Sooo I returned that 4S and got a Note to tide me over. I must say, even though this thing is mega huge, it's pretty awesome. Also, LTE speeds here in Charlotte, NC (at least where I live) are insanely fast. Averaging 28mbps/19mbps on speed tests.

I'm loving the Note. I'm impatient for ICS, and knowing Samsung, the bastards may never release it. I don't feel like rooting the phone, but I really may have no choice. Also bonus for walking into an AT&T store with a work ID, and walking out with a 20% monthly discount. Added bonus of complaining to the rep the whole time about AT&T's pricing and bullshit unlimited, $20 text messaging, while he spent 10 mins going through the computer finding me the best discount he could. I'm such a dick.

I don't however know if that applies to every carry around the world as this was posted to a Israel carriers fbook page. Edit: apparently I didn't read the entire thing this morning, USA customers have to wait longer.

I'm on a family plan with my parents right now, but all of us are out of contract. My mom really wants to get an iPhone 4S. I'm considering getting one, or maybe waiting for a Lumia 900. I'm going with my mom to an AT&T store tomorrow; any idea what kind of deals we could get, or suggestions on what to say to make out the best we can?

So I dropped into my friendly ATT store today to inquire about possibly giving up my "unlimited" data plan for the 5 gig w/tethering but chickened out. I may get the Lumia 900 when it lands but struggle with paying $50 for 5 gigs when I can have the same for $30 w/o tethering. How slow do the throttled speeds go with an LTE plan? Down to 3g or edge like HSDPA throttling? The guy at the store had no clue. If the 4g throttling is as molasses slow as the normal throttling I may just go the 5gig route.

So, I went into a corp store last week and got a 4S to sell on ebay. The guy helping me accidentally removed my MediNet Unlimited plan and added an iPhone data plan. He needed a manager to fix it, and for some reason he couldn't do it until the next day. So I checked later the next day and found that they had indeed fixed it and I was back on MediaNet Unlimited. Fast-forward to this morning and, after using MediaNet Unlimited for many years with all sorts of smartphones, I got a text saying that I was being switched over to a $30/month limited data plan for smartphones. I find it pretty coincidental that after using this fine for years, I get switched right after the fuckery with my account in the corp store. I guess I'm screwed here?

So they switched you from an unlimited Medianet plan to an unlimited iphone data plan and when you told them to fix it they did and then pushed you to a 3GB Smartphone plan? Check your account and see if it shows your account using a 4S or not. Afaik, the medianet unlimited was for feature/dumb phones only and it's probable that the switch was automated through the system because it saw you were using a 4S now.

Today it got switched to the DataPro 3GB $30 plan because AT&T says I require it.

I blew an upgrade on the Galaxy Note and their system shows me on a GNote with some "smartphone unlimited" data plan that isn't in any of their options. Obviously because you can't buy it anymore. It used to say iphone unlimited until I got the note. It's only $30 dollars a month, but I guess now it's basically like getting a 5GB plan for cheaper and with 0 overage charges. Wasn't the medianet unlimited $20 dollar plan for dumbphones? They should be able to switch you to the $30 unlimited I think. Just make a big deal out of it.

ExcessBLarg! posted:One of the stipulations I think all the carriers have is that, in order to use a subsidized upgrade on a smartphone, you have to carry a smartphone-compatible data plan throughout the duration of the contract period. There really wouldn't be a way to make up the subsidy otherwise. That's a good guess, where have you seen that in writing? It almost certainly has more to do with smartphones with their potential capabilities and the resources used on the network. A rudimentary analogy would be that both bicycles and cars use the road, but you pay taxes on the car because of their impact.

AT&T posted:2-yr voice agreement with qualifying monthly data plan required. obeyasia posted:It almost certainly has more to do with smartphones with their potential capabilities and the resources used on the network. What it really comes down to is that AT&T spends far more on smartphone subsidies than dumbphones. Compare their retail prices. Or alternatively, consider that the starting ETF amount for an "Advanced" (smartphone) device is $325, while a "Standard" (dumbphone) is $150. In short, AT&T needs to collect at least $8/mo more per-smartphone subscription than a comparable dumbphone subscription. In the old days, that translates to the $10/mo smartphone data premium ($30/mo unlimited vs $20/mo unlimited) rather nicely. Of course, tiers do complicate the matter, but it doesn't change that AT&T has to extract a greater monthly fee from smartphone users than dumbphone users to break even on subsidies. EbolaIvory posted:We dont contract features. So no. If that's the case, then I guess it is different from how T-Mo does it. Two questions. If I move my parents over to AT&T on a new account is there any way to sneak my corporate discount onto their plan without me being the account owner? Since I just also moved my family over they won't let me open a second account yet. Same last name and that's the only identifiable part of my e-mail address, so I'm thinking there's probably a sneaky way to do this?vvvv Oh I think this was answered while i was posting. Number two is if I set my Dad up on a Titan and he refuses to become smart enough to learn a smartphone, can I just put him on a gophone and ditch the data plan without issue? Or does the new contract require two years worth of a data plan as well? OldPueblo fucked around with this message at Mar 7, 2012 around 18:51 |

But contracted smartphone customers aren't required to maintain some data plan throughout the duration of the contract, even if they don't keep the device? Correct. You can have a dumbphone, upgrade to an iPhone, switch the hardware back to dumbphone and continue with no data plan at all. Unless you're using the device, we dont contract features, and data is a feature. Your ETF is 350 instead of 175 or whatever, Thats the difference, and thats it. OldPueblo posted:Two questions. I smashed my AT&T iPhone4 and I'm exploring my options. I'm not really interested in attempting to replace the screen, since that looks like a huge hassle. I'm confused by this upgrade subsidy that people are mentioning. Does it change when the contract expires? My contract isn't up until June, and the prices I'm seeing on ATT's site are identical for upgrade and new contract. Should I just hang onto my busted phone for a few months if I'm thinking of just going to the 4S or Galaxy Note?
