything else I missed?
