I've had an unlocked 2G (original) iPhone on AT&T for over a year now without a contract or data plan. If I decide I finally want to go legit and add the data plan, can I just start paying $20 more a month but still not be under contract?

Hmm, I did some international travel recently, and I added the 20mb int'l data plan coverage. I think they prorated it though (I added it a week or so into the month), because it currently shows online that I used 23mb of data, which is showing an overage of 8mb or so. Two questions: a) Can I get that NOT prorated for the full month if I go to my ATT store? I mean, first off, prorating is stupid because I just want the full 20mb as I was only there for a week. This would drop my overage to 3mb or so. b) it says my overage charge is $0.005, which is per kb I assume? so it's $5/mb over overage charges, so I'm currently looking at $40+ over overage charges, yes?

I don't even think we have the option to add the original iPhone plan in the store. You might have to do it through iTunes. Either way, just changing the equipment on your line doesn't affect your contract.

Snooper picks up what phone the customer has. So its possibly they may check, but they cant add a 30 dollar a month feature without the customers concent. thats slamming, and its a huge no no that at&t dont approve of. You should know this. its the same thing as the blackjack2 getting medianet added instead of pda personal. Reps are retards in alot of places, and they added the wrong data plan for years, at&t said "wtf", and reps STILL dont think its a smart phone and add medianet. Same deal with the new PDA policy. If its bought FROM AT&T AS AN UPGRADE OR NEW LINE itll get stuck with data. If its bought no commitment or ebay, they wont say or do poo poo.

I know that reps definitely aren't allowed to add the data feature just because they notice there's a smartphone listed on the account. The Wireless Service Agreement you sign when you activate your phone, however, says this: AT&T posted:Data Plans: An eligible data plan is required for certain devices, including iPhones and other designated Smartphones and PDAs. Eligible data plans cover data usage in the U.S. and do not cover international data usage and charges. If it is determined that you are using an iPhone or other designated Smartphone or PDA without an eligible data plan, AT&T reserves the right to add an eligible data plan to your account and bill you the appropriate monthly fee. So while reps aren't going to start slamming lines with $30 data features, AT&T, as a company, may start exercising that right. The procedure for changing a main line takes about 5 seconds. Also, I thought I would weigh in about smartphones and data plans but it's the level of enforcement that is hard to determine at the moment. At this point I would say don't expect to be able to convince any reps to set you up with a PDA in the system without them tossing on the data plan but I wouldn't worry about system sweeps and all that jazz since the iPhone ones didn't seem to do anything at all other than stop the Internet from working if your IMEI in the billing system was an iPhone but you didn't have the data plan.

The price you're getting for that main line is based on your 3 month average revenue for that number. That is in most cases. Changing the main line to a different number wouldn't boost up the "ARPU" of that line so pricing would still be whatever it was before it was the main line.

Another related question. Can't I just order the phone for the main line and then swap sim cards? The only holdup I can think of is that our main line is like 5 years old, so they'll probably ship us a new one...could I just put that new one in the old phone and then put the sim card from the line I really want to upgrade into the new phone? The sim card from the line I really want to upgrade is fairly new.

Good morning AT&Trs. I have a decent 19% discount through the company that I work for on my iPhone plan and am considering getting my wife an iPhone for the holidays and add it to my plan. Can I buy the iPhone at the Apple Store or AT&T store and get it added without any hassles or losing discounts on one or the other or do I need to go through the online store that I purchased mine from? I figure that I can, but just wanted to avoid a headache if there was a non-obvious obstacle. Thanks!

The Wireless Service Agreement you sign when you activate your phone, however, says this: I got confirmation about the whole thing. Ended up having to go up the chain near to vpgm, but got a real answer. The ONLY phone they are "sweeping" data plans on (unless bought with a 2 year contract) is the iPhone (Note, it may be possible to get around that as well but thats still in the air). Thats it. SO, If you buy an unlocked or even AT&T branded Tilt2, or any other PDA phone, So long as you DONT sign a contract (or buy it in a corp retail location) for it to get a discounted price, you dont have to have a data plan. They will NOT sweep you for simply putting your sim card in. Warning. If you REPORT your new imei, theres a chance itll pop up with the proper device, which means popped with a data plan. So in short, Buy the phones off ebay, slap your sim in them, and dont update your imei. TraderStav posted:Good morning AT&Trs. Hoping someone here can give me some options/ideas. Currently on tmobile with 5 lines, myself/wife/mom/brother/sister. Family plan consisting of 1000 minutes, unlimited messaging on all lines, and the tmobile $10 data plan on 2 lines. Our normal bill if no one goes over our minutes is around $160. Mom and brother usually pay me around $30/mnth for their share of the bill. Both my wife and I have iphones and we'd like to keep them/get new ones if we switched to at&t. I think I've priced out the correct plan on at&t but see if I can do better. Plan: Nation 1400 FamilyTalk w/Rollover® Minutes - $89.99 Services: Data Plan for iPhone - $30.00x2 Messaging Unlimited for Families - $30.00 Plan: AT&T Nation FamilyTalk 1400 - Additional Line - $9.99x3 For a grand total of $210/mnth not including taxes which I'm sure is another $10-$20, so let's call it $230/mnth. Assuming my mom/brother still pay their normal $60/mnth that brings the plan down to $170/mnth but with the added benefit of 400 more minutes, rollover minutes, and real 3G speeds for our iphones. Can I do any better? Are there any deals that could waive the 9.99 additional lines or anything? If in the future is it possible to add another iphone assuming my brother may want one eventually?

Thanks for the feedback on this, just got her iPhone added up an hour ago. I did that and all is well but they told me that the FAN discount can only apply to my line and not hers so I am not thrilled with that. I have to take a look at the first bill to see what got the discount and what didn't but thought they would have applied the FAN to the balance and not just one phone, quite irritating. Especially since she is eligible for the exact same FAN.

All this talk of sweeps has got me worried, because I'm going to be signing up for a FamilyTalk plan at the end of this month with my family next month (porting from Sprint) with 4 lines, and one of them is going to be an unlocked iPhone 2G purchased on SA-Mart. I have purchased and unlocked an iPhone 2G to be used on one of the lines because my mom wants the iPhone but doesn't need a data plan. So I was planning on getting just a free phone or whatever from the AT&T Store and then swapping her SIM into the unlocked iPhone so she doesn't have to pay data by buying an iPhone in-store. Are they going to somehow find out there is an iPhone 2G on the account and force her to start paying data on it? This worries me, and would be complete bullshit if true. Another question - can only one discount be applied to a FamilyTalk plan? I have a discount through my University and another person on the account has a discount through his company, can we add both? Or can only the main account holder's discount be applied to the plan? I'm curious how this works. Thanks!
