Like many states, Mississippi has adopted an "Abstinence Only" form of sex education. However, being Mississippi, they decided to hold a rally to actually celebrate the fact that they are a backwards state to the point where Texas is looking advanced and liberal by comparison. The huffingtom post posted:
It amazes me that people are still supporting Abstinence Only "education" when it has so clearly failed. Mississippi has the highest teen pregnancy rate of any state, and the highest rate of out-of-wedlock births. If abstinence only education worked, this would not be the case. The thing that really bugged me, however, is the fact that most of the presenters at the conference were Christian ministers who didn't so much talk about sexuality then about the fact that Jesus hates screwing before marriage. And this rally was paid for by government funds. Clearly this is a violation of the first amendment. Really, isn't getting a bunch of young teenage girls dressed in cheerleader outfits and pointing to their crotches in front of a bunch of young teenage boys really going to help the Abstinence Only cause? I'm glad I teach in California, where we don't have this "no-no square" nonsense in our curriculum. We can talk about condoms and stuff like that.

It's like anything you tell people they can't have, like candy and alcohol. Emphasis is put on it as being "bad", it's hidden or restricted, and therefore becomes something people overindulge in as opposed to doing/using responsibly. And then bad consequences happen and candy/alcohol/sex is still somehow the bad thing.

Unfortunately the whole "abstinence only" policy goes far past the school in most Southern states. Most of the rural communities treat teenage pregnancy as something that only happens to whores, white trash, blacks, and non-Christians. Thus in the minds of many people who determine policy, it is okay to teach only abstinence because the good Christian folk will benefit while the godless get whats coming to them. I wish I was joking, but this was the core of the reasoning given for why this policy existed at my my high school in Alabama. It isn't a policy problem really, it's a cultural problem that seeps into political policy.

Hey now, no need for Texas hate. I had sex-ed in 5th grade ('96) and while it was kind of simplified and toned down for a 5th grade audience they still explained the details and talked about birth control. Had it again in 10th grade ('02) and they went much more in depth about birth control, where to get it, how to use it, how to avoid getting taken advantage of, etc. Of course they stated at the beginning that "abstinence is the only way to 100% avoid pregnancy and STDs, but you little shits are hornier than jackrabbits and are going to gently caress no matter what so here's how to be safe." Well... in more polite language at least. This "No-No Square" crap is absolutely ridiculous. It baffles me every time I hear of school districts starting up new -- or continuing to use -- abstinence-only programs which have been proven time and again to be completely ineffective at deterring pregnancy and STD rates. Why do people so vehemently deny human nature and the fact that people -- yes, even your precious little angel -- love to gently caress? I was pretty lucky in that I went to a pretty nice high school. My four years there, with a steady student population of around 3000, I only recall two girls ever being pregnant (though I have no doubt there were some hush-hush abortions). It blew my mind when I went to a different high school in the same city to take the ACT and saw that they had a day-care center. A loving day-care center... in a high school!?

I love it that the word "education" is used so poorly that it's lost all meaning. I can't wait for someone to sue abstinence-only states for disallowing the right to a proper sexual education. Freedom of Education didn't just overturn desegregation, but it means that public schools are forbidden from teachings that endorse a particular religious belief. Abstinence is part of a religious belief.
