Ok I'm interested, he's taking on some absurdly grand project (something he seems to handle much better than chopping himself down to a single disc of material) and is giving this all away for free too. Whilst I'd much prefer if he said, "Ok gently caress it, I'm gonna rerecord Machina II so you can all finally hear that kickass album at a quality similar to Machina I" but a 44 track psychadelica project will do just fine too. I am a little concerned about how his vocals will sound however. His voice peaked with Machina, and on Zeitgist he sounded absolutely terrible in comparison, which is one of the main reasons I find the album so dire in the first place. Hopefully he sorts that out though. As a follow-up, I'd appreciate it if his next project was another cyber rock thing with him running around in a black cape looking like a vampire again, that poo poo was tight.

Why is it whenever an artist decides to do something with more than the standard amount of tracks people want them to release less music? If you like a band, why wouldn't you want them to release as much music as possible?

Melon Collie was a double album and some of his best work. Likewise Machina I and II were supposed to be one big double album and were freakin' awesome too so I think he does best when he goes off recording loads of music.

I'm hoping this is a return to form for him and that Zeitgist turns out to be a minor blemish on the shiney arse that is his career. The small little clips of Billy fretboard wanking on Twitter sounded pretty good, so here's hoping he does this right. Was there an actual date set in concrete for the first track? Edit: I was just on Youtube and heard a song called As Rome Burns. Where's this from? It's from live 08 concerts where he introduces it as a new song and it's really good, I'd like to hope that it will appear on Teargarden by Kaleidyscope but it's not psychadelic at all. Yeah, if Machina II had recieved proper production I'd just listen to that and the original Machina as a double album (the way they were intended). I think it's a real shame that never happened, since I think a Machina I&II double album would have been my favourite work by them. I doubt we'd ever get a rerecording of Machina II either unfortunately, and even if we did it would most likely suck now since Billy's production would ruin any potential it had

All my complaints with Zeitgeist are related to Billy's voice. As soon as I heard the album for the first time and Doomsday Clock kicked off I was thinking "Oh, this sounds good..." and then Billy's voice came on and my thoughts changed to "Why's he talking instead of singing?!" which persisted for the duration of my listen to the album. I dunno if he just can't sing how he used to anymore (which the new material kinda suggests) but it's a shame, the right vocals would have made Zeitgeist much more enjoyable for me. Also the goofy black and white stripes with white cape outfits were insanely retarded. Wasn't so bad when he went back to wearing some weird black skirt and playing stuff like As Rome Burns and Superchrist later on in the tour though, at that point they kinda started to regain the Smashing Pumpkins greatness. ..and then Jimmy left

I will say, without going into any unnecessary details that this represents a positive move forward for me. I can no longer commit all of my energy into something that I don’t fully possess. I won’t pretend I’m into something I’m not. I won’t do it to myself, you the fan, or my former partner. I can’t just, “Cash the check” so to speak. Music is my life. It is sacred. It deserves the highest commitment at every level and the Pumpkins are certainly no different. I’m sorry but it really IS that simple. There is no drama, bad blood, or anything else but a full commitment to music. My best goes out to Billy and I’m glad he has chosen to continue under the name. It is his right. I will continue to make music with the Jimmy Chamberlin Complex as well as pursuing other musical interests. I feel that I have a long way to go and a lot to give. Thanks to everyone for your kind words and support through all of this. I am constantly humbled by all of you! It is an honor and a privilege to play music for a living and I don’t take it for granted not even for a second. Seems like creative differences and he didn't like the direction the Pumpkins were heading in. It gives the impression he thinks Billy has sold out maybe, but then again Chamberlin's new project is 'progressive, symphonic pop'

Tarantula was weird as gently caress because it was rocking, Billy was wearing a cape, he played an awesome solo, he shot lasers from his eyes and it even had a really nice Siamese Dream-y quiet section and was basically everything fans were hoping for from new SP, and yeah the album came and ruined things quite brutally. First time I listened to the album though I was totally pumped for like, the first 25 seconds. I just thought it sounded awesome and Pumpkins were back and rocking hard (even if the production on the drums sounded very tinny and St.Anger-ish) but then Billy started singing, and everything went downhill

Wow he really has turned into a tremendous douchebag. Also, he's claiming that he fired Jimmy from the Pumpkins in '09? I was wondering what actually happened there with Jimmy leaving but Billy doesn't say why he fired him at all, it's kinda weird. Also apparently when they originally split after Machina, Jimmy still had drug problems? What?! For all the craziness though he's right, he should have just kicked Iha out after Machina and carried on with Melissa and Jimmy and hired a new guitarist, we'd probably still be getting good albums (and a properly produced Machina II

Space Cadet posted:As a fairly forgiving fan, lover of Zwan, and occasionally his solo album I can safely say that he suffered a debilitating stroke mere hours after Song for a Son was released. It is really tragic that those mercinary musicians that currently call themselves the Smashing Pumpkins are clearly taking whatever material Billy had recorded over the years prior to becoming aphasic and are trying to hammer an album out of poo poo in order to try and make some money. The Corgan that goes on tour is simply his body being used as a marionette while a recording plays, a fate crueller than death. The SP on tour is still just as good as ever in my opinion, it's just that for some reason the studio SP is completely different and when they leave the stage they somehow leave all the talent up there too. I mean really, this is all post-Zetigeist material that kicks rear end, Billy still has awesome things in him but it just becomes poo poo when recorded for some reason (or they don't record it at all). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aajvG_qUJQg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrXd7JkfQpE

