To stay updated on this project you can get notifications on facebook at http://www.facebook.com/dappergentlemen Here are all the frames in order so you know where the story is. I won't be able to update this immediately after new stuff is made, so make sure to check the last page or so of the thread as well. http://dappergentlemen.com/fathersterling/ ![]() ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Don't worry if you are a TERRIBLE artist. That's not what it's about. You can draw stick figures, it really doesnt matter. It's really just all about having fun and contributing. I have run a few goon art projects in the past: Goon city: http://www.gooncity.com (http://forums.somethingawful.com/sh...hreadid=2929126) SPACE, goon art book: http://ryanallen.com/2009/06/new-ar...t-off-to-print/ PARANORMAL, goon art book: http://ryanallen.com/2009/10/parano...rt-book-finito/ 6 months ago myself and another goon got together and started working on some ideas on how to create a large goon art project for the iphone. We had a few different ideas we came up with, but the one we both really liked was the one I am now starting here. This project is going to be a large collaborative comic book for the iPhone. ![]() Okay cool, a large collaborative iPhone comic book. So how does this work? I have created the first 5 frames already. It sets up the story, and the rest will be created by you, the internet using SA members. (I'm only taking work done on SA, so don't submit stuff on facebook or the website.) Once the app reaches around 10mb (the largest file you can download from the app store without being forced to use wi-fi) it will be submitted to apple for approval, and hopefully pushed out for everyone to download. For Free. And no, we will not be putting ads into this app. The point of this project is for fun, we aren't making any money with it and no one is going to get paid. The project will keep on running and new issues will be sent out to apple once they hit 10mb. Sounds fun, how do I contribute? This is simple. You create a frame for the comic book (tall or wide) and submit it on the forum. I will be taking frames in the order they were submitted, so whoever posts first gets their piece into the app (probably). If you have a good idea you can just submit a quick sketch to keep the story moving along and get your piece in as a place holder. You can then spend all the time you need making your frame look its best. I plan on running this similar to how goon city was run. I will keep the project up and running for a few months (as long as their is interest really), so don't worry if you don't have any ideas right away. You will have a lot of time to work on stuff. Alright so how do you want my files? 640 x 960 @163 DPI (ppi) - RGB color - this is twice the size of the iphone screen so people can zoom in on stuff and have it still be clear. You can download this template and build your frames inside of it. The .zip file below has .tif .bmp and .png files, it also has the main character in vector format that I drew, the fonts you should use and some vector speech bubbles. http://www.dappergentlemen.com/app_template_files.zip You can do this in mspaint, pencil, watercolor, vector work, magic marker, or whatever medium you want. A few of my first frames are ink and watercolor and another is built in illustrator. Just get your final image into the correct template size and submit it as a png, tif or bmp. (dont worry about file sizes I will convert and compress everything for the final app. I'm asking for .png .bmp or .tif because the quality will be higher. I don't want you submitting an ugly artifact riddled jpg.) In the template is the font you will use for any text. Please keep this consistent. The font is called Laffayette Comic Pro (http://www.dafont.com/font-comment....yette_comic_pro) and keep it at 10pt. The title font for Father Sterling is Romance Fatal Serif (http://www.dafont.com/romance-fatal-serif.font) Speech should be in speech bubbles, narration should be in a box with rounded corners. Keep this consistent throughout the entire app. If you change this I'll probably complain and bitch at you, and if I can't easily change it I'll just throw it out and not include it. If your submission is lovely low quality I'm not going to put it in the app either. If you aren't sure if you are doing things right just ask. If this is as popular as goon city I will be putting hundreds more hours into building and putting it all together, and I don't really want to spend an hour fixing your fonts and other stuff you did wrong. What restrictions are there? Remember that Apple needs to approve the app, so please be careful with what you do. Try not to put offensive stuff in. If you want to use words like gently caress, poo poo, cock etc, remember that Apple might reject the app because of it, and we might have to edit poo poo down to appease them. I'm not saying don't use 'bad' words, just be mindful that Apple might take issue. Please don't put any racist stuff in your piece(s). I figure the app is going to need to be +17 because of violence, but please don't do any racist stuff. Don't have the main character go off to kill all the jews and surprise sex their corpses for example. It won't be easy to edit stuff if Apple demands that 2/3's of the apps story needs to be deleted because of an arc created by your piece. Apple is run by a bunch of prudes, so giant cocks and sexual themes will probably get the app a ban as well. Try and put some effort into your work I realize that there will probably be a bunch of 30 second mspaint pieces, and that is fine really. Just be mindful that if you submit stupid poo poo it will effect how the story runs for people down the line. Your art doesn't need to be the best, so don't worry if you don't know what you're doing. Just make sure you are at least trying. Again, no one is getting paid, but you can get publicity! This app (and any future father sterling releases) are going out for free. We are not putting ads into the app and no one is getting paid. We spent several months building the app because it is going to be a fun project, and not as a way to make money. We did however build in a way for you to get publicity for the work that you do. When you submit your piece, submit along with it any information you want made public. Each frame has an info panel, so people can get your name, email address, facebook page, twitter page or website from it. If you don't want any of this info to show up don't submit any of it and I'll just put your forum name in the panel for credit. If you have any questions just ask I think that this is going to be a lot of fun. Don't hesitate if you have any questions, I'll make sure to help answer any questions anyone has. Below are the first 5 frames I made to get the story started. It's now up to all of you to continue it all. Here are the first 5 frames. 1 (ink and watercolor on paper) ![]() 2 (ink and watercolor on paper) ![]() 3 (ink and watercolor on paper) ![]() 4 (ink and watercolor on paper) ![]() 5 (vector art in illustrator)

