What's a good Action RPG? Ys is pretty awesome (especially Ys SEVEN) and I liked Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles back in the day, anything else good?

What are some good fantasy games that are like, a typical rpg world where you play a role other than the adventuring heroes? Like reccetear where you're playing an item shop manager and sell equipment to heroes, or crystal chronicles: my life as a king or majesty where you play as the king that sends heroes out on quests.

personally i prefer ES1's soundtrack, though ES2 is certainly the better game

(this is such a weird song in that it's the worst song on the soundtrack for like a minute and a half, and then becomes the best song on the soundtrack after that)

i haven't played the game but my knowledge of the series tells me that you'd have to be really generous with your definition of "porn game" to call it one

it's a fairly long running series too, so i dunno if it wouldn't be disqualified anyway due to your " don't have 20 odd titles in the series like, say, Final Fantasy" clause, though much like final fantasy every game in the series is standalone so that seems like an odd clause to have

"games from japan" is a pretty broad category. personally i'm not too big a fan of traditional jrpgs so i don't have many recommendations there, but if you're looking for some anime nonsense without anything creepy maybe give recettear a shot?

or any of the Ys games? that's less 20 games in the series and more 10 i think, though also like final fantasy or the tales of ____ series there's no reason for you to play numbers 1-5 if you just want to play #6 or whatever.

ninjewtsu
Oct 9, 2012

tales of games aren't porn but they are definitely as anime, if not more, than ys or final fantasy

maybe give earth defense force a look? it's less anime and more "lovely old godzilla movie" in aesthetic, though there's some obviously anime-inspired stuff in it.

cave story is an excellent game, and you can pay for it on steam or download the freeware version. i don't know how anime is too anime for you, but cave story is about as anime as i imagine snes games were. if you've already played it, kero blaster is available on steam and it is a good game made by the same dude.

half minute hero is a neat little thing as well

to be honest my steam game library doesn't have a ton of japanese developed games on it, so beyond this someone else'll have to help you

you can say "i don't like the anime artstyle" and it'll come off a little less dumb

dark souls is crazy anime but because the models don't have giant eyes you can't tell despite it lifting boss animations straight from famous manga panels

you're focusing on the whole anime aspect of it, if he were to say "I don't like that game because it looks too RTS-y" no one would bat an eye. but people sure do get defensive over their animu and mangoes

i've never heard someone say "that looks too RTS-y" or "that's too much RTS in the game for me" about a game before. usually it's a pretty binary "i don't like rts games" or "i do like rts games," there's not really shades of tolerance where someone says "that picture of unit selection is just crossing the line for me."

more to the point though, if it was a picture of catgirls or some poo poo i'd be more understanding, anime does often come with weird sometimes uncomfortable cliches, but "there's a picture of a child, HARD PASS" is kind of ridiculous.

you'll also note that i'm the one who suggested that perhaps a better way of phrasing what he means is "i don't like anime artstyle" and that that's not actually something he said. i'm not even sure that's accurate, considering he held up, uh, evangelion and nier automata as being ok.

slime rancher was fun for a while, but eventually i realized that i only had fun exploring the environment, while actually ranching slimes was mostly just tedious, brainless busywork

luckily, i realized around this same time that there's actually not much reason to spend more than a paltry amount of time on actually ranching the slimes, so i guess i'd second the recommendation? it's kinda weird that the slime ranching is the least fun part of slime rancher, if you're looking for something where the simulation/management aspect is interesting/engaging beyond cute visuals i'd say you should probably look for something else

the thing where there were no invisible walls or actual boundries and you could climb your way up on top of what would be the walls of the defined play area in any other game, and find hidden secrets there, was super cool and discovering/hunting down new slimes is always a joy

I really would like a building/economy game akin to Rimworld (not Dwarf Fortress please), with npcs who act autonomously and who do their own thing. Alternatively maybe an RPG or Tactical RPG with party members who act on their own. Something like Majesty 1+2 perhaps, where you are the mayor of a town and control heroes by setting rewards for certain quests. A game which allows you to control things on a grand scale, but without the need to micro-manage things.

During the steam sale, steam recommend a game called Rise to Ruin to me. I bought it because it was cheap and I had a simulation itch, and it's been pretty good for the 5 hours I've played of it. Maybe look at that?

i'm looking for a fantasy game where instead of being a hero going on an epic journey, you're more "a person living in the world," who's fulfilling some kind of specific role in society. that role can be "being a murderhobo" if murderhoboing is less "a plucky kid and his band of friends out to kill god" and more "a reasonable career path that many others have chosen." games i've played already that fit into what i'm looking for:

recettear
final fantasy tactics A2
most of the crystal chronicles games
majesty
graveyard keeper
rune factory

i already know moonlighter exists but i can't say the game interests me terribly (for reasons aside from the criteria i'm looking for here)

thanks for the recs guys, i appreciate it, though these recs are making me think i need to clarify what i'm looking for a bit better

so i'm not really looking for a game where thing like dialogue are nonexistent (there not being much to the "plot" is fine if there's still character interactions), and i brought up murderhobos not because i'm looking for that specifically, but because fantasy games like to put you in the role of a hero and that is one thing that can fit what i'm looking for, if murderhobo is like, a job you are employed in rather than a lifestyle you just sort of take up because being a farmer doesn't really work for the story the game is telling.

so like in tactics A2, while you are a murderhobo, you're part of an organized system of murderhobos (the clans), there are many other murderhobos out there that you'll never meet, and the average citizen interacts with murderhobos somewhat regularly. in this world, parents are hanging around thinking that it'd be just swell if their children took up the legitimate career of being a murderhobo if they have a natural knack for murderhoboing, and the majority of the game is you performing murderhobo tasks for townsfolk rather than being on some epic plot-driven quest

maybe the best way i can put it is, i'm looking for a game where you're playing as a person fulfilling some kind of job in a larger society, a job that just about anyone could consider taking up as their livelihood, and indeed there are probably other people in the world doing the exact same thing you are.

my life is depressing and i want to vicariously pretend i live in a world with dragons, but like a reasonable normal person in that world with dragons
