There's actually two festivals at Cannstatter Wasen each year - the Volksfest (which is the bigger one) in late September/early October and the Frühlingsfest in late April/early May. They're set up pretty much the same way, the Volksfest just has a little more of everything. When compared to the Octoberfest, the Wasen fairs are a little more focused on the rides and less on the huge festival tents - which is not to say that there aren't plenty of beer tents, but Munich definitely got the edge when it comes to the folksy part.
