I think it comes from a digestion thing.
Being prey animals they are pretty finely tuned to run on next to nothing.
As such, they can't digest all the nutrients the first time round.

So they chow down for a second round, and then it's job done.
Quite smart really, if not a little gross. They poop out small wet ones at night time, have a nibble. Then they poop out the familiar pellets they are famous for.

This is both our cats. Molly is the black and white one and has the following issues:
*Creaks instead of meowing
*Is retarded
*Small head, huge body (can't really tell in this pic)
*Takes a dump and then stares at it instead of burying it.
*Crip Walks due to a bad front declaw

Mia is the grey and white one and is pretty cool.

it's sense of balance was off so when you picked it up it would keep it's legs straight

it also would meow and look at you sideways

ended up pulling a jewelry box on to itself

he was the coolest cat i've ever had the pleasure of knowing
