I ask because the font used in PSZ and a ton of other DS games (Atlus stuff, mostly) uses the same font with the squished M/N letters that's kinda annoying to read but it's in so many games that I figure it's part of the SDK or something. Either way, cool to know this was one of your jobs, played the poo poo out of DQIII on GBC back in the day.

All the menus and system-related stuff, and all the missions.

I usually stick close to the original JP text and won't stray from it too far for the sake of cracking a joke. I'll write gags if they fall within the context of the original meaning, but won't stray if it means risking the ire of editors/clients. It's pretty restrictive, but it's still possible to have fun with characterizations and wording.

Chiming in as someone who bought it from Play-Asia (Japanese copy). The gameplay is pretty solid, some of the targetting is a bit off but if you played (and loved!) PSO, it'll feel just the same. The combo system is just like the old one, you get used to it in time and based on the weapon. The story is kinda bleh, enough that you know what's going on even if you can't read it, but that's not why we get these games! There's a nice amount of variation in the level design for this as well, not to mention the bosses are fairly interesting. Once I get my hands on another DS, I'll be sure to snag an English copy at some point. It'll be a lot nicer knowing whether or not I just got a double-saber, double daggers, or some big fuckoff sword without looking up a translation guide!

I'm excited for this! After years of playing PSO on gamecube where the most common thing in chat was "no kb sry", I was looking forward to playing a PSO where everyone could type. Lack of chat in random is a big downer. How am I supposed to make PSO buddies? On the other hand, requiring me to track down PSO friends outside the game means that I don't have to wade through a sea of morons and cheaters.

I'm actually kinda curious about it, mainly because there was so much dialogue and so many dialogue trees, way more than I'd ever expect for such a game (luckily there's two speeds of fast-forward, and even a rewind button which all text-heavy games should get). Apparently there's some sort of friendship gauge with the NPC party members that goes up if you give the right answers to their questions or something? I always just hit the first option, maybe that's why the NPCs were little more than cannon fodder.

PSZ Site posted:HUnewm - A brand new class in Phantasy Star Zero! HUnewms are fighters who specialize in both a balance of evasion, melee fighting, and powerful techniques. Recommended for advanced players, HUnewms are difficult to play due to their initial low HP and defenses, but can become extremely effective in both solo and party play once leveled. This sounds a lot like the FOmar from Episode 2, except instead of techniques with a bit of melee, it's the other way around. I think this guy will be my Hunter, especially since his outfits vaguely resemble the HUmar outfits from PSO, as opposed to this 'JRPG Protagonist' sort of thing they're sporting now. Speaking of FOmars; PSZ Site posted:Just like in PSO, FOmars continue to rock the man-robe. To be fair, it's at least clear they're wearing pants now.

Bringing this thread back from mild death since we're getting closer to release (11/10/2009 is the shipping date so expect to see the game on wednesday at the earliest if you're really optimistic, the official website lists the 12th as the release date). I got a few questions as well for those who have played the japanese version: How varied are the maps in the game? When you go to an area does it choose from a selection of maps like PSO? or do you pick a quest and go through the same map over and over like PSU/P? As someone who played PSO/PSP mostly co-op, how is multiplayer both online and local? Is there massive slowdown when there's a ton of enemies like PSP? I did some reading and is the tower the offline only area? Because it sounded like it would be a blast in co-op. Lakbay fucked around with this message at Nov 08, 2009 around 12:13 |

Lakbay posted:I got a few questions as well for those who have played the japanese version: The maps are built out of blocks, with the entrance, mid-point and pre-boss areas being static and everything else in between being randomised. There's just the one map per stage, though, so no Forest 1/2/3 kinda thing if that's what you mean. I've mostly played online and experienced very little lag, even with my worthless connection. Occasionally there's a split-second stutter when new enemies spawn and that's about it. That's probably why I'd recommend PSZ over the current PSP, the slowdown kills it for me. Yeah, the tower is offline-only. I don't think you can go through the tower in offline co-op but I doubt you'll be able to find anyone willing to slog through it even if you can. Trust me, it's not nearly as fun as it might sound and is about twenty times longer than it needs to be.

Yes, it will work online and it's fun and you'll enjoy it. Nintendo Power reviewed PSZ and gave it an 8.0 - liked the graphics and music, thought the combat was more fun than PSO, said online play was second to none on DS, complained about the interface (despite not knowing some of the shortcuts) and the lack of story and generally thought it was too similar to PSO. Also, the North American PSZ strategy guide lists a bunch of bonus item codes, but some items from the Japanese games aren't listed so I'm guessing they'll be revealed on the website or something (or in a day when someone hacks them). The codes are different to the Japanese ones too so you can't just use the list that's already been dumped.

I own the Japanese version and it runs just fine from Australia on my crappy connection. Online play is designed to be region-free so I very much doubt you'll have any issues.

Good. The more like PSO this game is, the better. Story can take a backseat if the gameplay is solid. They just need to keep refining the PSO formula, not redoing it like they tried to do with things like Episode III (which would have been fine as a simple add-on expansion or a minigame) or PSU. Photon Arts were one of the few things I actually liked about PSU and I'm glad they're including those.

The next two days can't go by fast enough, for those of you that have it, how long are the areas in the game? In PSO I remember later areas taking a hefty chunk of time but being an absolute pleasure.

for you who just can't get your PSO fix fast enough, we have a whole group of goons who play PSO:Blue Burst on the PC still it's Episodes 1&2, and Episode 4, with a ton of new weapons and armor there's a thread in private servers and an IRC channel, I've got the hook up if you can't wait to start mopping up at Lv1

I'm getting this for sure, I got a character to level 100 with all the best ranger weapons in PSP with friends and enjoyed it alot despite the massive slowdown in combat. How long does it take to get to level 100? It took a bit but it was achievable in PSP unlike PSO where getting to 200 felt impossible for me due to the grind.

I only got to level 40 or so on the Japanese game before giving up so as not to burn out before the English release but it does seem a bit quicker than PSO and mags in particular level much quicker than they used to.

Anyone playing on a DSlite? I have nightmares of even 2D games like Lunar Knights, I can't imagine how frustrating it might be trying to hit diagonals on the DS' loving terrible crosspad. Does the game type actually work out, or am I going to split my DS in half because I can't shoot anything with my Ranger?

DSi for me. Never had a real problem with diagonals on my Lite, personally. In fact, this is the game I upgraded to the larger screen size for. (And because I'm too cheap to get a Zune

Also, personally I do like the clicky fat DS' D-pad quite a bit more than the lite's, but what surprises me even more is the fact that the thing is practically a launch unit and it still works. I treat all its dings and worn paint as badges of honor.

I think adding a psogoons irc channel link would be good so we can organize games and exchange friend codes. Or just add a friend code list to the OP since I doubt we'll have a huge number of FCs
