As many other New Yorkers are undoubtedly doing tonight, I'm looking at the mayoral candidates' websites for the first time. Will I vote for 17th richest man in the world, power-hungry, Constitution-scoffing, able administrator, rat-faced Mayor Mike? Or that other guy? Why isn't there a candidate who really represents my interests? But oh, there is. His name is Jimmy MCMillan (sic). And he's here to tell you that the rent is too drat high. He screams for a photoshopping, but I lack the skills. Please feel free to experiment with him. His website is really a thing of beauty. Make sure you have the volume on, and don't forget to check out his treatise on the word 'drat.' http://rentistoodamnhigh.org/id44.html quote:Is the King James Bible the true Word of God? I've added a fun rant he has about slavery (I think?) quote:On A Personnel Note ...NEGOR? And of course, he's on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3AgIorLZnbA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZL0-22Z4Sfg salamanderbaby fucked around with this message at Nov 03, 2009 around 03:19 |

I agree with him but if he were elected Mayor what could he possibly do about the high cost of rent?

This has to be the catchiest mayoral candidacy website I've ever had the pleasure of listening to.

I've seen flyers for this guy. He's out of his mind. But then, he's running for mayor of New York, so he'd pretty much have to be. I'll be voting for Bill Thompson with a clean conscience.

He's got a killer 'tasche I spose. A bit 'Hulk Hogan' though. aldo there should be a video of a close up of his face, like the photo, screaming "MY RENT IS TO DAAAAAAMN HIGH!" maybe with some kind of zoom in.

Yeah but Hogan's view on the rent is unknown. This guy is clearly a man of interest on the subject.

I'd vote for this man if I was living in NY. There are so many other cities where, while expensive, you don't have to choose between food and rent, and I can't help but believe NYC gets by on exploiting a constant influx of naive young people who are *absolutely* sure they'll "make it."

Can you guys living in NY post your rent? I live in Tokyo and wonder how the two compare. For reference, I pay 162,000 yen (like $1800usd) per month for 45m2/1BR, which as far as I know is pretty average for downtown Tokyo. edit: the price is average, but not the amount of space I have to myself zmcnulty fucked around with this message at Nov 03, 2009 around 01:18 |

There is everything from 5th floor walkups or worse to park view full service buildings along with numerous other factors that effect total cost of living, even with the same amount of square footage.

No doubt, but clearly there must be some basis for comparison because this guy feels rents are too high. Too high compared to what? Like the average New York resident has to pay 60% of their income into rent, or what?

Tokyo is probably one of a half dozen or so cities on the planet that can compare to New York's hosed up real estate. I'm in the middle of moving from a $1400/900sqft 1BR in south Brooklyn to a $1700/700sqft 2BR in Park Slope, one of the trendier nice parts of Brooklyn. I know people that live in $2500/500sqft places in the East village/SoHo, which is probably comparable in terms of space and location to your place. It's worth noting that even the really expensive parts of the city, apartments usually lack things like elevators, central air, a dishwasher, and washer/dryer, and it's not unheard of to see listings for $3000+ a month to get a big apartment in a nice building, in a good part of town. Because of the money in this town the sky really is the limit if you want to go crazy: http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/nfb/1448781546.html ANAmal.net fucked around with this message at Nov 03, 2009 around 01:57 |

My neighborhood has had to fight several times to keep "affordable" housing out (i.e. subsidized). Even in my comparably reasonably priced city some people actually tried to get one of our private courtyards annexed for public use so development costs would be cheaper for new developments.
