I'm like 5 episodes into the second season, is this going to turn to poo poo or is it pretty much just this level of crazy all the time? Because I'd be fine with the crazy option...

As dumb as the additional characters may be, MacLachlan was right. I can't imagine Dale Cooper in some sex scandal with a high school girl. It seemed like an odd "American Beauty-ish" tension every time the show tried to push for him and Audrey to get together.

Well.. I'm a few episodes past the murder reveal and WHAT THE gently caress? This is like Twin Peaks fan fiction written by an idiot who didn't get the series. Its all good though. It's bonus time in Twin Peaks for me. But I'm marking it right next to Die Hard 4 as "something that passes the time, but is totally not an official part of the story in my mind."

Just finished the series. It really did save itself in the last 3 episodes or so. Now onto the movie! (Dude, I love Twin Peaks.)

You guys should have just done what I did: Fast forward through Bobby/Nadine/James plots. I will say this though. Andy's response to Dick's "There are some people who believe that red is the ONLY kind of wine" line is priceless. (raises hand matter of factly) That's not true, Dick. There are also white and sparkling wines Seriously... who don't love Andy?

I don't know what it is about that show, but for me it just seems to plod along and never really become very interesting to me. Twin Peaks had me HOOKED by episode 1. Watching them side-by-side has really made LOST feel totally humdrum. Not "bad" by any means, but merely okay. I really don't understand what it is about that show that has captured the public's interest. In its defense though, I'm pretty hard to please with media, so it could just be my innate fun-killing dickishness. (I'm trying to like it. Really I am.) Edit: Hurley is cool though. aniero posted:I know I sound like an apologist because normally I would say that having to plod through 3 seasons to get to the good stuff is completely inexcusable. However, I think there's a lot in Seasons 1-3 that are really really good. especially in retrospect with the context of how the show advances. There's a lot of little stuff going on that isn't totally clear until much later. It's a fascinating way of writing, and their attention to detail is stunning. I'm on Season 3 now and hoping it gets better. You gave me just what I needed to read. I keep checking myself from yelling "Do you realize that while this unlikeable rear end in a top hat doctor, this irritating hobbit and this loving JCPenny-catalog-model redneck prattle on about "Others" that we could be watching one of the best dramas ever made!? BUTTON YOUR loving SHIRT, SAWYER!" I appreciate it though. The two are compared a lot. Probably because its rare for a major network shows to allow their creators as much freedom as LOST and TP.

Haha if you think that's TwinPeaksy, check out Deadly Premonition in its earlier form. Tewratomeh posted:Wow, I'd honestly never heard about Jennifer Lynch until now. It's pretty sad how hard she tried to follow in her dad's footsteps, only to fall flat on her face. Oh man, she hosed up BAD. Real bad. When this thing was coming out, it was hyped for months as "the incredible ultimate product from David Lynch's daughter" and "its so controversial and mysterious! If you thought David was weird, who KNOWS what his daughter will create?!" Then when it came out it was so laughably bad that it basically caused her to completely vanish from the movie scene for YEARS. Imagine if Jennifer Lynch had been cast as the lead in her high school play, and her dad flew in from Europe to see her, but when the male lead lifted her up mid-song, she accidentally exploded in diarrhea all down her legs... That still would not have been as publicly embarrassing to the Lynch name as this trainwreck. Watch it with your friends. Buy the DVD. Lend the DVD out. edit: Also, there's a reason why "the guy who played the Warlock" doesn't get that many headlining roles. This film is that reason.

Dissapointed Owl posted:Aha, I disagree. I saw it when I was 13 or something and I loved it. It was strange and almost incomprehensible but not completely so. (Nah, I don't think we need to spoiler that. It's like not knowing Jack Bauer only has 24 hours to save something) I just think the actual killer reveal was really interesting in the show. To have all that suspense taken from me before I even started it would have killed my interest early.