What if someone's been working on a frame for a long time and that person gets hosed over because someone did a quick frame that creates a context where the frame no longer makes any sense? I know the final count is gonna come to 10 MB, but about how many images/frames does that equal? e: ALSO - Is there a limit to the number of pages per artist? Looking at the interface mechanics, Some nice ideas but a few issues that make it feel a bit unintuitive. A better idea for the further information section of the image is to have a slider from the bottom that you grab the handle of and drag upwards. Think of how android's notification area works. The thumbnails, I can see the intention, but maybe if you drag the image off the side of the screen, the next page comes on. Again like HTC's ui for the album app on android. edit: I am a retard, I see that you already do this, maybe make the thumbnail view fullscreen after a double tap. Also if you want some help with the android version of the phone, give me a shout, I'm learning the SDK currently (And have one to try the software out on) and I am eager to learn more about the SDK.

The app works like the picture viewer where you just swipe left or right to go to the next / previous image. The thumbnail is there in case you want to go through them all fast, like if you want to go to page 50 from 1 quickly.

Shouldn't the app itself be a one time mechanism to access new issues? So like you submit an app that comes with the first edition but that same app can then receive subsequent edition pushes. So when you load the app it's basically like a comic viewer and shows all the comic editions you currently have on your system (just the one by default), you click on that and then it takes you to the actual comic. Seems like you'd have to deal with more grief doing it the single edition per app approach. Otherwise, looks awesome!

cowofwar posted:Shouldn't the app itself be a one time mechanism to access new issues? Yeah we were actually working on this. The problem with this however is that all the data has to be hosted and sent out by our own servers. Apple won't handle the bandwidth for 'in app purchases', which is how it would be run. If the app is free and 100,000 people are updating a 10mb app, I'm all of a sudden having to deal with a large amazon S3 bill

So, I know you are requesting consistent font use (which is fine), but are the vector narration/speech bubbles required? Or can they be any medium, as long as the follow the rounded for narration, bubbles for speech? I prefer to use paper and ink, and I noticed your watercolor used the vector speech bubbles, so I just wanted to clarify about that. I need to go get some non-photo pencils tomorrow! Edit: Oh, and I know you say 'frame', but can our one image be broken up any? More like a page, or part of a page? I'm just thinking at maximum two or three larger frames within the one image we submit. More to show action, I guess. If not, that's fine. No the speech bubbles can look different, I just supplied the ones in that template in case you didn't want to make your own. You can be creative and do whatever you want in each frame, it doesn't have to just be 1 image in there. HardDisk posted:Is there a limit for how many frames a single user can submit?
