![]() Prototype is a game about an ultra-powered jerkhole who runs around Manhattan while the military slaughters plague-ridden citizens in the streets. It's a lot of fun. The Powers Your character, Alex Mercer, is infected with the virus codenamed "Blacklight". It enables him to break science in many entertaining ways. He can manifest offensive and defensive items, like claws and shields. He can absorb humans into his body, stealing their memory and appearance. Super strength and super agility are part of the package. He can also parkour on anything, run up sheer vertical surfaces, and fly. There are more complicated moves available, most of which involve the application of devastating force on a single human target which could easily be killed by the most basic punching attack. Some these advanced moves require you to mash several buttons in sequence, so people tend to complain about the controls. Whatever. I've played worse. The Plot This game uses a storytelling method that is very complicated, but also very simple. Cutscenes are mostly shown out of order, letting you see the past or the future of the plotline. Most of the backstory is told through the Web of Intrigue, a collection of 131 short movies. It's a complete mess, and the game makes no effort to clean it up for you. Many players, upon finishing the game, had no idea who the final boss was. We'll just try to explain things as we play through the game. The HD Videos We're putting these videos on Youtube to use the HD feature. This allows us to give you videos in 720P, which is an unprecedented amount of P. Enjoy the P. If you have trouble watching the HD videos: A. Wait for the video to load before watching it B. Use KeepVid.com to download the video C. Don't watch the video in HD If your processor can't quite handle the video, you can get better performance by downloading it and watching it in a real video playing program instead of a web browser. VLC, Media Player Classic Home Cinema, MPUI-hcb, and KMPlayer are all fine choices for playing back the videos you get from KeepVid.com. If you have a netbook with an Intel Atom processor, you can play back 720P video if you have the right program. First, download MPUI-hcb and install it. Then, download these files and unzip them into c:\program files\MPUI, overwriting mplayer.exe and the config file. The result is a nice video player that manages smooth playback of 720P video on my Acer Aspire One. Fuzzy Pipe Wrench posted:Weren't there plans for some account type or another being able to post videos longer than 10 minutes back? They had the special account available as an option ("Director" I think) a long while back, but at some point they decided to stop giving that functionality. Those who got it when it was available still have it, but being a Director now just does nothing but give you that tag. There's no way to get that ability now if you didn't get it back then.

Maxwell, can you please reupload your videos to Viddler. Especially the Overlord and Majora Mask. I know you said that you are growing tired of Viddler, but the "Download Source" option is a must.

How does the PC version of Prototype compare to some other console port PC titles? I've noticed a lot other console to PC titles tend to really get badly done like Ghostbusters, Assassin's Creed, Grand Theft Auto IV and somewhat BioShock (though maybe it's the Unreal engine that fucks that game up).

Also, you can always find other means of downloading those videos, if one was so inclined.

Its not bad. It really needs a higher end machine in the more hectic areas of the game, but I was able to run it competantly on a new machine with a slightly out of date graphics card. Just a couple times it has crashed on me. It also has good support for the 360 controller which is the prefered controller for this type of game, though I haven't been arsed to buy one yet. There is also no bullshit mandatory signup of GFWL to be able to save a singleplayer game, which is my one gripe with Batman:Arkham Asylum(PC).

It's the same with Resident Evil 5 for PC and for some reason GFWL slows down the loading up of games when you open. At least there was a mod to remove it in Fallout 3.

I thought it was a very well done port. It's definitely a better port than Assassin's Creed or gta4 (gently caress rgsc/gwl). The only issues I noticed were a lack of proper tank controls (which aren't a big deal since you only have to use a tank like twice), an excessive number of prompts (are you really sure you want to start/save/load/quit), and a minimal number of settings/options. It seemed to run very well too. I was using an AMDX2 4400+, 2gb ram, and an ati x1900xtx with most of the settings at medium-high at a good resolution and I never noticed the frame rate being lovely. Mouse/keyboard works fine and I don't know why anyone would use a controller but the option is there. My pinky got a bit tired holding shift down all the time but I probably could have bound that to a different key and it wouldn't have been so bad. Maybe it didn't let me bind sprint to mouse 5 but it's easy to get around that so whatever.

The problem being, when they get onto a jag of ads before videos, it's always the same drat ad for about two weeks. They don't mix it up at all.

Incidentally, if you want to play Prototype, but you A: don't have a current-gen console, B: don't have enough money for such a recent game, or C: would rather play as a more likable and sympathetic character like, say, the Hulk, I'd suggest Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction Radical's previous foray into superhero sandbox games. There's a little bit less to do, but really, its pretty much just as fun to play as Prototype, plus cheaper. Also before we even get to that video, I am going to point out that George Lucas did NOT create Howard the Duck and you all deserve to be drawn and quartered for insinuating such a thing. But still, the game was a lot of fun when it was just about the hulk smashing puny humans. Actually, I have the same attitude towards prototype but at least prototype was polite enough to give you a "win" button in the form of that charged jumping blade downslash to kill the more annoying enemies. Also I just watched the second prototype video and noticed that Ferr already noticed that Alex has a poo stain on his pants. I thought I was so clever for seeing it