Tewratomeh posted:I also remember it being a lot darker than what I'm seeing in the show, but that was probably because Lynch didn't have the network ratings board to hold him back. One of the things that I find most appealing about Twin Peaks is that it's so restrained. There are still moments that are a little bit unnerving, but the rest of the time it's just a Goofy Murder Mystery Show, with just a dash of Andy Griffith. If they would've kept that tone for the movie it probably would've had a better reception. I totally agree with this. This show is incredible precisely because people are issuing checks and balances against Lynch. Lets face it, David Lynch's work is often pretty intentionally "weird for the sake of being weird." Frost does a nice job of evening that out and steering Lynch's usual over-the-top insanity into something that regular-to-higher-tolerance viewers alike can appreciate. Obviously, most of this goes to waste after Lynch leaves and people can't duplicate his particular brand of weird without him, but its still a very important aspect of the first season. Dissapointed Owl posted:I don't like it when Lynch holds back. I knew it! Your earlier defense of watching FWWM first made that clear!

Tewratomeh posted:drat... not looking forward to the Second Season now, but I'm going to watch it anyways. When did Lynch leave the series? After Laura's killer is revealed? The murder wraps up splendedly. The "bad part" of season 2 is actually probably only about 5 or 6 episodes. Then it gets back on track with a new "main plot." It's totally still worth seeing. Just be prepared for extreme hokeyness from some of the townspeople.

The yelling is bad, but for the real war crime, I point you to Cole's retarded "code." ![]() I've read defenses of this being Lynch trolling people for thinking he puts things in just to be obtuse. I still think its dumb. quote:But the main Windom Earle plot is interesting enough to keep me going... I'm just wondering how the finale is going to play out. I've heard that it's pretty out there, and a major downer. Honestly, it's not THAT out there. Don't get me wrong, its crazy and I love it. But its not a totally unpredictable plot development. I didn't guess it, but it was a heavy suspicion. On an unrelated note, everybody scream-dance!

Kate was supposed to win Miss Twin Peaks, but due to her actress being involved in a drunk driving incident, the producers fired her and removed this plot development from the show.

Dr. Glasscock posted:My mom loved the poo poo out of this show when I was a kid. Giving it a try myself right now. Everyone is saying how awesome the first season is. I'm watching the first episode and am already turned off. I know it has to establish the characters and the "everyone knows everyone" small town thing, but man half of the episode is people crying like crazy, it's really depressing. Also the pacing is kinda slow since it's an older show. Kinda just gives me a meh first impression. I assume if I stick with it for a couple of episodes I'll be hooked eh? I was kinda hooked by episode 1. What did you think of Agent Cooper and the police department? They're really the important characters. If you don't like them, tap out now. Oh, and ep 1 is really dark. They are just trying to establish that the town beauty queen turning up dead pretty much hosed up everybody's day in Twin Peaks. The show gets much more whimsical after this episode. (Then it will suddenly dip into utter darkness all the drat time.)

Dr. Glasscock posted:Haven't formed a strong opinion either way yet (though the officer who was taking pictures and started to cry was pretty funny, "seriously, EVERY TIME??!"). Like you guys said, it really wants you to understand how serious the crime was. So that combined with slow 90s-show pacing made for many minutes of crying. I'll give it some more time, lots of people [b]really[b/] like it, I'm sure I will too! Andy is the best. I hope you end up liking it. Twin Peaks is easily my favorite dramatic show ever. That's not even 90s nostalgia or anything talking, I just watched the series about 3 months ago. I usually don't even REALLY like David Lynch--he always seems so smug with his own work and opinions. Twin Peaks was just such a perfect mix of Lynch's trademark craziness and the other creators clearly forcing him to reign it in to make it more palatable to a mainstream audience. What it results in is probably the most off-kilter funny, then frightening, then sweet, then savage show ever made. It's deeply flawed at times (these times usually include a side character with an eye-patch) and the second season is nowhere near the quality of the first, but overall the series is unlike any other show. (With the possible exception of that new awful-looking Happy Town show, which appears to be a direct rip-off.) Dr. Glasscock posted:EDIT: Also drat, why does CBS only have 3 episodes AND not put the episode or season number on them? Kind of an oversight there. Go find a less legal streaming site or use wikipedia's episode listing.