I can understand his wanting to continue to evolve because really, Siamese Dream to Melon Collie to Adore to Machina was an incredible run of 4 mindblowingly good albums (5 if you count Machina II which was incredible save for the shoddy recording quality) that were all an evolution of sound and not clinging to or lingering on something he did a long time ago, which gets my respect at least. I think the main problem is that from Zeitgeist and onwards, his music has had some absolutely horrificly bad production and mastering that just ruins everything. I mean straight away the first track on Zeitgeist has a godawful tinny sound, hosed-up sounding snare drums and Billy's vocals sound like they decided to keep the first take and raise the volume higher than everything else. It also doesn't help that he genuinely sounds bored a lot of the time rather than actually attempting to sing properly. I think if Zeitgeist had the production of Machina it would have been a genuinely good album, you can tell that a lot of the songs are good (only real exception being That's The Way My Love Is), they just need to be recorded properly. It's frustrating since any good Teargarden material will almost certainly suffer the same fate.

As for something like Mellon Collie, I'm not sure how many people here would agree but I'm of the opinion that Machina I and Machina II are basically Mellon Collie part 2. The difference being Machina II was never officially released in physical format and the recording quality is quite bad. I think when you combine both Machina I and II though, you end up with an album that's just as good as Mellon Collie and it's a tragedy that Billie never got to release it as intended (it would have been the Pumpkins' second double album). I think Machina I and II would probably stand the test of time much better than Mellon Collie too, provided II had been recorded properly

I just wish Billy would start rocking out again. A prime example of this would be As Rome Burns, which proves he's still got it, but instead he's just kinda farting about. I mean since the Smashing Pumpkins got back together (just before Zeitgeist) they have written enough new songs to make a really good album. The problem though is that some of them are live-only, or weren't put on their commercial releases, or were just really badly mixed/produced on Zeitgeist/Teargarden/etc. I think if they took all the good material they've written since getting back together and actually recorded it properly they'd have an excellent album, it's really frustrating that it'll never happen

Did anybody see their performance at Rock in Rio the other day? YouTube was streaming and it was actually painful to watch. They ran through a lot of their big hits and after each song there wasn't any applause or anything (the crowd was going crazy for every other band though) and it was utterly bizarre to watch. This is the same crowd that knew the lyrics to Metallica tunes from the 80's and loved Linkin Park so it was just odd seeing SP come on as the final act one night and the crowd seemed to not have a clue who they were or like them at all.

I kind of agree except that I think Machina I and II (save for the latters poor quality) are actually really great albums Regarding whether Billy has lost it or not, this is gonna sound weird coming from someone who doesn't like Zeitgeist/Teargarden/Oceania but I really don't think he has at all. I think that since the Pumpkins reformed, he has written songs here and there throughout this period that have either been recorded poorly, or have been stuck on EPs or just songs that he's only played live, that if he put them all together would make for an absolutely phenomenal album that would stand up there alongside the rest of the best Pumpkins material. It's really frustrating actually I think

What's the general consensus on the Siamese Dream and Pisces Iscariot reissues? I heard that the Siamese Dream one is great and the remastering is brilliant, but I think I recall some people saying that they really hosed up with Pisces Iscariot somehow? For what it's worth, I have no interest in the b-sides and bonus content at all, I just want the best quality editions of those two albums and the idea of them being remastered sounds very promising to me. This is fantastic news ![]() I'm also interested to see what the 64 b-sides will be. I'm really hoping it collects all the songs from the singles of that era rather than just obscure demos and stuff. On that note, I'm also really hoping that the Adore reissue contains Eye and the songs from the End Is The Beginning Is The End single, and that Machina features the Untitled single as one of the bonus songs as well. Alternatively they could reissue Machina as the double album it was originally intended to be, I'm so excited to hear all the Machina II songs with proper mastering and production

Platypus Farm posted:Yeah, fully produced versions of Let Me Give The World To You (hopefully also the solo acoustic version), Slow Dawn, etc. is going to be fantastic. I think that Machina I & II if produced a little less Billy-in-the-front-party-in-the-back and also with some reconsiderations for what songs to include in the main album and what should be B-sides could make one hell of a great record. Well, I mean it does, because I can do most of that myself. I know that I'm probably alone in this, but I really love the wall of sound style of production for Machina (if that's the right term?). Maybe it's just nostalgia because I snagged a copy of Machina along with NIN's The Fragile for my birthday 12 years ago, but I really like the production on them both. I hope that for the Machina reissue, that they leave the album mostly untouched and just spend a lot of time cleaning up the poor Machina II recordings and layer the songs up with everything that was originally planned for them. I suppose it might be too much of an undertaking for a reissue since it would require going into the studio and actively working on the material and recording more stuff for it, but I think it would be really neat. Speaking of which actually, given that they've managed to get Gish, Siamese Dream, Pisces Iscariot and Mellon Collie all out this year (I thought they originally planned only one or two reissues a year?!) I'm curious to see if we'll get both Adore and Machina in the first half of 2013? I'm really curious as well to see if they do Machina I and II as the same reissue, or they actually do something separate for Machina II. Baron von Eevl posted:But that's already on the TAFH box!
