So I take it there's a healthy second-hand market. Any tips on what they run (black 4, 16gb), and prepping the phone for handoff? Do I need to pull the SIM? Is there a recommended wipe procedure?

When you say the screen is broken, do you mean you can't see anything on the display, or that the glass in front of the display is cracked?
|

Just the glass. The display itself seems fine, but it's tough to tell if there are dead pixels through the shattered glass. Edit: Disposing of my damaged phone is just part of my problem though. I hear this talk of an upgrade subsidy, but I still don't understand the rules and limits. I'm eligible for an upgrade according to the *639# response, but the prices of the phones I'm seeing are the same as if I'm starting a new account, both at AT&T or any other provider. I'd expect AT&T to attempt to keep me as a customer with a discount, but they're not. deck fucked around with this message at Mar 11, 2012 around 08:06 |

And the galaxy note (especially on ATT) is meh, if you are thinking of an iPhone get the iPhone. Edit: and ATT cares more about new customers than current just fyi. Either way, apple sets the price of the iPhone so its a moot point.

Yeah, if you want the best deals for upgrading, use Amazon Wireless: http://wireless.amazon.com/ They offer the best prices for upgrades, far beating AT&T's own pricing. Of course, the catch is that you have to agree to an additional Amazon ETF (another $250) if you cancel service before 6 months has gone by. But if you're planning on remaining an AT&T customer, there's no disadvantage to using Amazon and you get much lower pricing.

I am still considering getting an Iphone 4s or a Galaxy Note. Is it better to go contract? I have a company discount, which doesnt work on the 3gig personal data. But, its still 23% off the main contract, so $60.49 per month. Or would it be a better idea to get an unlocked Note or Iphone 4s and do month to month? Or, for 68.49 i can get the 5gb data. So many decisions! Really trying to figure out which one i want, but with rumors spreading about Samsung possibly nixing the Note's upgrade to ICS im a bit leery about buying until i hear for sure whats going on with it.

If you're not satisfied with the note exactly as it ships, choose the iPhone. I have one, and my wife has an iPhone. The note is really nice, but the iPhone is a better PHONE. The note is a better toy/PDA/bookreader(oh god kindle is so nice). oh and it can make phone calls.

I use my note a lot more for messing around with work crap. The note is awesome, I love it. It's just so drat huge. Maybe the HTC One X will be better, cuz I don't think I can give up LTE speed now. Also, who the hell said the note's ICS upgrade was being nixed? thats a bullshit rumor.

So there's an $18 fee for "Transfer of Billing Responsibility" on the phone, but not online, and the CS person tells me this only after I already talked to her for 10 minutes and I can't imagine that me doing it online at that point is actually saving anyone money. And I still wasn't able to find the online page for that without just using Google, so good job on that. And then as a kicker, all the features get removed from the line, which wouldn't be so bad except that AT&T keeps removing plans over time so there is no texting plan now except unlimited, WTF. And the unlimited iPhone data plan gets lost too, although that isn't as big a deal because this phone gets used for 500 MB of data at most, not like there is a good plan for that either. Argh. (I do like how the AT&T website lets you just say "I am the person whose name is on the bill" and provide their last-4 SSN digits, and then you can act as the account owner. It even sends your phone (not theirs) the authorization code. Funny considering how anal the in-store people are about account owners being present and such.)

The first is that there's a device coming out in the next couple of months that you're really interested, so you want to hold your upgrade until then. The second is that you're uncertain how long you're going to remain a customer, and don't want to deal with the possibility of a (prorated) ETF if you decide to leave early. grimcreaper posted:Or would it be a better idea to get an unlocked Note or Iphone 4s and do month to month? There's also the option of getting an "unlocked" GSM/UMTS Galaxy Nexus if you want something that's bigger than an iPhone and has a good upgrade outlook. In that case, or in the case of picking up the international Note, you'll save some money by getting an iPhone 4S on contract and flipping it. Unless money isn't a concern and you don't want to bother with the hassle.

CoasterMaster posted:Have you tried doing this in store? I did a transfer about a year-and-a-half ago and I was able to keep my unlimited iPhone data plan. Good question. In-store, they would only do the transfer if all three people were in the store (both account owners and the owner of the number in question), so that wasn't going to happen. On the phone, they explicitly told us we would lose the current data plan if we moved it over. Maybe we could go back into the store and get it added back, but honestly I don't care... it's not my phone, and it's $30 either way and can't really use above 3 GB anyways. I guess AT&T's throttling is actually pretty effective.

I just switched five people over to AT&T and stipulated that I wanted no contracts at all. I would be just month to month until the 900's came out, and then I'd choose a contract or not depending on the price. The last thing we did was add my fan discount and then I was on my way. Later I learned that adding the fan actually put them all on contract, it's a requirement for a fan. So I had them remove the fan for now. While we're on the subject of shadiness or whatever, I went into a store to ask a policy question and mentioned that I wanted to get the titan for a penny but would have to wait on shipping. She said they could do it in the store but I had to buy a bunch of accessories to justify it to her manager. I didn't do it (parents weren't ready) but I wondered if that was actually a REAL requirement or not.

EbolaIvory, when customer reps say they can put a price in the "notes", are they just full of crap? I had called last week to find out what my ETF was if I swapped over to Verizon to pick up two $99 Galaxy Nexus phones, and after talking, they said that they could get me a Galaxy Note for $199 (after bringing down the price of the phone and adding some other type of customer discount). All I had to do was mention that it was in the notes and I could call back and get it. So I check out the Nexus, and they're nice, but I figure I'd just stick with the Note. I call back today and they send me from Enterprise customer care to retentions, and now they say all they can do is get me the Note for $279. No other discounts. It'll cost me around $245 to get out of my wife's contract and another $200 for the phones to move to Verizon, but I'm almost seriously considering it. Are they stringing me along, or is there pretty much nothing they can do?

We wont price match online pricing unless it makes business sense for us at retail. Its not every Fan, but alot of them do force contracts on new activations. Now for what its worth, if you add the lines, THEN add the fan, it shouldnt "resign" any contracts. Despite the fact that I've been an account holder with more than one line for a few years, paying full retail on an ipad2 (with plan) and the wife was on her own contract before I merged her account with mine, I would hope there would be a little room for movement.
